I really liked that ship. Looked good and was logical that the NX was the next step of the Intrepid. I think there were maybe 10-15 Ships in the Fleet at the time and that maybe 5 are Stuck to the Sol System for defence and science dutys and maybe some Intrepids are set to Escort and Patrol Dutys for Freigthers and so on. Or maybe small exploration on nearby systems. I think its top speed would be warp 4 or smth like that mayb it was built with Max warp 3.5 and upgraded later explaining the big Nacells and chunky design.

I still like the idea that the Franklin and Enterprise were competing for some sort of x-prize (similar to the competition that resulted in the F-22). Starfleet wanted a warp 5 ship, Franklin was the first to break warp 4, but ultimately failed to get full production. The Archer designed engine won and the Franklin was put into mothballs until the war, when it was refitted with Archer engines and recommissioned NX-326.

That competition concept is an interesting idea! Certainly there is a possibility of competitive designs.

I like the chunky look of this ship. I think it really fits perfect for the era. It's not so much about styling as it is just getting the job done. Seems like the "wings" should mean this is meant to fly through atmosphere but they don't seem like they would do much being so front heavy. Stabilizers make sense maybe. Either way I like the tacked on, primitive chunky looks. I thought of this era as, different manufacturers made generic "off the shelf" parts, and ship builders just bought the parts and slapped a ship together, including Star Fleet.
@futurerandomness16206 жыл бұрын
it would be cool if they put the reaction control thrusters at the end of those wings. The further out you can put them the more leverage you would have, which would equal faster roll. Unfortunately they didn't do that

I always thought they were radiator fins. Y’know, to counter the bridge being cooked between the nacelles, they shunt excess heat to the fins-probably via those pipes. Coolant pipes, maybe?

Radiators are a surprisingly necessary part for _any_ kind of space travel that gets frequently overlooked by nontechnical drama writers. There's a cheap ebook called "The Hot Equations" by Ken Burnside that goes into it, look it up.

I actually really like this one for some reason. It seems like it could be a hot rod of a ship with some upgrades. I like that the nacelles are big and kind of clunky. Probably due to bigger but less powerful/efficient coils than the NX, but that gives us some progression. It would imagine either a nacelle swap or just upgrading the internals of the existing ones plus a newer warp core would be possible as its a pretty plain design. If any survived the Romulan War, I'd imagine some admirals would have them upgraded and assigned as their personal flagship. Small tight knit crew, veterans who can be counted on, but may not fit well in the new Federation Starfleet. The only thing I don't like about the design (and the NX) is the hood scoop. It doesn't appear to serve any purpose at all, It's too small to be a landing bay, it's not a bussard collector, and doesn't seem to be a sensor array or observation deck, so it's just a nonfunctional hood scoop. What I'd REALLY love to see is this ship in a TMP era refit. Refit Nacelles, Inset deflector, phaser balls and torpedo launchers. 24 to 30 crew on patrol or as a fast courier. And no, not the Akyazi class. It's different enough that I don't like that one as much.

Glad to have found someone that went into depth on looking at this ship. I had questions about it's details. It was nice to listen to your analysis on the shape, design and details. I agree they should have shown this ship more on screen as it obviously would have been more in the Earth fleet than the NX Class ships like Enterprise and Colombia.

The ship originally was designed to reach warp 3.5. In the early 2160s, the Intrepids were refitted. The engine cores were replaced, which enabled them to reach the speed of warp 5.6 for a limited time. The ship had a crew complement of 46. Due to the heat emanating from the bussard collectors, storage rooms were placed in the saucer sections beneath them. Cooling fins were attached to the rear of the nacelles. I absolutely love the Intrepid design. I think the only thing that needs changing is the warp nacelles being pushed so forward. And as a nod to the future Intrepid class ships from Voyager, maybe the reason it has fins is because it is capable of atmospheric flight, and the details on the underside of the ship might hide enclosed landing gear.

fins help radiate the heat.. maybe they glow a little bit more orange as time goes by until you go into warp and use FTL friction to drag off all that excess heat :D

This class was fitted with phase cannons and torpedo launchers. (ENT episode: "The Expanse") The Intrepid class was 165 meters long. (ST reference: The Official Starships Collection #44) An elliptical deflector dish was integrated into the front of the saucer, where the leading edge had been cut out. It was flanked by sensor pallets. The engines were housed in a shortened engineering section. Impulse engines were attached to the rear of the saucer, and nacelle pylons with one nacelle each were mounted on the engineering section. These nacelles were shorter than their NX-class counterparts, and overlapped with the primary hull. (ST reference: The Official Starships Collection #44) Due to the heat emanating from the bussard collectors, storage rooms were placed in the saucer sections beneath them. Cooling fins were attached to the rear of the nacelles. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures) In the early 2160s, the Intrepids were refitted. The engine cores were replaced, which enabled them to reach the speed of warp 5.6 for a limited time. Other new technologies were installed as well, including deflector shields and tractor beams. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures) The engine room was similar to that of the NX-class, but smaller than on the Columbia-class starship. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novels: A Choice of Futures, Uncertain Logic)

The 'fins' might be a set of warp bubble stabilizers. Allowing the bubble to be more flattened and widened that a true sphere around the warp core center. These would be 'done away with' in later ships by fitting stabilizers elsewhere on the hull, mounted flush or inset into the hull, or even replaced by ones that projected there effect beyond the physical hull of the ship from someplace internally mounted. Considering that this is a pre-Warp 4 design, the large nacelles might be as proposed, modified existing shorter nacelles and requiring externally mounted stabilizers. Just my thoughts, Frank-ly speaking.

@builder3966 жыл бұрын
Well, the NX class was definitely capable of athmospheric flight at fairly low speeds (200 kph i think) so having fins on the Intrepid for aerodynamic purposes makes sense (sepecially with their placement), but the real problem is making an actual landing without any kind of landing gear.

The first antimatter powered ship? Accelerated tritium depletion from the trititanium hull plating was causing blow outs on the windows in the area immediately around the Bussard collectors. I would call it a warp 4+ ship IF they over drove the warp nacelles risking a burn out. They discovered that the antimatter reactor could overpower the coils , as they replaced the old nacelles they moved the smaller assemblies back to correct the erosion problem. Pre upgrade they would be warp 3 ships. Once they got the new assemblies they could do warp 4 plus if they transferred power from their weapons. They were mainly defensive gunboats until replaced by the Franklin class after the Xindi War. These ships are sometimes confused with the Akula/ Akayazi classes which had a larger aft hull section for a larger engineering space and torpedo storage.

Ok, so here’s my head canon for the Enterprise era ships. The Warp Delta is the earliest of the three we see and was constructed before impulse engines became standard, hence why it has the rocket funnels in the intro, but also before transporter technology was in the pipeline. As a result it was designed to land on a planet for resupply, the Intrepid came about around the earliest development of transporter technology and may have had the first on installed on board. But it was limited in its application due to concerns and technical limitations, so the ship designers envisioned the ship mostly operating in space, but being able to enter the a planets upper atmosphere to be able to do personnel transfers and reliable resupply by the early shuttle pods which were unable to break orbit, hence the small fins on the the warp nacelles. And the then the NX class was the first to rely on transporters for fast mass resupply and shuttle pods had finally reached the point that they could reliably go from surface to deep space.

I love the Enterpise Era ships. Yes it does look thrown together but I think it adds to it's charm. Starfleet had antimatter tech and could go toe to toe with the Klingons if needed be, so they made these bulky little craft

if you assume that the first third, or quarter of the nacelle is dedicated to the bussard collectors, collecting hydrogen and other stellar matter you would be fine. When you get back to where the actual warp coils are located there's no longer any living space in direct line of sight between the nacelles, so no worries about getting 'fried'

To me the Intrepid looks kind of like they designed the Warp 3 or 4 engine, ended up having these huge nacelles, so they decided to build as little ship around that engine as possible to keep production cost down so they could have this as a fleet workhorse while the NX would end up as a more proper heavier but rarer flagship type class.

And maybe the fins are for stability in atmospheric flight...??? The Warp Delta ships have a natural "lifting body" shape...but this ship is slightly less aerodynamic than a brick.

People say that the registry is sequential but I think that only the second half of the number is sequential and the series in not, so if you do do a discussion (maybe live) on the registry numbers my theory is that the constitution is the 1700 series or just 17 the excelsior is the 2000 series or just 20 and so on, the number 00 gets the class name like 17"00" is the constitution and 20"00" is the excelsior and so on, after that the numbers go up from 01 to whatever, so my theory is that the first two numbers (or three) are the class and the rest are the ships individual ship's number, this would only be true for the initial run of ships, after that it could change like the miranda class is the 1800 series for the initial run of ships of that class but later when a new run of miranda's were ordered then they could change from the 1800 series to a different series number, anyway this is a personal opinion and not necessarily right but I think that it makes sens., In a way the enterprise has two registary numbers, the 17 (or 1700) and the 01

Picard is back but hes going to be in the Abrams' Kelvin Universe :( When JJ did a deal with Paramount, he had the rights to the Star Trek franchise but could not use anything from the Prime Universe, anything retro he uses has to be tweaked which was why he came up with the whole idea of the alternate timeline. Basically long story short, Paramount know most Trekkies HATE the Abramsverse, or 'Kelvin Timeline', but they still want to make more films and now they trying a new Tv series, so they had to get someone who they feel would win the fans over, this is why they asked Patrick Stewart if he would like to return.

One advantage of the rear fins: when maneuvering the ship, they allow for a reference point to avoid damaging more vital parts of the ship like the nacelles or saucer. If you are backing the ship into spacedock then if you clear the fins, you will clear the saucer. Maybe later, with advances in sensor technology, tractor beams and automation, you don't need a visual reference to help manually park the ship. Scraping an expendable bit of metal is far better than scraping a nacelle or getting hooked on the saucer.

I really dislike having the nacelles directly over the primary hull (the crews quarters). Not a ship I would want to be a member of the crew. Nacelles were originally designed to be placed away from the crew for safety sake. This completely ignores that reasoning and IMO, looks stupid to boot. If the nacelles were slid farther back at the connection point to the struts, it would look a whole lot better (again, IMO) As far as I'm concerned this is a class of starship that failed miserably and was probably dropped out of service quickly.
