I live in Imola, and the track's reputation is stuff of legends for us. My grandpa told me that once, during a sidecar race, a pilot had an accident at the Acque Minerali corner (you can see it in the map) and his leg came off triggering panic among the spectators. Thank God it was the guy's wooden leg.

Yeah, however, you can brake while cornering (and in fact, you need to, to get decent lap times around a track). It's called trail braking, you basically apply less brake, since some of your tyres grip is going to be used for cornering. It's quite a difficult skill to master.

Before the Senna accident and after, you still had a double chicane before the main straight. When the F1 left Imola they re-vamped the track and made it one straight from the last corner till variante Tamburello
@vogliounacocacola3 жыл бұрын
In 94 the Tamburello was not a chicane but rather a full-steam-ahead left bend. Same for the Villeneuve, it was basically flatout up to the Tosa. However, they were using the Variante Bassa, on the straight close to where the pit entry is. The names made sense, as you had the Variante Alta (high variant) and Variante Bassa (low variant) because one is on top of the hill, before the two Rivazzas, and the other is down below.

Well after Rivazza there was the Variante Bassa chicane where the current pit lane is so no, it wasn't flat out from Rivazza to Tosa. That would've been scary though
@milito225104 жыл бұрын
The very first layout for the track (I mean in the '60s-'70s) was actually flat out from Rivazza to Tosa. Later on they added a double chicane (Variante Bassa) and a single one uphill (Variante Alta) to slow the cars down. There was also a chicane near the Acque Minerali corner, but it was exclusively for motorbikes and was deleted soon. After the 1994 GP they added the two new chicanes (Tamburello and Villeneuve), while the two chicanes before the finish became a single left-right one (the Variante Bassa you mentioned). Now, after the renovation has been completed, there is no more Variante Bassa. In case you're wondering how I know, I actually live in Imola. Not joking.
@simoneburini40364 жыл бұрын
@@milito22510 the chicane at Acque Minerali was also for cars. It was there because of the lack of runoff at the bottom of that section. After 1994, the runoff area was widened and the chicane was removed. I think that the layout that we have today (the one without Variante Bassa) is better than the 1981-1994 one. The chicane for motorcycles that you talk about was actually a left-right one placed shortly after Variante Alta.
