As the owner of a dumpster business, the Christmas holiday rolls around and I can't help but look at my trucks and trailers and realize they look like modern day "sleighs".
We have done Santa's Redneck Sleigh for 3 consecutive years, but this year I added a little bit a vintage feel to it.
In order to justify its existence in my fleet of trucks, I had a brilliant idea to use the old dump truck I just recently got running. With the old white square body of the Ford F750 and a red dump bed, it just screams "Christmas time".
This year was even better, word quickly spread about our mission, instead of our typical lone wolf approach. Friends, family and the entire community rallied behind Rolling Ops. People donated toys for all ages and of all shapes and sizes, eager to support the foster home and bring joy to the children there.
To me the dump truck became a symbol of hope and generosity as it made its rounds around town, collecting the donated toys from various drop-off and pick up points.
With each toy that was loaded into the truck, my excitement grew. Even though I always want the stack to be bigger and better, I knew whatever toys and essentials we could gather would bring smiles to the faces of these kids. With the size of the truck, whatever did psck in it always looked small.
The goal TO STUFF the bed was always large. But a quick glance at a handful of receipts proved that thousands of dollars were spent by the community to back this cause. Local stores, organizations, news channels, and radio stations promoted it. People wanted to see it succeed for another year.
Unpacking the truck at our local youth home. Chaddock was just as exciting as filling it. The stack seems much bigger when crammed into a few offices before the organization prepares to sort and wrap them for each child in the network.
I can only hope that a few children's eyes lite up with excitement as they open these. The impact a community makes can extended far beyond that day. The toys provided not only entertainment but also a sense of belonging and love for children at a foster home.
If you have an idea, the equipmemt, or the resources, don't be afraid to get a little redneck with it. Take a few days out of your busy life to make something happen, make a difference - because if you don't, no one will.
Whether that is a couple free junk removal jobs for veterans. Some house cleaning work for the elderly. Or landscaping jobs that require some escavation or heavy hauling for a select few in the community. Just do it.
You don't have to do it all. You just have to initiate, support and encourage others in the process. You'd be shocked what people can accomplish, even a trash man can rally a community.
