I was on the crew that built the Salt Creek Trail in 1976. We lived in a trailer where the parking lot is now. Due to it being a sensitive area no vehicle's or power equipment was allowed so everything was transported on the site by hand and then by wheel barrel on the completed sections.

I would add two to your great list: Artists' Palette - many different stops along the drive where you can hike as far as your stamina takes you. Some hills and the farther out you walk, the fewer folks. It was extremely cold & windy when we were there so we just did a few quick under 1 mi hikes. Secondly, the hike to the bottom of Ubehebe is stunning, and not quite as cold if you're there on a cold, windy day. Lots of hikes in the backcountry too if your vehicle is VERY well equipped for making it on the Jeep trails.
