From a recent interview with Shigeto Koyama (an Art Director at Trigger): "think of other studios trying to make the finest foods in a restaurant, whereas at Trigger, we're okay with just continuing to make a decent burger. It's still something that is simple to make, something we're confident in making, but it's still something that everyone can enjoy. And it's also bad for you." Pretty much sums this up.

But it's not the best there is nor is it the worst, it's just simply, good. They're animation style is unique, it's what makes them.. them. But that doesn't necessarily mean their stories are also just as good. Promare was great fun but you don't watch that for an amazing story, it was just a cool film to watch.. Same deal with most of their other works. And unpredictable? They love to throw in a Deus Ex Machina to fix an unstable plot point, usually involving Robots, Space or Aliens. Heck, Edge Runners even ends up in space Just because it's Original, doesn't necessarily mean it be will good, Brand New Animal, for example had a fun and interesting premise, the animation was fine but the story went nowhere. Or go try Inferno Cop instead, for some truly "amazing" animation. Look, I still look forward to them because I know how good they are. I just expect them to do as good as they always have and to continue making a "decent burger".

I think Trigger's biggest issue is having a story that peaks at the middle of the show, then just goes off the rails. The characters are good, the conflicts are good, the dynamics between protagonist are good. But they just get all weird and crazy with the ending to the point of not making sense capped with tragedy and loss. Which is why I think CyberPunk ER worked as well as it did. They could only do so much in that space, it had to work in the world of CyberPunk.

SSSS.GRIDMAN was lowkey one of my most memorable anime in recent years, the ending threw me for a loop, but it was the fact that it built up to it, that there were clues throughout the story, and the question looming of whether or not these massive kaiju battles truly matter due to the city resetting but the memories of those lost being wiped out. The feeling of euphoria when that final moment hit and it all came to a realization this was just an escape, that is was someone copeing with their lives, and finding control in the only world they could. Yeah yeah, "it was all a dream", but the way it was handled, and the fact that there were breadcrumbs that looking back now if you rewatch it, you can see how everything was setup and built up from the ground, it didn't feel like the classic "OTT Trigger Ending". Yeah, it wasn't "for everyone", I'd definitely say, but there was something sincere about it, and the respect they paid to the series with not only fanservice but homage to the classics showed this wasn't "just another project". (Also Rikka's Thighs; shut up, we were blessed.)

As a manga fan in defense of MHA, we were hyping up season 5 for a good reason and that's because My Villain Academia was a legitimately really good arc, but then for whatever reason, either the movie or from what i hear Japanese fans don't like villain arcs, the anime rushed the hell out of it while dragging out the other two arcs that season. Which is a shame because it's a pretty important arc and I think it took away the hype even more, though at least the current season has been good so far

i also just really hate in general how people judge anime based on the studio name plastered onto it instead of actually looking at the staff. the only directors most watchers really know are like masaaki yuasa, hayao miyazaki, and satoshi kon. MAYBE naoko yamada. like studios aren't a generate anime machine they have actual people working on them and not every anime from the same studio is going to have the same people working on it.

I think what I notice is that most of Imaishi's work before cyberpunk were all too similar, when it was gurren lagann and kill la kill it felt unique, but after that they just felt a bit repetitive in elements used. So it is a good thing to have new outside influences to gain inspiration from and make new narratives around, it was a good change of pace for the people at the studio
@QuartzRoolz

@@marcodragneel8035 dude directed 1 thing after Kill La Kill and before Cyberpunk, which was Promare (plus some shorts for japan Anime Expo And starwars vision). if you want to say that Promare was repetitive thats fine, but like... he did one thing. IDK I think the takes from the lads are fine. I feel its kinda weird Garnt only bought up Gridman and not Dynazenon, when (atleast IMO) Dynazenon is the stronger show overall. but yeah, I think trigger has a reputation for Imaishi, and while I love his stuff, the studios other directors are also really talented and deserve more credit. Akira Amemiya did great with Gridman and Dynazenon, and Yoh Yoshinari, while their shows arent to my taste personally, is really good with more slice of life simple shows like little witch and BNA.

@@QuartzRoolz true, one name is not the entire studio staff. But you can't deny his influence on some of the things they do. Like aliens, robots, and risque women fashion taste. @QuartzRoolz
@QuartzRoolz 2 жыл бұрын
@@marcodragneel8035 honestly I... can deny that? the only non-imaishi show that has Aliens, Robots and risque Womens fashion in the style your mentioning is Franxx, the one outright bad show. Kiznaiver has none of those things at all, Gridman and Dynazenon do have Aliens and Robots but thats more because of the original 96 series than trigger, and Little witch and BNA have none of those things either. what Imaishi definatly does bring to trigger as a whole is an overall Push for More animation in general. trigger shows tend to move a lot more consistantly than other anime, with character design being simpilar to compensate. thats 100% and Imaishi thing, and thats what he imbued into the studio. Again, byall means, I am a trigger appologist. I really like the studio and all of their shows (even franxx... a bit...) and will go to bat for them at any opertunity. but I think people boil trigger down to imaishi tropes just because they watched kill la Kill and Promare and think thats what every series is like.

Seeing trigger adapt cyberpunk the way they did was incredible. I was talking to a buddy of mine and I said “I’m almost glad it wasn’t their original story; I feel like they would’ve found a way to make some sort of happier ending and/or to default back to typical trigger tropes.” I really do hope they embrace different types of story telling in the future, original or not, because it’s evident they can animate and convey something incredible while still maintaining their brand and doing what they do best.

Trigger has some of thee most amazing talent in the industry. They are consistently a studio I look forward to seeing their next project cause its never dull. That being said after seeing CyberPunk, I whole hearty believe they can do better with slight oversight. As long as they have someone to reign them in a little their work just gets elevated to another level. There are so many projects I want them to work on now. Their in house original stories are frankly amazing but I really want to see them adapting other more western works now.

4:00 and style. Trigger takes a lot of influence from Go Nagai who is the creator mazinger, cutie honey and devilman. Mazinger z and other 70s super robots inspired gurren lagann of course. Kill la kill is cutie honey on adrenaline. The villains for many trigger anime they have that devilish eye look which was known from the devilman manga. This is why I pray if they can get a partnership and righrs to them that trigger makes a new mazinger z anime. Then use it to revitalize the super robot genre or mechas in general.

Watching those shows makes me want Trigger to make a Transformers anime. Given how the character designs from SSSS Gridman are references to Transformers characters. It's also nice to have a really good anime based on a Tokusatsu series. Fuuto PI came out this year but the anime community didn't really talk about it much. And as a Kamen Rider fan I thought it was eh.
@feedzuh
@feedzuh 2 жыл бұрын
@@FireFury190 I think Fuuto PI's issue is because it rides directly on the main story of Kamen Rider W, and it's hard for people that haven't watched W to catch up even if Fuuto PI gave good briefs. Gridman Universe animes use the connection loosely (until Gridman is revealed to be the original one) and the whole SSSS.DYNAZENON is entirely original.
@FireFury190
@FireFury190 2 жыл бұрын
@@feedzuh Nah I knew Double's story beforehand and still thought it was meh. The problem is that it didn't feel like a lot was accomplished. Which might be because the manga still hasn't finished and explained a lot of the mysteries set up with Shadow Fuuto. And the uncertainty of whether we'll get a 2nd season or not. Doesn't help that we only cover 4 cases in 12 episodes. Cases now take 3 episodes instead of 2 like in the original show. Though it did skip a case in the manga that was filler. So it'll likely do that in the future.

Darling in the frax wasn't a trigger show. Trigger helped with the premise a bit and animation on the first 11ish episodes but it was by far mostly an A-1 Pictures x Colverworks show. You can tell who worked on what in the end credits on every episode.

@@alexmartin6561 A1 was only co-production no? It was primarily animated by Trigger and CloverWorks. Which just sounds to me like A1 and trigger put the money in. And Trigger and CloverWorks made the actual show. It's why you often see IG on production staff for WIT series. Much like WIT to IG, CloverWorks is an A1 offshoot, so A1 were often on their production. They were in the middle of splitting from A1 (as A1 pictures Koenji studios) at the time, and rebranded to CloverWorks in the middle of DitF. Doesn't really change the fact that A1 was only on the production side and had nothing to do with the series as a whole. It was A1's Koenji but as their own company which became CloverWorks.

Second half was good. Season 6 So far, good. I would also say it's the best season so far IMO, nothing but non-stop action. All in all, I think it's a good anime that can lose people with its slower sections. The season 3 training arc is a good example or season 4s concert arc some people like getting to see the characters in a more relaxed slice of life setting and some people will abhor it you can't make everyone happy. The fan base is definitely the shows Achilles heel though, they are something else.

No one said the take about Trigger that I wanted to hear. They have strength and it’s not story telling. It’s animation. When it comes to animation, they are top 3. I actually got into MHA when the first season was ending, and I wentahead and read ahead in the manga. At the time I was reading I think the manga was only up to around chapter 100, but a lot more chapters released before season 2 aired. Then, somewhere between chapter 120 and chapter 150, it just completely lost me, I just did not care anymore and I was struggling to read any further so I just dropped it. It was not very surprising to me at all when people told me the anime fell off after season 2, because I had the exact same reaction to the manga. MHA should be completely in my ballpark, but it just failed to hold my attention.

The problem of My Hero Academia isn’t because Bones does horrible animation but rather how the author writes the story. He keeps forgetting the rules of “Show don’t tell” A good example is the recent episode where Deku uses all quirks at once. Like bro I don’t need you to tell me everything that is happening on screen like “ok so I’m going to use black whip to lift everyone off the ground and then I’m going to use all my force into this punch because it all depends on me now” like bro sh*t up and show the action itself already

for Trigger i honestly believed they were confused on how to adapt cyberpunk and just tried intently to tell a story in their own way but wasn't really the potential of Trigger's style. Because if you've seen how they built up promare, LWA, gridman there was a sort of formula they add quirks and stuff and each climactic scene had a really good impact bit by bit to make it interesting and they mastered it. for edgerunners it was like them going out of their comfort zone for cdpr money lol. they exposition dumped lucy's backstory, couldn't really get that much detail on the other side characters, and even the antagonists weren't that much of an impact of the character's self-conflict like they used to. my point is that garnt is right that trigger IS "experimenting" hell there's even a documentary of them teaching new staff shown on the production of the series because they're gonna be the new style. but i just feel like them being "overrated" is kinda wrong to a degree that everyone is more vocal about hating their shows than people loving them when they're not showing.

There are definitely a lot of boring parts to the manga, like the beginning of season 5 or getting their licenses but when it gets good it gets really good. The my villain academia arc was pretty good and while the anime didn't completely butcher it, they could have done so much better and I feel the same way with season 6. The 6th season doesn't have bad animation or anything but the art direction and music choices and everything give the whole arc a much lighter tone than the manga did
