I traded it in with only 75K miles for a Rav-4 since the new 4-Runners that year were much larger and I really didn't meed more space. It had a 6 cylinder with a lot of power! I remember when they first announced the creation of the airbag. It was developed to protect people who refuse to wear their seatbelt. So, conversely, if you wear your seatbelt, you don’t need the damn airbag. I don’t really like airbags. I like to to wear my seatbelt instead. If you rely on an airbag and a sensor fails, then what? And further insurance companies have a policy of totaling vehicles when the airbags go off, so a little fender bender could conceivably cost you your brand new car

The way things are going they are going from V-8s to twin turbo or hybrid V-6s, then to turbo fours. I figure soon they will go from turbo fours to twin turbo threes with astronomical boost. Blown head gaskets and burning oil before 50,000 miles will be the standard.

I had one a 2022 TRD Off Road Premium in Lunar Rock. I bought it in October 2021. I was doing Uber/Lyft and couldn’t afford the 12mpg with $3.86/gallon gas prices. I just (27Jan2024) bought a Tacoma V6 TRD Off Road Access Cab because I don’t need the back seat room and like the aesthetic better and the 2024 Tacoma is going back to the Xtra Cab. If I buy another SUV it’ll be a Lexus GX 460 since it will be gently used unlike a 4Runner.

I love how Scotty believes technology can never change, he is like a modern amish tech should have stopped in the late 90’s no way they keep the 4.0 its a shame because its great but its inevitable

Thanks for telling it like it is. I'd rather have my 4.7 liter in my 2006 Tundra than any dual turbo in a new Tundra.

@kidus70177 ай бұрын
It’s inevitable they will do it Scotty. This is a high volume vehicle and if they dare take the v8 from the tundra and the v6 from the Tacoma it’s just inevitable. The ICE was at its pinnacle of engineering where you had those great engines but it’s sad even with that much technology they can’t pass these emissions regulations anymore.

I wanna know how much he charges to change the spark plugs on that Toyota V6 engine he loves so much. I was going to change them routinely on the Avalon my wife had years ago, but when I learned how much work was involved I decided to wait until it was absolutely necessary. Turned out that they lasted forever, but I still hate that they made it so difficult when it finally does have to be done. (Pretty good engine otherwise.)

@@ArcoZakus Scotty has actually mentioned multiple times he recommends 4 cyl on Toyota sedans because spark plugs are easy to change unlike the V6. I know the Avalon is V6 only but yeah that's the price to pay

@@Argedis , Yes, I have seen those videos and agree. The second generation Camry my wife drove for 17 years was great to maintain (DIY), but underpowered for its weight by US standards. All the cars I have owned have had four cylinder engines so I didn't mind that part, but she had owned big American cars with V8s before that so that was her biggest complaint about that Camry. She loved how it looked, how comfortably it rode, and did not mind the mushy handling, which was my least favorite thing about it. i was impressed with the design, quality of materials and manufacturing, and ease of maintenance. By the time it needed to be replaced she really wanted something roomier with MOAR POWER. The later generations of Camrys had gotten a more powerful inline four cylinder engine and more interior space, but less attractive interior materials so as to not intrude into the more recently introduced Lexus's space. In true Scotty Kilmer fashion we found a used Avalon that was a better buy than comparable Lexus models that met her demands for luxury, space, and performance. The Avalon was not bad looking, either IMO. Similar trade-offs between comfort vs. handling as the Camry, but much roomier inside while not too much larger outside. Also much better acceleration than the older Camry.

Why is Toyota constantly downsizing their motors and hanging turbos on them? Turbo lag, less real torque and horsepower are destroying proven vehicles with these types of changes. On multiple Toyota's mpg suffers, the towing capability is diminished in the mid size Tacoma, 4 Runner and who knows what is next. Ford (Fix Or Repair Daily) at least still has a V8 available. So in an attempt to meet CAFE standards Toyota has taken steps backward with their move to 4 cylinder turbos and producing vehicles that will not have the longevity of earlier models. Personally I would not want to launch or pull my boat out of the water with a 4 cylinder turbo due to turbo lag and how it affects control of launching or retrieving a 20 foot, 3800lb wakeboard boat 4 cylinder turbos just can't handle this type of load in and out of the water at a busy launch ramp.

Great video. But many "automotive journalists" expect the 2025 4Runner to have the same 4 cylinder options as the 2024 Tacoma (with and without hybrid).

For towing in the smaller trucks, Hybrid AWD could make up for the turbo, but there's really no substitute for a V8 in a Tundra unless they did a supercharged V6. I don't think I've ever seen true 4WD combined with Hybrid AWD before though.

Bought a 2024 4Runner last week. Best purchase since my 2013 F150 SuperCrew 5.0L Coyote. Get them before they are gone. I build turbo hotrods. Turbos make great power, but the constant heat soaking takes it toll on longevity. A good NA engine will last over 200K miles. BTW, I paid dealer cost for the 4Runner. Interest rates are killing the car market. Dealer had to unload these vehicles because they weren't selling their allocation from Toyota. A 4.0L or larger turbo engine running 5-7 pounds of boost will last forever, but a 2.7L 4 cylinder at 20 lbs. of boost is not going to hold up. Buyer beware.
