I already knew all these except for the double outliner (I've seen it but never got the use for it before and now i will save my life!) and the 2d camera that is going to help me while editing the scene from the render cam.. and even if it was just 2 it made the video definitely worth watching so thank you and please make more of these tips videos!

for the soft selection, i combine a plane(with some subdiv) onto the mesh i wanna deform then warp the curve accordingly after that, it gets useful when you need specific points to scale or move things but you dont wanna bend it too much

Ah thats a really cool way of doing it. Thanks for sharing :)

I've combined the double outliner and pure ref while I'm working on props. Pop the second outliner, put pure ref over it, and there is no way that I'd accidentally click it while working. Thank you gents!

Really useful video. I never knew about the double outliner, about to rig a sniper rifle with all its internal components so should come in handy then. Thanks. Also the soft fall off I tend to find useful for curving a cycliner inwards to form a tyre and it maintains the extrusions on the plane

I wish there was a way to "mask" soft selection fall offs in Maya.. i guess similar to the linear fall off and radial fall off in modo. We have deformers but it would be nice to have a mask on soft selection.
@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely! That sounds really handy. You can mask all deformers in Maya though :)

What are you thoughts on Modo vs Maya? I see you guys use both so wondering how you would compare the two in terms of strengths and weaknesses?
@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
One of the big differences is that Maya is used a lot in production, while MODO really isnt. Maya is a full 3D software, meaning you can do everything in it, while MODO is far far more limited. MODO generally has a stronger modelling toolset than Maya, and it's significantly easier to learn compared to Maya. The render engine in MODO is also super easy to use, as the preview renderer is fantastic! I mostly use Maya today, as I have to due to my job, but MODO is also a fantastic tool. It all depends really what you want to do. /Henning

About outliner, you can have multiple completely independent outliners, just in one of your window to panels->panel->outliner then Panels ->Tear off copy There was a bug in maya 2017 or first 2018 that everytime you opened outliner in floating window it opened as new instance but they finally fixed it :) and about 2dzoom it is not tylda key but back slash key :) www.google.pl/search?q=tylda+key&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiWndbtqvLZAhWDbZoKHfBECyYQ_AUICigB&biw=1463&bih=736 www.google.pl/search?biw=1463&bih=736&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=-ICsWrnKHcWn6AS25oygCA&q=back+slash+key&oq=back+slash+key&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i7i30k1j0i8i30k1j0i10i24k1l4.3126.3912.0.4624.4.4.0.0.0.0.68.256.4.4.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..0.4.254...0i13k1j0i8i13i30k1.0.yN1gt-siNxw

What's the difference in using 2D zoom vs. orthographic views?
@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
It's essentially the same thing, except that using a 2D zoom is so much faster than setting up an ortho camera. We use the 2D zoom when you already have a perspective camera which is locked in place and most likely has an image plane attached to it. You could of course use an ortho cam here, but with a single key (\), you can now access the 2D zoom tool. It's insanely useful whenever you're dealing with matching anything to image planes - which in VFX is quite a lot. Hope this helps! /H
@sanrokalv2135 жыл бұрын
why i couldn't move scale with my mouse?
@IGarrettI6 жыл бұрын
That camera zoom one. You said it's for matching reference, so can't you just go to the front view and match it from there? Sorry I still dont understand the purpose of it
@FlippedNormals6 жыл бұрын
I understand the confusion. So if you're dealing with photogrammetry or general image planes, chances are that you won't just have a front or a side view, but instead a bunch of cameras in your scene which are locked. You now have to match your model to the reference perfectly, so you need to zoom in a lot to see all the details. This camera is in a random spot in 3D space, so you cant use the regular ortho views here. Does this clear it up? :) /H

Sad story that we still have to use the attribute editor for multiobject changes. :D

It really is! That's one of my favorite thing about MODO actually; you can change attributes on all the objects at once. Super neat.

I just started using Maya 2 Month ago and since I have been working as a movie editor I soon wanted to do camera movements and video renders. As far as I´ve experienced so far Maya on Windows doesn´t really output any form of movie file that actually works. Avi is mostly an empty container and mov doesn´t even show up. Maya 2016 - on Autodesk Support Page - had an Option for rendering an Animation from fCheck to Mov - but this only worked for OS users. Right now I am stuck with rendering the frames and putting them into my "prefered" movie rendering software (Premiere). It works. But I think it´s kind of a long way to go. What are your experiences with rendering to movie? Is Maya even the Software for doing that stuff or is it mostly used for still image production?
@YaGenezis6 жыл бұрын
you'd want to export as a tiff or png sequence 99,99% of the times. I can't see any advantage in rendering directly to video... only disadvantages (ex.1 frame corrupted, have to render again the whole movie)
@e-frame53446 жыл бұрын
I got a pretty neat pc system set up just for that matter and for me its not logical, that every time I want to show a customer a preview movie I need to go through all that trouble to do it. The rest of your argument is still valid though :)
@YaGenezis6 жыл бұрын
well, usually people want to perform some form of compositing/post production (color correction, layering, lighting, masking,etc) after the output from Maya. Either way, if you want to show your customer a preview movie you can use the 'playblast' feature found under the 'Windows' menu in Maya. It's very handy and I use it to have an idea of what my animations will look like without the time and hassle of having to render in Maya>import to afterEffects>render in afterEffects. You can find more info on the 'playblast' feature here: knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/ENU/Maya-Animation/files/GUID-1C6EDC8D-DA67-490E-81F1-1205336DEBD9-htm.html
