Man i came across this video looking up topwater bass fishing stuff but clicked on your video because of your name. I actually grew up fishing for Blues and Pompano on those exact shores. My dad lived in Mobile a lot of years and we would come down to Ft. Morgan to fish as much as we could. Stoked I found your page.

Man...years ago we stayed at a holiday Inn on Pensacola Bay right at the Base of Gulf Breeze. Don't know if it's still there. Anyway, I am out on the bay beach very early just looking around. A guy was fishing over in the corner sort of, and using what looked to be a rig no more than you'd fish for bass. He hooked something big and fought it for about 45 minutes. When the fish was in shallow he handed me the rod and waded in a bit to try and grab it and pull it the rest of the way in. Had to be a 45lb Jack Crevelle. He actually bled from grabbing it at the base of the tail. Biggest Jack I ever saw. BACK IT WENT INTO THE BAY! Sure enjoyed watching a masterful fish landing!

Your videos convinced me to buy a Roosta Popper. I fish New Smyrna Beach, FL and this lure is a *shark magnet*! I usually get a massive strike about every 5 casts, which should be a warning about swimming here. My last catch was typical, a 5-1/2 foot blacktip. Stay bummy!

Thank you for the shark report. I will keep that in mind when I go to New Smyrna. Over in Daytona beach, hope there aren't any here. Lord have mercy

Try and get yourself a needlenose GT Ice-cream, its a top-water plug that can be used on a fast retrieve on calm to mild conditions and it makes a darting action left to right. We catch a lot of jack crevalles (we call 'em em Kingfish) on them here in South Africa and its probably available in the States now. Great vid btw

Yeah, good trout and good eatin', but Matt's stated target fish that day was a big Jack Cravell - he just wanted the thrill of the fight! If you'll notice, he didn't even have his 'beach buggy' with him that day, and no ice chest - so no keeping the trout. But I'm like you guys, rather have the trout than all the Jacks in the Gulf!

Flouro is the way to go, but with toothy critters like Spanish especially, they can and will cut your leader. Always check for frayed leader after each catch; change out leader as appropriate. I've lost some good lures chasing after them. Blues can turn you blue too. Jack's not much of a problem. I used to catch snook in season with diamond jigs in the surf. I shirted them with flocked up polypro rope tied to hook shank at back of lure. Love the weight of diamond jig. Casts like a dream, even on windy days. Tarpon also will hit it , but look out you're lucky to land one!

Jacks are so much fun. I was fishing for the at the mouth of an inlet when a school of monsters came in. A few of the literally chased a bunch of mullet all the way onto the shore next. They went beyond full speed about 10 feet on to the shore trying to get away from the jacks. Then they flapped their way back to the water. It was straight outta National Geographic or sumn. And actually caught my pb outta that school. 26.4”
