I really hope one day Mexico becomes a safe and prosperous country. They have so much potential for it too. Hard working and friendly people, great food, amazing history, culture and architecture. I live in northwest Indiana. When she was alive my mom was so terrified every time I went to Chicago alone that I was going to be murdered, despite the fact that she taught me all the proper precautions. I go during the day, if I have to be there at night I will ask someone to walk me to my car if I need to, I’m aware of my surroundings and always sober… I would have missed some great experiences just for the fact that I couldn’t find someone to go with me if I wasn’t willing to go alone. You can live your life full of regret or you can take chances with reasonable precautions (like you are doing) and have a great time. I couldn’t let her anxiety stop me from living.

@@RichieValentine I was in a rented car. Most cops are fine but then there are corrupted cops who lie just to get you to pay them. Most of the trip I was fine. Last year I was driving through Saltillo and got stopped for some bogus missing signature, cops wanted to “make it better”, I acted dumb and naive, they got fed up after spending 40 mins (with no pay )with me and let me go. I thanked them and left. Yes color photo copy or you can use an old drivers license. Out of the 3 times that I’ve rented a car only got stopped once by corrupt cops. Out of the times I drove my personal car I’ve have gotten stopped 6 times and one of those was a cop asking for money in Saltillo (2022) Therefore, you’ll be fine. Knowledge is power

I’m part Mexican and most of my family won’t go down there anymore. I also worked for the court for years and we would get letters from relatives we were trying to have the juveniles potentially move in with to stay with family if nobody on our side of the border was able to, and several would tell us they were not in a safe area and that their mail was also messed with a lot due to the cartels etc. Up to you if you want to take the chance but my luck isn’t always the best. I think I would feel better if I felt like I blended in more. I speak some Spanish but am not fully fluent.

On all trips I've done, be it Europe, US, Asia, it's as if my late Dad's advice is still fresh. I make it a point as if I came from work, that is I'm safely tucked in my room. Dad said to be home when night is about to set in because that's the time the bad elements go out. Done my laundry for day's worn clothes because I travel light (but I always wanted to have clean and freshly-washed clothes), eaten my bought dinner, and studying my notes for following day's activities. Anyway, I'm not interested to go out at night, even if it's a safe place because sights are not seen in photographs anyway.

@danmur2797
@danmur2797 11 ай бұрын
I would say even at night toll roads are ok, if you stick to main roads/highways. And vice versa if you go to rural country back roads in cartel dominated areas are dangerous anytime of day sunshine or not. Safest way though is to just travel by the high end buses common throughout Mexico. But even by car is safe just sticking to main highways.

@@danmur2797 I agree: WHERE and HOW you travel is more important than WHEN. In the past two weeks in Mexico have been on several bus trips, and one inter-urban train trip (safer than riding public transportation in LA or Chicago).

This has happened multiple times to solo female travelers. Some places are just more dangerous then other places and Mexico is one of them.
@danmur2797
@danmur2797 11 ай бұрын
Its not exactly the same. The Middle East is very patriarchal where women have no rights, especially without a male relative. And zealots and terrorists there enforce their views on westerners. Also countries like Iran and Russia also hold westerners hostage as prisoners as bargaining chips In Mexico it has been far more likely to have an average or even great experience than a dangerous one and the culture is more western in nature than the Middle East. Plus no major geopolitical issues. Think about this--prior to Covid in 2019 Mexico was the 7th most visited country globally receiving 40 million visitors annually. After Covid from 2020-2022 Mexico rose to become the 2nd most visited country on earth behind just France. You'd think if Mexico was as dangerous as the U.S. media and government says, there would be far more than a handful of tourists getting caught up in situations. Especially considering the tens of millions that have visited every year without incident.

Nice cars make you more of a target and how you dress. When my family gose to Mexico they alway take a old car and they don’t take the nicest clothing because people will think you have a lot of money
@danmur2797
@danmur2797 11 ай бұрын
I mean you can dress stylish, but really do as the Romans do applies. You're not wearing a tux typically or go out dressed like a Yuppie in a bad neighborhood. My family grew up in rural Mexico and the common dress style was same as rural America--jeans and shirt with cowboy boots or sneakers. A cowboy hat or baseball hat as well. Living there a bit, that was exactly my everyday clothing style. Now that I'm older I'd still do the same if I visited again, but I'm more eager to see the rich cultural offerings in cities where locals tend to be a little more urbane trendy and worldly--think everyday Italians. Still you typically won't see designer duds except in the wealthiest enclaves of cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, etc. So its easier to dress higher end and blend in in these places. Heck French fashion labels have thrown prominent fashion shows in these cities in recent years. And Mexican designers do all the time. Elsewhere in Mexican cities, everyday jeans, shirt, or for ladies maybe blouses/dresses, skirts, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. In terms of cars yes--trucks are especially coveted by cartels. But most other cars are usually ok.

I think it helps that you're travelling in a matchbox. But, I question your brushing off the US Advisory, like your "need" to go. Nobody says the destinations aren't wonderful or the people living there aren't great, it's purposely inserting yourself into an open landscape controlled by people smarter & harder than 2 young Americans, who have deadly serious business to conduct. Ask the families of the 43+ students disappeared from loaded buses in SW Mexico if that activity seemed risky or was worth dying for.

The point of the video is that as long as you have planned ahead and know your typical dangers to look out for- it's better to take the risk to do the things you truly love. Wear an adjustable money bag strapped & hidden under your clothes next time for pocket items, and keep it in front. It is foolproof.

As an Indian guy with a turban and a beard I rarely drive through the US let alone go to Mexico. I’ve flown to major cities and felt weird and the stares I get in slightly rural areas are not friendly. I will stay in my multicultural city in Canada. Even here away from the cities it can be an unfriendly environment. I slightly envy those who don’t have to worry about what they look like. Although these two would probably stick out in Mexico lol.

Its a real shame that so many people have chosen prejudice over natural curiosity. If you ever did come to my town during German fest i would hope two strangers could talk for hours over a spread of mutually acceptable food and drink and ask innocent questions like “why the turban and beard” and “why the leather short pants, weird felt hats with strange pins and racing dogs that look to be half ferret”

You would probably be treated a lot better in Mexico. Mexicans are very respectful people. People might look a lot , but out of curiosity, not to make fun of you.
