Tough Guy - James Coburn

When I think about actors that I would classify as a “Tough Guy”. I think of Coburn at the top of my list.
James Harrison Coburn III 1928 - 2002 was a film and television actor who featured in more than 70 films, largely action roles, and made 100 television appearances during a 45-year career.
A formidable, rough-hewn leading man, whose toothy grin and lanky physique made him a perfect tough guy in leading and supporting roles in Westerns and action films, such as The Magnificent Seven, Hell Is for Heroes, The Great Escape, Charade, Our Man Flint, In Like Flint, The President's Analyst, Hard Times, Duck, You Sucker!, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Cross of Iron. In 1998, Coburn won an Academy Award for his supporting role as Glen Whitehouse in Affliction. In 2002, he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries nomination for producing The Mists of Avalon.

Cross of iron is the best movie ever made! Coburn hit it out of the park! I watch it once a year from 1980 to now!

Yes he was a tough guy, but he was also a cool guy on and off the screen. Plus he could be funny at times. A great actor.

My favorite Coburn movie is Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Can't think of anyone that played the legendary character as well as he did. He displayed some great dialogue in that flick. As the character Britt in The Magnificent Seven, the knife vs gun showdown scene always comes to mind when you think of Coburn. Fine actor and always nailed it in any role he played.

The Flint movies were good spoofs of James Bond. They also had some serious moments requiring some good acting to go with the comedy. James Coburn had the ability to accomplish both the comedy and the serious parts. There were other spy spoof films but to me the Flint movies were the best. These two movies are in my personal film collection because of James Coburn .

There may not have been any shooting, but James played a tough guy who competed in a 700 mile cross country horse race in Bite the Bullet. Participating in that took some tough huevos....

He had a very distinctive voice as well. I immediately recognized him in Monsters, Inc.. His Flint was excellent as Bond parody. He, and another distinctive voiced actor - John Carradine, suffered from arthritis that severely gnarled their hands in later years, but they continued in their craft.

Great actor. he could play multiple roles in ant genre. Of the films I have seen -- Coolest role - Britt in Magnificent Seven. Funniest role - Flint in Our Man Flint. Grittiest roles - Potts in Major Dundee and Steiner in Cross of Iron. Most likeable role Sedgwick in The Great Escape. Greatest entrance in a film - Duck You Sucker.

Coburn suffered badly from arthritis in his hands, which was noticeable in the movie Maverick, especially when he was dealing cards. His best movie, in my opinion, was Cross of Iron.

I wish more people were aware of just how great him and Steiger were in leones second in his trilogy series Once Upon a Time ..a revolution ( or Duck you sucker as it was crudely renamed ) because its just sublime ( it was banned in parts of Ireland cos Coburns plays an Irish revolutionary).Steiger is a bandit who unwittingly becomes a hero of the Mexicon revolution because his plans to rob a bank back fire when he discovers that not only is there no money in it but its full of political prisoners who then view him as a messianic figure.Coburn and steigers chemistry is beautiful esp since each character has completely different motivations .If you like westerns with a political edge i urge you see it .I think that and Cross of Iron are Coburns best because they have grest substance .I love Clint in the "Dollars " trilogy but Coburn and Steiger are so much more well rounded characters. Eastwood and Wallach are both motivated by greed alone ( which is beautiful to behold ) and Van cleef played the greed with joyful sadism .Im not comparing the films because its counter productive to do that its just that it saddens me that so many have not seen " once upon a time ...a revolution "
