These are THE BEST Ranged and Casters in PvP in World of Warcraft - Cataclysm expansion. My experience comes of playing Cataclysm PvP for almost a decade on private servers so if you played it 15 years ago on retail - it may be different. In any case, I would love to hear your opinion on the classes and how they do in PvP, feel free to comment!

As someone who has never played Cata but is thinking about getting into it, this information has helped me a lot, because I enjoy pvp in other (previous) expansions. BM is definitely a decent choice, I wouldn't call it OP though, MM still performs better most of the time

Trash if facing any healer that can dispel Immolate, you will be limited on how far you can go with destro, I would play it with a sub rogue in 2s ideally, also feral in 3s, and add an OP healer like holy pal or r sham

bit late, but im kind of new to ranged/casters I avoided wotlk warlock due to pet management. Is it still needed to have really good pet management with the ability to re-summon more? I'm fine with silence/dispells just sucked at moving them around.

If you wanna be the best -yes, they even added “pet move to” command now, but you can be a really good warlock even if your pet management isn’t that good, I wouldn’t stress about it too much

frost mages were insane in cata. and honestly blood dks were BUSTED. unkillable. I carried arenas for gold back then with a blood dk and reforging my gear to stack mastery. oh the good ole days...

Yep, Blood DKs used to be crazy good, not so much anymore though, still pretty good against melees, but easily kitted and counter by any ranged dps

Shadow was the only thing I didn't enjoy in Cata PvP. Now, don't get me wrong, they can be good, but it depends on the context. Like Ele they are not usually the best 1v1 or in 2s and it tends to be melee that you have problems with who also very much like to sit on you. Shadow actually has it worse against melee since your disarm is on a 2 MIN CD (1.5 min with glyph) compared to the more useful AoE knockback on a much shorter CD. The only melee that can't avoid your Psychic Scream and make it useless are Ret Paladins and Ferals, so your go to tool isn't as useful. If you are in 3s or if you have someone looking after you and peeling for you then it is good. All I know is if it's myself just signing up for a random bg there are many situations where I just can't do anything to beat the melee class... and then keeping in mind Rogue and Feral is especially strong and both are great at 1v1 and picking targets off. Ferals are nasty and can instant cyclone, heal themselves, and go back into stealth and they can just do that over and over until you are dead. Having Dispersion delays the process slightly. Mind Spike spam actually hits good and has situational use so you can actually burst something if you can free cast. Leap of Faith is a lot of fun and it feels good to save someone's life with it. Pro tip: drag your melee on top of you so they will fight the melee sitting on you haha. Offhealing is nice, but I remember not having the mana to do it that much. I just think Cata Shadow feels a touch squishier than Wrath Shadow but it's also before tools they get in MoP to deal with melee and being focused like Spectral Guise, Void Tendrils, and Fade reducing damage taken with a glyph. Let alone Angelic Feather in MoP gave them honest to god mobility. I don't want to be a downer, but you deserver to hear my experience with it. I really feel like if they dropped Psychic Horror WAY down, even if it required the glyph as well, and buffed Imp Psychic Scream (only 4 sec CD reduction for two points) that would have gone a long way. The talent Paralysis that stuns the target on a Mind Blast crit is unreliable. I really feel like that could have been worked into the effect of Mind Melt. Also, outside of the Psychic Horror Glyph and a reduction in the CD of Dispersion there aren't really a lot of PvP focused glyphs. The only other one is an armor buff to Inner Fire. Most melee are mobile enough Fade breaking movement impairing effects isn't as useful. They could have consolidated some of the PvP talents (or reduced the required amount of points, or made certain spells like Silence and Psychic Horror baseline) as there are other talents that would be nice to pick up, whether for better mana, something related to buffing shields, flash heal, renew, taking less spell damage, etc. that you WANT to take but just don't have the points. A few simple changes would go a long way IMO.

BM hunter would probably be right behind these specs listed here, it is a decent spec, but nowhere near marksmanship, you can totally play BM to very high ratings, beastcleave is a comp of the past, Aimed Shot is one of the top abilities

If I remember this comp was nearly impossible to fight out in the open if they knew how to keep dots up. Most lower end games against the comp was trash because most aff locks and boom ya were terrible at mananging dots while also cc’ing but if done well it was ridiculous..

Not rly, hunter only has great burst and CC but lacks sustained dmg and pressure, and is also rly easy to line of sight so I wouldn’t recommend playing it with a healer

5:30 the king of low level bgs isn't MM but BM because it's Kill Command that oneshots everyone. And I've never ever heard of hunters being desirable in rbg groups for anything else than defending a base. It's sustained dmg sucks (worst class to ever try solo a healer) and can hit only single target, so it doesn't really have the toolkit to even approach top of dmg bracket in a good group. 7:10 Bear without talents in feral tree isn't nearly as good. In most situations you would want to pick moonkin form's 15% reduction over it. Half of melees are half magic damage. Rogue and warrior reduce your armor, so that leaves feral. And even if it's def is decently bigger - it's still waste of 2 gcds for switching between forms. Mage is for sure better parter for owls than ret. If an opener on a healer of freeze + frostfire orb + Ring around to catch the dps + beam + starfall, treants and full dots + refreeze while still in silence + deep freeze + full counterspell after getting out of the beam doesn't force his cooldowns - you're doing it wrong. 10:40 Warlock has portal, which is op on 1/3 of the arena maps. Spriest has worst mobility. And drain life on low hp gets a boost making it look like MoP warrior's second wind, so I wouldn't call it that small. Overall I'd put spriest over ele sham. Dispersion top tier def, dispell prevention, grip, mass dispell bringing sort of endless trinket for teammates, kill shot alike spell, can switch between dot and direct dmg burst, offheals (or more like offabsorbs) without casting like ele or cancelling a form like balance. In case you ever felt like you're sleeping on destro warlock in cata - watch Phoenexis 1. You might get really surprised.

thanks for the tip with Phoenexis' video, really good montage, but playing against a disc priest that prioritizes hardcasting Flash Heal over dispeling Immolate or winning against MM+Sub which should literally one-shot you, those kind of arenas are more of an exception where the enemy is clueless...you could make an argument with sp over ele, but sp still has to jump out of Shadow Form to cast heals, which is an extra GCD, ele has far better mobility and actually has single and AoE snares and roots as well, super simple rotation, but then there are the arguments for sp that you mentioned...I've never seen BM outperform MM in BGs, it's usually MM that kills people, it can also CC healers, it's definitely not of the best best in BGs, but it's still one of the better picks

@@MEYTRIX When you're on low hp it won't do you much good to dispell immolate that prevents using conflagrate if you're in execute range for double shadowburn. Edit: And now that I looked at it again - Immolate was on priest who was almost full hp, the mage that died had no dots on him. So dispelling here would be completely pointless. Haven't seen the thug game from start so can't tell. But unlike on some private servers, resilience on retail means something. If you go shadowfury+coil+NS Hex+repeated seduction on hunter and interrupt his aimed cast with pushback - then it's more like rogue alone has to do that oneshot on you. My BM point referred to low level rbgs, since that's what you also mentioned in the video. 7/10 killing blows a hunter will perform on you on low level bg will come from kill command, which says a lot considering it's a class with execute spell. For 85 lvl bgs I would take MM over BM for bgs because of how easy pets are to nuke. I'm just saying that hunter overall is inferior in bgs to basically every other ranged class. Even ignoring the damage, you will most likely have boomy/sp/Alock/fire mage spamming dots, frost dk with howling blast, warrior with bladestorm, ele with chain. Hunter's cc becomes extremely hit or miss if enemies get even a bit stacked.

Anyone know how impactful pve gear is in pvp for Cata? In Wotlk, pve gear is important for melee, less so for casters and healers. Wondering if it's similar or different in Cata?

Pretty similar, not so much on the first pvp season - vicious, but on Ruthless you get legendary weapon for casters and some OP trinkets too, and on Cataclysmic legendary daggers and some more OP trinkets

Yep, you can go all just PvP pieces, there’s only very few PvE parts you could consider as a hunter but none of them make a huge difference anyway

I hated cata in the original, it screws with PvE play horribly and makes all my favorite classes and specs junk to play. They screw with the metas at start of mages, warlocks, hunters and elemental shamans.

@@MEYTRIX no I don't feel any different, really. I played thru it hoping it would improve, and it didn't from start to finish. The nerfs never got better in the expansion. It was also the beginning of the end for theory crafting of characters, which culminated in the cookie cutter specs across the board in the later expansions.

Cata pvp is WAY less bursty than WotLK. You will not see healers not being able to outheal 1 single warrior or spellcleaves killing people in 2-3 seconds like you do in WotLK.

Sadly they are not that great in PvP this xpac and I got ate alive by melee. the only specs that can't just avoid Psychic Scream are Ret and Feral, but both of those should beat you anyway. Fade removing movement imparing effects doesn't matter if you have no mobility. Paralysis stun on Mind Blast proc is unreliable. Imp Psychic Scream only reduces the CD by 4 sec for 2 points. Silence is legit, but we do ok against a lot of casters if we can abuse los. Our problem is with melee. Psychic Horror, our single target disarm, is on a laughable 2 min CD and the glyph only reduces that by 30 sec. There are less actual PvP useful glyphs than there are slots, while on the other hand there are many more useful talents you want to take than you have points to spend which could help your mana and buff your shields and healing spells. There is even a percentage reduction in spell damage taken that would be nice to pick up. If they cared an easy fix would be reduce CD of Psychic Horror considerably and add some glyphs that are only useful for PvP; anything that would help with survivability against melee would be great. But then you'd still have Ferals this xpac who can use instant cyclones, heal themselves, and restealth over and over so the busted things would still negate it unless addressed.

Since cata wow is no longer wow) hunter's ntelligence dropped to an animal level because he started to use focus just as his pet, the playstyle changed into brain dead shooting on the move) all classes became so much more similar to eachother, paladins get kick, mages get bloodlust, rogues get self heal, etc etc.
