bruh that ending hit LIKE A TRUCK!! the thing is, i never really realized how "integral" Trash Taste was during the entirety of 2020-2022, until i basically recapped these past two years and, for the MOST part (minus a few weeks), Trash Taste has been one of most constants in an otherwise the most INconstant time period for literally EVERYONE!! so having that one stable "thing" to do, every week, now i realize, HAS been a lot of help in taking my mind off for a couple hours at a time, and at LEAST be a "yes, i can expect to be sitting down like this next week, as well as the week after that, and the one after that", WAS quite helpful for someone who thrives on routine and who's life was just a mess of nothingness meanwhile... so yeah, thank you guys, thank everyone, on camera AND behind the scenes!

For anyone that doesn't understand texture, as my music teachers taught me: The texture of sound is that trait of sound that makes you distinguish one note played in a piano from the exact same note played in a cello or any other instrument
@manishsigdel8242 жыл бұрын
Isn't that timbre ?
@Missingnin692 жыл бұрын
@@manishsigdel824 timbre and texture are often used interchangeably by musicians - texture is a much more intuitive way to describe timbre for non-musicians - "texture" is sometimes used to refer to the arrangement by musicians, ie whether the ensemble a single melody part against chords, or 4 different melodies at the same time, etc. Really timbre is more scientifically measured by waveform anyway, though the subjective associations we might associate with a timbre are better described through emotional language.
@SheliakDragon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I still don't really get it but it made slightly more sense than "like the drums in Billy Jean" lol
@manishsigdel8242 жыл бұрын
@@Missingnin69 i mean there are words to define the various things that you talked about like orchestration etc. In my personal opinion the boys just made a mistake and said texture instead of timbre like how the confused integer and integral a billion years ago. Kevin wasn't really trying to use all-encompassing words in the conversation and was kinda specific. But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this
@Missingnin692 жыл бұрын
@@manishsigdel824 the difference between music and maths is that mathematics has a more or less universally used (with much variation in some areas but not in others) vocabary internationally - whereas with music, music theory is not some overarching theory with one set terminology, there are regional and subcultural differences between the words composers use. I've heard plenty of musicians casually refer to timbre as texture - again, probably because many feel it captures the subjective experience of sound better. I'm in Perth and familiar with WAAPA's composition department that Kevin went to - they focus very heavily on graphic scores and spectral music there which involve a lot of stuff to do with texture. I also think the distinction between texture and timbre itself isn't necessarily binary. A homophonic texture of a bunch of strings playing in synch as an orchestral section really does have a different timbre to it than a solo violin - such are the wonders of sound. Polyphonic texture has individual instruments playing melodies, but these instruments will no doubt be heard with thinner timbres than if playing block chords. Likewise, this continuity would apply to electronic and electro-acoustic music. On the topic of orchestration, orchestration can refer to arrangement in general, as well as specific arrangement techniques for orchestral or classical ensembles - e.g. familiarities of what arranging styles work for different ranges or properties of instruments. So there's a bit of overlap there too.

Great episode! 👍 Just one nitpick: next time please make sure to set equal levels on all your mics. I understand this was probably a quickly thrown together setup, but it's kinda oof when one mic has very noticeably lower volume than the others, and especially so if it's your guest's mic like has happened here. Very often the guests have rather interesting things to say, and it's a bummer if every comment or 'mhm' sound completely drowns them out.

Fellow Perthian here! Northbridge (and adjacent city side clubs) haven't felt the same since the loss of Fast Eddys 4am drunk feasts. As a huge fan of Anime OST beeps and boops, this is definitely a top 5 guest episode for me. I could listen to Kevin talk shit for hours, I want him and a lot of alcohol on an After Dark episode!

As a person from Perth it is absolutely wild hearing Kevin refer to places I’m familiar with like Northbridge and Mount Lawley. Shoutout to the fellow Perthians, all 2 of you! 😎✌️

Yeah I just got whiplash, hearing about Mt Lawley and Northbrige. (I know it’s a late response, but us Perth people have to stick together in this wide world of the internet)

I'm really happy, that Kevin finally got to be on the podcast. I followed him on twitter because I really liked his music in Made in Abyss and one day he tweeted something about Trash Taste, which made me discover the podcast and the boys. So thanks Kevin Penkin for making great music and showing me such great youtubers.

Making music is magic. I've had my fair share of that in high school singing in a choire and while we were obviously not proffessionals we actually got to sing on some quite big stages for just a normal highschooler because of a project in my country. Being in the choire gave me some of my best high school memories and some of the best times of my life so far. I joined basically because I had a few friends trying to convince me and I ultimately tried it because of potential for a better grade. I met the coolest people in my school there, I had a blast hanging out with them on trips and I had the absolute honor to sing a few pieces like "Carmina Burana" in front of hundreds of people. Seriously if anyone reading this has the opportunity - I can't guarantee that in your school/country you'll have the same experience but it's probably worth a shot and worst case scenario you can just resign. From my experience most people working in this sort of area are really amazing like this one lady that led the project that had us sing these beautiful classical pieces was truly woderful and inspiring, our music teacher and conductor was just the nicest lad ever and all the other people I've met just... I kinda feel like their passion for music made them into better people in general. And the experience of being on stage performing absolute masterpieces to an audience is just something else and I didn't even feel that much stress about it because I had about a hundred other people singing so if I messed something up slightly there's other people to cover that up but I still felt inspired to do my absolute best and it always came out so beautiful. Even though I ended up steering my life away from music I'll always remember that time fondly.

I finished the first season of Made in Abyss yesterday and I can wholeheartedly say that Kevin did an absolutely astounding job with it. It was one of the only anime I have watched which nearly made me cry, and half of that emotion was brought out by the soundtrack. Glad to finally see you on the podcast with the boys and I'm looking forward to experiencing more of your work in the future.

I finished it last week and won't shut up about it. Binged S1 and the Movie. I damn near cried so many times and lost it at my treasure. The song pathway and Hanezeve Caradhina are some of the best in S1. Let's be real. The ost was just GOAT.

Good episode! However, Joey's mic is like a good 50% louder than the rest, might want to check in on that.

As a musician it was really awesome to watch him describe a lot of musical concepts to non-musicians. Kevin is insanely bright, talented, and hardworking, and usually musicians like that have a loud voice in their head that tells them they're not good enough or worthy. I can totally see where the sensitivity and self-deprecating talk comes from. Hope he keeps producing incredible music!

finally got around to watching this, i absolutely adore this man and his music. i'm a big tower of god fan and his music really, really hit different, it fit the story so so so well and looking into his other stuff felt so lovely. seeing what a person can do and how beautiful and amazing a story can be portrayed with music when the composer/team has freedom of creativity is insane.
