There's nothing wrong with admitting that Jeff Porcaro has had a profound influence on drummers even beyond his passing. So many have expressed an appreciation for his dedication, professionalism and passion for his craft. He was a husband, a father and a brother first, but his contributions to music will never be forgotten.

@deepdream.3 жыл бұрын
@@arrowheadftball Africa is definetly not my favourite Toto song. It's a very good song but in my opinion overrated (lyric wise for sure). You're talking about Can't Stop Loving You in the American charts. It wasn't as succesful in the US as in Europe. It actually reached number #2 in the Dutch charts and was a succesful single in Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Norway and in lesser degree in Italy as well. Toto has always been more popular in Europe than in the US. Don't pin me down on it, but Toto almost always performs this song live. It is a very beloved Toto song (especially in European countries).

@@arrowheadftball It’s not all about charting, just so you know. It’s all about favorites. I love Rosanna & Africa, but they have way better songs, imo. And, yes it didn’t chart that well in the US, but it charted pretty well in Europe.

Love the passion and energy (the late) Jeff Porcaro put into his work. Here is part of his amazing CV - Porcaro began playing drums at the age of seven. Lessons came from his father Joe Porcaro, followed by further studies with Bob Zimmitti and Richie Lepore. When he was seventeen, he got his first professional gig playing in Sonny & Cher's touring band. He later called Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon his idols at that time.[6] During his twenties, Porcaro played on hundreds of albums,[7] including several for Steely Dan. He toured with Boz Scaggs before co-founding Toto with his brother Steve and childhood friends Steve Lukather and David Paich. Jeff Porcaro is renowned among drummers for the drum pattern he used on the Grammy Award-winning Toto song "Rosanna", from the album Toto IV.[8] The drum pattern, called the Half-Time Shuffle Groove, was originally created by drummer Bernard Purdie, who called it the "Purdie Shuffle." Porcaro created his own version of this groove by blending the aforementioned shuffle with John Bonham's groove heard in the Led Zeppelin song "Fool in the Rain", while keeping a Bo Diddley beat on the bass drum. Porcaro describes this groove in detail on a Star Licks video (now DVD) he created shortly after "Rosanna" became popular.[citation needed] Besides his work with Toto, he was also a highly sought session musician. Porcaro collaborated with many of the biggest names in music, including George Benson, Nik Kershaw, Tommy Bolin, Larry Carlton, Eric Carmen, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Christopher Cross, Andrew Gold, Miles Davis, Dire Straits, Donald Fagen, Stan Getz, David Gilmour, James Newton Howard, Al Jarreau, Elton John, Leo Sayer, Greg Lake, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul McCartney, Michael McDonald, the Bee Gees, Lynn Anderson, Sérgio Mendes, Jim Messina, Pink Floyd, Lee Ritenour, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Hoyt Axton, Seals and Crofts, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Richard Marx, Warren Zevon, Don Henley, David Foster, Donna Summer, Frankie Valli and Joe Walsh. Porcaro contributed drums to four tracks on Michael Jackson's Thriller and also played on the Dangerous album hit "Heal the World". He also played on 10cc's ...Meanwhile (1992). Porcaro featured on Al Stewart's 1980 album 24 Carrots. On the 1993 10cc Alive album, recorded after his death, the band dedicated "The Stars Didn't Show" to him.[citation needed] Richard Marx dedicated the song "One Man" to him and said Porcaro was the best drummer he had ever worked with.[9] Michael Jackson made a dedication to Porcaro in the liner notes for his 1995 album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. RIP Jeff.

Wowwwwww. Man Anyone born in 70,80’s you guys live in the most amazing era in music. All we can do it’s pass it on to our kids. My son it’s 8 y and he loves the 80’s.
@JoinTheProgress3 жыл бұрын
I was born in the late 60's, so my entire foundation in music is based on late 60's through 1990, when the industry took a dramatic change downwards. It's easy to attribute the "music was better when I was a kid" to aging nostalgia, but there have actually been informal studies made on the quantifiable difference in the quality of music in this era, to that of post-1990...so it's not just me aging, it's an objective observation. There's too much profit margin now in computer/sequenced synthesized sound with auto-tuned sex-sells for the industry to even consider people who have honed their craft and composition creativity; they're just too expensive and too rare. The industry can use marketing instead to sell the noise pollution of today, and the marketing works like a charm. But everyone loses out on quality in the process.

@@colepatterson8205 Exactly. As long as it took them to induct Rush, who the F cares what those idiots at the HOF think. People will still be playing songs like this way after some of the jokes they have inducted. That's the true test of greatness.

Its because Toto wouldnt succumb to the whims of the non-musical cohort of the industry (radio, A&R execs, media, journalists and so forth). Im pretty sure there were some contractual obligations that got in the way of them being what they wanted to be, and a few other things that are not public. But my take on it is they wouldnt bend over, so they got shunned as a band. Which is interesting because individually and collectively they were involved with some of the biggest songs in musical history. Everybody wanted to work with them. Steve Lukather worked with Quincy, MJ, Lionel Richie, and so many others. Jeff worked with MJ, Quincy, Aretha, Paul Mcartney, and so many others, Paich, worked on so many other projects, it showed that the musicicians and producers recognised their ability and contribution, that everybody wanted them, even if the media didnt. Its a such a shame as while Africa and Rosanna are huge global hits, some of the songs on this album are as equally as good, and so many others since then. I firmly believe they would have achieved world domination as a group if their music got the appropriate airplay in the USA, like they did i Europe and Japan. I love Toto!! They are the very best, and every musician that has been a part of the band are amongst the very best in their field. And the new incarnation fot eh band (2021) with X, Sput, Ham, et al, take things to a new level. Long live Toto, and RIP Jeff, Mike and Ferdie

Used to be a little girl when Toto was a successful band back in the 80's. Now I'm 40 and have rediscovered the magic, the lyrics the perfect playing of each instrument and the great voices of Joseph Williams and Steve Lukater. The best band ever. Xoxo From Panamá city Panama

The weird thing is that as a band they only sold about 40 million records, but, they were some of the most well known sessions musicians of all time.

4:15 Jeff slaps that cymbal so hard. I love listening to music where I know a talented musician is making the sound and not a drum machine.
