Fun fact: A-4 was neither faster nore more maneuverable- even with the souped up Mongoose and Super fox variants (A-4M and A-4F). It did a phenomenal 720 degree roll rate, but F-14A could out-turn it all day. F-14 on paper was superior in every way except training made a difference where a skilled instructor could drive the fight very slow in an A-4 and run circles around a student in an F-14.

If you were to do a movie of the US fighting some small African tribe nobody would watch since a single JDAM would end the fight. But these movies aren't going for accuracy, they are going for some epic dogfighting with a great story behind it.

Up until the scene with Val Kilmer, it just seemed like the director, Joseph Kosinski, was just trying to be like the late Tony Scott and all but do a shot-for-shot remake of the first one. But after the Iceman scene, he finally found his own voice and “Maverick” got way better.

I took care of an 80+ yr old A-4 Skyhawk pilot last week. He loved this scene but said that it wasn’t very realistic. While an F-14 may be faster with full afterburner the A-4 would most certainly be much more maneuverable. He said that the Skyhawk was known to “turn on a dime” while the Tomcat ROT was far less impressive.

Especially the aggressor Skyhawks they used at TopGun. They’re stripped down and have an engine with 2,000 pounds more thrust than than the standard Fleet models. They were nicknamed “Mongoose” for a reason. Those planes embarrassed plenty of Tomcat pilots

It depends on which variant. If you're talking about the standard E variant, in a rate fight, no way. In a one circle fight, maybe. 'More maneuverable' is the kind of statement that requires context. Some jets are more maneuverable at slower speeds, others at high speeds. The A-4 had a great thrust to weight ratio, and was able to recoup energy faster than the Tomcat, but the Tomcat could tighten turns better than an A-4 in a rolling scissor fight. With respect, I think your elderly friend might have a bit of bias when it comes to his beloved Skyhawk. However, if it was the Mongoose variant as mentioned above, he's quite likely correct.

The TF30 was a bomber engine that was crammed into a wide-bodied heavy fleet defense fighter-interceptor, it didn't like throttle inputs, it didn't like throttle inputs at all. . . Meanwhile back in the day the A-4 was still able to go head to head with the F-14 at Miramar and Fallon, also the T-38 was used from time to time as well. A-6's, and F-16's also joined in the cat caroling. The F-14's design led to good maneuverability in a fight, but the TF30 hampered the 'cat to a degree and the aggressor squadron pilots were topshelf aces that knew how to get in behind a 'cat and nail it, their F-8 and F-4 experiences helped a lot in this regard. On paper even with the bratty TF30's the Tomcat was superior in everyway, on paper. . .

Not true. A lot of fighter jets actually do have rear mounted mirrors inside the canopy. But just like driving a car, sometimes you do wanna have a good view behinde you, cause a mirror only can show you so much. That said, I’m pretty sure the aggressor Skyhawks they used at Top Gun were stripped down and had more powerful engines than their frontline fleet counterparts. The reason the skyhawk was initially chosen as an aggressor in Vietnam was because it had similar flight characteristics to the Mig-17, being subsonic
