@springertube4 ай бұрын
+1 Back in the mid 90s had a '91 GT-S, fabulous car. The quality was unbelievable, including an incredibly robust 16 valve NA 2.2 liter, with a drivetrain feel that belied its front drive configuration, and a luxe interior with a yet to be repeated (by anyone, including Toyota) combo of rich corduroy inserts and knit (what seemed like wool but likely high grade nylon-polyester) bolsters, something you might expect custom order from Porsche--maybe. That was all topped off by a great, then-high spec 10 speaker CD stereo. Despite the expected 16 valve configuration, it was not the sewing machine high rev'er the twin cam Hondas and Acuras would become known for, but what it gave up in RPMs it made up for with great grunt, was nevertheless not afraid to rev and was an enormously satisfying, strong pulling powerplant, especially when mated to an equally robust and willing 5 speed,...all of that seemingly forged from some single indestructable chunk of metal. It at least seemed like it would never break. And it's handling was very solid. I particularly remember a drive up the California coast, sunroof open, as it effortlessly soaked up those curves. It was the widely hailed era of near flawless Japanese cars famous for trouble-free Camrys, Accords and Legends, with those genes thankfully shared with their sportier Celica, Supra, Integra and NSX stablemates. My only complaint was that I wished for an interior scaled a little bit more for my large (long torso'd) frame, especially wanting in headroom... but once sandwiched in, it was a very comfortable and satisfying ride. The seats were well shaped for most folks, holding you in place while still being forgiving unlike many of today's bricks under the butt where you often wonder if they actually gave any thought to the seats at all? I'm not usually one for rear wing-style spoilers, but the Celica is one car that really benefited as configured on the GTS and GT with its low-profile, well integrated spoiler, as without it it was a bit of a jelly bean, less special IMO. Even if I had a lesser trim, I would have retrofitted that spoiler on it.

David, While I welcome the return of the Celica and MR2, I am particularly intrigued by the Starlet. According to the extensive research I have conducted, the Starlet was last sold on this continent 40 years ago. This means it is really overdue for a comeback. With its winning combination of 67 hp engine, 52 mpg Highway rating and rear wheel drive layout, the Starlet must have been the inspiration for the famous Corolla GT-S/AE-86 which followed a few years later. Finally, let's not forget about the 'Miata-fighting' S-FR, Toyota has been promising that for nearly a decade.🤩

I wish the new engine was a 2.2-2.4 L engine, rather than 2.0 L since there are/ have been so, so many 2.0 L 4 cylinder engines over the years. Let's say a 2.4 L, 4 cylinder engine not only would allow for more HP and torque; but it would remind us of the engine that used to power the old Honda Prelude back in the 1990s. Can u imagine the power and torque that the GR engineering crew could squeeze out of 2.4 L with all the newest tech?!

This makes me very happy as my first car was a 1984 Supra, which as any JDM-head knows, was based on the Celica at that time. When Acura brought back the Integra I was happy and considered it, but the limitation to a 4-door (and its rather unattractive rear proportions) had me pass on it. A Celica coupe that is a real 2+2 and with a manual transmission option would get my money.

Its surprising that they are not putting a hybrid in it.. But that is exciting- also with that new 2 liter Turbo it makes me wonder if they are looking at deploying that across the range as an option for people who are not fully on board even with Hybrid? I could see that being deployed in the Camry and the Rav 4- as I am sure that it will have enough power for both of those vehicles... To be honest I have often wondered if at some point they would offer the 2.4T in the Camry as a TRD model?

The sales of japanese sporty coupes always puzzles me. After two years, sales always "nose dive", despite a major freshening. And sales never recover. Toyota needs to keep the production line running. Be it the BRZ or Supra.. Both their sales are now in a downward pitch. I think they only sold 500 Supras last year. Toyota is smart not jumping in on the EV bandwagon like FOMOCO. But Toyota is in the business of manufacturing and making money on selling cars, not putting incentives (discounting) on car sales. But they tend to just throw money at cars when sales are soft.
