Lack of diversity? Bro the movie’s cast consists of a cowboy, an astronaut, a unicorn, a potato, a dinosaur, a three headed sheep, a sentient spork and a whole bunch of other shit I couldn’t be bothered to remember. Thats a lot of diversity if you ask me.

✖ Adding a diverse character for no good reason ✔ Adding a diverse character because the actor fits the character's personality and or because it enhances the story
@DA_BOID5 жыл бұрын
The whole idea of a "diverse character" is just weird. Adding a white character in an American film isn't diverse. Adding a white character in Korean cinema is. Who even thinks like that? If I'm writing a story, I see the characters in my head as I write. I'm black, but not all of the characters I write are. So why is it so hard for filmmakers to just visualize integral characters of all nationalities working in tandem? Writing a gay character is the only problem, because we have to know the character is gay in order to recognize it, which takes away from the film unless it's centered around that character.
@louminouz5 жыл бұрын

???? I've seen this exact comment already and it still baffles me how people can excuse such shitty logic. First off the first part is BS. If a black actor perfectly embodied a traditionally white role, people would still lose their shit and say the studio is pandering or virtue signaling. Secondly, using the argument that "We should hire based on how good they are" pretty much sets us up for basically nothing. Is acting something we can rank? Does it matter if someone is better if they don't fit the bill? I'd rather have a character that makes sense.
@verdantmischief70925 жыл бұрын
@@louminouz Ethnic, racial backgrounds can contribute a lot to what a character can turn out to be though. I’m lgbt+ and I honestly don’t mind if a character is lgbt+ or not. I would like some representation BUT I don’t want their sexuality to be their entire character. I want them to be well-written and you know, actual characters. Not a stereotype or just a token placeholder to mark off Twitters’ list of progressive writing. I’ll be happy if I get a real character and that their sexuality is the not at the forefront. I understand if it’s apart of their arc or development but making them just lgbt+ is cheap to me. The reason why we teach sex education to kids of a certain age, around 5th grade and up, is because that effects them. Young girls start menstruating and young men start producing sperm; them not having any awareness of what is going on with their bodies leads to confusion, fear, and misunderstanding. The reason more people are starting to teach people about LGBTQ+ related topics is because it effects them. Kids of a certain age will start to gain attraction for other people, and sometimes that person isn't a traditional gender. Another reason we teach it is because a lot of trans people learn they're trans sometime during highschool. Not teaching about different sexualities and gender leads to confusion, fear, misunderstanding, and prejudice. You notice what these two things have in common? Not teaching them leads to confusion, fear, and overall misunderstanding. If you as a child have to rely on TVshows in order to learn about race via representation, then that speaks for your parents. I understand the desire to form connections with your favorite character, but as stated already, race doesn't make a character. Diversity is cool and welcomed, but forced diversity takes away from the overall message. People want to see diverse characters in order to make the show more believable and to show that a person's race/gender/sexuality doesn't define their abilities. But with forced diversity it reverts the character, and in turn the person, to being simply whatever minority group they fit into.

@Chippy Rin bruh my point is you cant relate anime to the video because they are obviously talking about inclusion and representation in a apperance kind of way on other words they are talkint about character that look like them. For example you can clearly tell woody is white, or buzz is white from their appearance even tho they are toys. Im trying to say anime most of the time doesnt show representation in terms of appearance but mainly cultural representation. But the video is talking about appearance of wanting to see a "black toy" or something like that.

Read “Of Mice and Men”. There’s a line in there that sums this up perfectly. Context: the book is set in the 1920s, racism is still very popular and there is a black slave (kind of) who is mistreated through the book due to his race. He talks about his childhood and says as a child he would play with the white children and the white children would play with him. Of course they noticed a difference in the tone of skin but they accepted it and didn’t question it. Then one day at the age of 12 (or 8 I don’t remember exactly) his dad stopped him from playing with them because he wanted to protect him from racism. It perfectly shows that children don’t give a shit about race. It’s all about if you’re fun or not. They couldn’t care less about skin colour or gender (maybe not that one children are very boy vs girl oriented but they’re immature it’s only natural).
@meatloafer27624 жыл бұрын
Exactly. People think about this shit way too much. The only reason racism exists is because people treat other races differently, or treat some races with more respect than others. Like, just stop thinking about race, and think about whether they're a nice person or not.

The goal of cinema is to distract people from reality, to make them happy for 90 minutes or more. Not to consistently remind them of reality, so stop politicizing movies.

Why do people keep propagating this idea that cinema was escapism. Its origins are quite literally political and a lot of stuff in movies is political wether you know it or not.

Exactly. I understand their point of view but skin color shouldn't be a problem in a kids movie. Yeah teach them they're minorities but don't tell them the movie's not good because of a lack of skin color

Yup agree 💯 I want my son to see himself with a character that has a personality like him regardless of color am Latina we really don't have much people to look up to in the sense of looking alike but why would we put up barriers for ourselves?!?! If your personality is like woody then so be it you're woody, if you're personality is like jessie then great! I don't need red or blonde hair to relate to a personality.

Yeah, honestly, I bet this "doctor" has never seen, say, Moana or Coco. But, even then, that probably wouldn't be "good enough" for her. She probably WILL only be satisfied if Toy Story 5 features a bloody tampon as a central character who also happens to be in a gay relationship with another tampon, but the tampon has an afro and was a refugee from Tamponisia or some shit.

Movies before 2020: diverse group where everyone gets along no matter their background, story is well written. (Drop a list of films that fit the description) Movies after 2020: majority of the characters are black and gay and the story means nothing thus poorly written as long as the groups are represented I don't have beef with any group whatsoever, all I care about is the story and everyone getting along, once people try to focus the spotlight on something specific, I'm done. I just want to enjoy a movie and dive into the story and immerse myself in the universe

i'm actually glad toy story isn't pushing into the lets add feminists and black people for money and aren't changing the characters just to satisfy that. They're keeping the same Toy Story we grew up with which no one had a problem with before. EDIT: did not expect this comment to get 300 likes in a day and double that in another, woah.
