6 years ago my wife and I decided to do the same thing you are about to embark on. I am now 65 and my wife is 64. We built the entire house ourselves from the footings to the roof. On a 31/2 acre property in a little Hamlet in Ontario Canada. We now live in the home we built and are enjoying the fruits of our labour.

What a beautiful piece of property! So happy for you two! My hubby and I bought our dream home in the mountains - already built, about about 12 years ago..... We had 5 1/2 acres in the mountains of California at 4,250 ft elevation. We had elk, as many as 18 at a time on our property. What beautiful majestic animals they are! We had lots of deer - mommies and their sweet babies that roamed our property. Bobcats that would walk on our 3 ft high stucco fence around the area of our patio, then stop for a drink out of our fountain. We would just sit there and talk to them - from a distance of course... Whole families of quail, as many as 20 or more, would come and drink and bathe in our 3 - tier fountain. We counted over 26 varieties of birds on the property feasting at our bird feeders, and drinking from the fountain. There were, occasional raccoons and skunks - Wheee - yuk ..., and pesky ground squirrels that like to dig everything up and chew up our patio furniture, rattlers, kings and gopher snakes. We had beautiful oaks and pine trees. We were up on a hill, 200 ft higher than our nearest neighbors who were 1/4 mile away. We could sit out on our front deck and watch the eagles soar while we ate breakfast, lunch or dinner out there overlooking the valley below. The only noise was the occasional flap of the magnificent wings of the eagles! I'm painting a picture of what is to come for you.... Everyday was like a concert in nature, never knowing what beautiful scene would take place each day. Sadly, we had to move back down to sea level after about 6 years as I was diagnosed with asthma and couldn't get enough oxygen up there. I cried when we went to pick up the check at the mortgage company after we sold our home. I was so sad to have to leave or peaceful paradise in nature... But, we made up our minds that we were going to be happy in our next home, and we are. Life is what you decide to make it be, right??? We have many beautiful pictures that my hubby took throughout the years of our home in nature's wonderland that now rotate on our computer screens. Just thankful for the beautiful memories, that are brought back through pictures now. Looking forward to reliving my mountain dream through the fun loving and amazing adventures of Allie and Trent on their beautiful new property!!! Love you guys and thanks for letting us live our dreams through you!!!

I love how great you both have gotten at building up the suspense. I thought you were going to say Allie was prego until you said you started this a year ago. Then I knew it had to be land. You both have such a way of making everyone feel like part of the family. Congrats again.
@judyholland75374 жыл бұрын
Please make note: Do not make it too tiny because once it is finished, you will invariably discover you will need an additional room. One of the most important things is to build an arctic entry so that you can isolate the cold and keep the rest of your house warm. This will give you a place for your coats and boots without tracking snow, mud, etc. through the house. I lived in Alaska for almost 20 years and the arctic entry will be a game changer for you all. Congratulation!!!!!!!!!
@KCallaAK4 жыл бұрын
Yep! Another Alaskan here. NEED an Artic entry for sure! :)
@roystevens43334 жыл бұрын
I'm almost positive they are building in Summit County, which has THE most strict building codes in the state of Utah. Unless they got a variance there are minimum size limitations set by both the county and the HOA, as well as construction limitations that insure the building can withstand the 100 year snow load (which I think is 20ft)
@StephanieJoRountree4 жыл бұрын
So true. I lived up in the north (midwest) and the closed off entry was essential.
@Elizabeth-rq1vi4 жыл бұрын
Roy Stevens ohh I hope there isn’t HOA up there.
@timskufca80394 жыл бұрын
YES! to arctic entries! Also, when building at that elevation, you cannot have too much insulation. The best system is to wrap the entire building envelope with at least 4" of rigid insulation PLUS fill the stud cavities with blown-in or batt insulation. Check out "outie" window technique on KZbin to get the concept. It seems like you have already contracted the foundation, but there are many directions to go as far as design, hopefully your architect presented all the options.

Hi guys, You might consider building a pad with an open walled pole barn that you could park terry under. RV's don't handle heavy snow loads well. This is an excellent suggestion. I am affirming this as someone who has done this very thing, in Oregon for a client, over a mobile home. It also helps with cooling costs in summer. I am also sharing as someone who designs Intentional Communities, Farms, Gardens, orchards, lakes/ponds, Landscapes (Irrigation, Lighting, Roads, Horse riding facilities, planting plans, etc.) and many swimming pools (have done about 70 on Maui past 1.5 years alone), and most anything outdoors. Based in San Diego but, work all over.........congrats for Allie & Trent on marriage and their new adventure!

what wonderful news!! I have been crazy over “Tiny Homes” for the longest time. The only advice I can offer is to not make it too tiny. The majority of tiny home builders when asked after living in their home for at least a year usually say they wish they had expanded their plans to add just a few hundred square feet. That’s not much complaining at all in my book. In building this mountain retreat, you are fulfilling the dreams of many of the viewers here I am certain. I know it has been my dream since I was 14 I’m now 59. This is really exciting news and I can’t wait to see how this will turn out for you both. May God Bless your Dreamscapes!!!

Investing in your future with family roots and a new home, especially a small one .I was pleased to see how your wedding had all the people who were important to you and not a lot of Costly trappings that are so disposable. I believe your travels have grounded your expectations in the most important aspects of life. I wish you enough! Some Words of Encouragement! In 1994 my home burnt to the ground and I was way under insured so there wasn't much money after paying off the mortgage. I spoke to several builders and I felt like they were taking advantage of me. I had been divorced about two years. I had two of them ask me out and still wanted way too much to build my house. Lol. So being just a little fed up with men in general, I sat one evening in the RV I had bought to live in on my small ranch while the house was being rebuilt. I had horses and dogs to take care of so I had to stay there plus it was my home and that's where I wanted to be. I began to think of what I wanted my new home to look like and got some paper and a pencil and began to draw it out. The basement was still there and that was a plus. The next day I went to a bookstore and got a book on building houses. My Quest had begun! I have three children that were all grown at the time, two had full time jobs and one was working and off to college in the fall full time. So I was on my own! I started buying tools and found a wonderful old gentleman that owned a lumberyard in a little town next to mine. He figured the lumber I would need off of my primitive hand drawn plans, gave me a price and I was off to the races so to speak. That was in July and oh boy it was hot. I did All of the work myself except the heating and cooling. I learned to do the wiring, plumbing, tile and even pored a patio. All learned from books! Only got shocked once! Believe me after that it didn't happen again! It was all dried in by the end of November. Sold my RV, I needed the money and moved into the house. It took me until spring to finish it. Did I happen to mention that I was fifty ( 50 ) years old? It was 2300 sq. ft. and was just the house I always wanted! Only one problem, I was out of money and didn't have any furniture. Haha But I had all of those tools and more knowledge about building things then I ever thought I would have. So I started building my furniture. As it turned out I was pretty good at it. I had friends that wanted me to build some pieces for them and before I knew it I had a little business going just by word of mouth. Took me two years to build a bedroom set I could keep for myself. Well This Big Long Story is just to tell you, how lucky you are to have each other to build your home. I don't know how many times I needed another pair of hands for something and had to improvise. At your age, you are young and that will be in your favor! Just keep the Faith and Know that you can do it! I don't know how many people told me I was crazy and that I couldn't do it. Sometimes I wonder if I made it through it just to prove them wrong! Lol I went to bed more nights than I can tell you so tired and hurt so bad, I couldn't sleep! So sorry this was such a long story! God Bless you both and Congratulations on your marriage! Happy Life To You Both!

@@maunalaniaina5749 Just don't put it off and think of who you leave it to and what would be the easiest way for them to receive it. I am being hit with these problems now is why I mention it. I am sort of in shock from this very problem so please don't think me too crazy , despite the name.

@@crazycloud2 Thanks for your encouragement. No I am not putting it off. Currently, I am selling items and property. I want to be on my land in the next couple months. If I have to live in a tent, game on. lol 😁 I have wanted to go back to living off the land for years. Now the opportunity has presented me with the chance. Since the time is now, I'm going for it. Never to late. Good luck to you too.

AWESOME!! Covid has made me also realize that it is important to have a home base...looking at several states. Funny, Utah is on the list....:) You will love living at 7 to 8000 feet. You'll get used to it. Lived at 7k in Glacier one summer...you feel really good once used to it...well I did at least. Good luck on this great new adventure!!
