Fredde Kung yep, tortoises are mainly desert reptiles and they need sunshine like all day long. She isnt feeding him a proper diet either. Keeping him in a tiny new york apartment is definitely NOT good for him and he will get sick if he isnt already. He needs to be in a proper sanctuary or habitat, not in a dark apartment. Also, as he grows he will get more aggressive since she is depriving him of his natural instincts and females to mate with. Wild and exotic animals do not belong as pets.
@Giselle-jn4gd6 жыл бұрын
A little pyramiding is bound to happen in all captives, this tortoise actually looks very well cared for. Unlike severe pyramiding cases, this cutie has maintained a nice dome shape, which can be difficult to achieve if previous caretakers didn't do a good job in early life

Unusual pet for sure, but hey, there's someone for everyone out there. I grew up in Argentina and we had a neighbor that had a giant tortoise that was like 90 at that time back in the seventies, I would run everytime I saw it, it was monstrous, the other kids would ride on its back all the time. He would disappear for months and then all of a sudden, there he was again frraking me out 😂🤣 LOL

I have a small Russian tortoise named Sherman. He isn’t going to be ANYWHERE as big as Henry, nor will he live as long (50 years instead of Henry’s 100) but he is still a HUGE commitment. I would advise anyone who wants a tortoise (or any pet for that matter) to carefully do your research before you adopt! Tortoises can be so much fun, but they need a responsible and knowledgeable owner to take care of them. Good luck to anyone embarking on this journey of ownership! p.s. Sherman says hi to Henry p.p.s. 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
@invalidusername29074 жыл бұрын
mssheltn1 the hardest thing is probably cage cleaning. You should spot clean at least every week, and do a deep clean (remove and replace all bedding, clean cage props, etc). Other than that, Russian tortoises are not very difficult to take care of (besides specialized lighting)! Good luck with your research!!

4:21 His shell is a work of art. And the legs! 4:25 Just the front ones it seems. But I guess they have to be more rugged/stronger because they use them more when they walk to push off with? The inside of the shell too (4:29) is really beautiful. And the little chicken body! 🐢😍😅 ETA: Best use of a tube ever. Henry has some nice swag. That floating palm tree is where it's at. ETA 2: It takes a lot for New Yorkers to stop and stare, short of someone walking down the street naked. But unusual animals tend to do it-once I saw someone walk her (not so mini) pet pig in a park. I was mesmerized. ETA 3: Aaand now I kind of want a pet tortoise! A smaller one though; an 8-incher or so. I wonder what my cats would make of it. I think my big boy Fjodor, who is very active, curious to a default and gets easily bored, would think it's the best thing ever! 😉

His shell could be smoother for sure but he lives in New York, so he can't get the sunlight he needs 24/7. That's not to disparage the tortoise or his owner. He's an African Sulcata, so the environment is very different. Haha. Best places in the US to own a Sulcata is either Florida, Georgia, or the American Southwest. Other Deep South places like Alabama would work well. Long as it's hot and humid, they'll be happy and you'll see that in the quality of their shell. The bumpiness and ridges Henry has are marks of insufficient humidity and heat. New York is definitely not the ideal place for a Sulcata Edit because this has blown up: I want to repeat that I respect this woman and I did not comment this to disparage or encourage disparagement of her caretaking. Considering the circumstances he's definitely a healthy tortoise from my semi-educated observation(Son of a herpetologist and grew up helping take care of the animals in my father's collection, feeding, bathing, cage-cleaning, handling, etc) it's just a matter of geography that isn't even her fault. One could argue that she shouldn't have a tortoise in the first place because of that and while it's not the most ideal of conditions he certainly doesn't seem to be suffering.
