Well how could they be the same if they believe two different things? A biblical Christian is the only kind of Christian that exists. There is no Christianity outside of the words that are written in the Bible. Therefore your claim of being a Christian rises or falls based on what is written. So. Do Catholics adhere to what is written in the Bible alone? Can you be a Christian by changing, adding or subtracting from the Bible? Can you take the DMV written exam, add a new section that wasn’t there, answer correctly according to the new portion, and pass the test? No. You don’t get to add. If there’s 20 questions and you decide to answer 18 of them, because that’s how you see it, did you complete the test? No ! But why? Because the state determines how the test is given. There are no popes, no sacraments, no Mary worship, no Christian kingdoms, no Christian conquest of other lands, no gay marriage approval, no colonialism, no ten Hail Mary’s and our fathers as a remedy for sin, anywhere in the Christian bible. But it is permitted and commanded in Catholicism. Which is different and not the same . Many Catholics agree! They say I’m Catholic not Christian. So there you go.

It comes down to authority (Which is something many other Catholic converts have said) for me. The same source I'm trusting for X is the saying that my position on Y and Z is wrong. I realized I was ultimately trusting The Catholic Church for a lot of the positions I held, but then I also came to realization that I should trust the Catholic Church on other issues. The same source I'm trusting The Gospels being Scripture is saying I'm wrong on the Deuterocanonical Books. The same source I'm trusting for The Trinity being the correct interpretation for God in Scriptures, is saying I'm wrong with how I'm interpreting scriptures, namely Sola Scriptura. Another "thing" for me was the thought: How can I believe that the Church "got it right" at the Council of Nicaea, but that same Church "got it wrong" at the Council of Trent?

I have a hard time believing Mike Winger's account of that Catholic priest at 49.00. After all the training a priest goes through and he's never questioned why he wants to be a priest? @jotunman6273 жыл бұрын
Priests must have a four-year university degree in philosophy plus an additional four to five years of graduate-level seminary formation in theology with a focus on Biblical research. A Master of Divinity is the most common degree. Before a priest is ever handed keys to a church, he must complete seven to nine years of postsecondary education and training - nearly as much as a physician. Only a fraction of Catholics are cut out for the life of a priest. St. John Vianney in Miami is Florida's only lower-level Catholic seminary, and employs a 15-part admissions process that makes university applications look like a piece of cake. Applicants not only must provide academic transcripts, but also sacramental records, an autobiography, medical information and letters of recommendation. Aspiring seminarians are subjected to background checks and psychological evaluations. The next stop for many aspiring priests is a major seminary, like St. Vincent de Paul, where they continue the four areas of formation: human, spiritual, academic and pastoral. Seminarians spend their summers working within their sponsoring diocese, but are assigned to a parish for one year to experience a full cycle of the church. That's where they can hone skills like public speaking, counseling parishioners and financial management. "They are really given the strength, wisdom and guidance to continue," "If God is calling a young man, He will give them the grace and strength they need." "All of us recognize a call to religious life, the priesthood, is a tough life. They are going to be sacrificing a lot." "We're only looking for strong men, the same type of strong men who make good husbands and fathers," Rev. Robert Garrity said. "You wouldn't want a brain surgeon to cut short his preparation time and study," said Monsignor David Toups, rector and president of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach. "We are working with something more important - people's souls."

For the most part 'Evangelicals' do believe in hell, we don't believe in purgatory. The new trend of 'progressive' Christians have some out there beliefs, but they do not represent the majority of Protestants. Just as theres a lot Protestant Christians dont know about Catholicism, there are also a lot of things Catholic Christians wrongly think Protestant Christians believe. As a Protestant married to a Catholic I am always wanting to learn more so i can understand both. I dont know everything about either, and am open to know more, to understand and love. I've seen to close, what pain and hurt this divide has caused (irish husband, northern irish conflict). I believe both sides needs to be better informed on the other. We have different practices and traditions, but what counts is who we follow..... Man or Jesus? Getting hung up on interpretation etc. has lost and ruined so many lives. I just want to follow Jesus' commands, love your god, and love your brother/enemy. If you do all the that automatically your fruit will be good! Just as not ALL Catholics believe the same not ALL Protestants believe the same. I agree SOME Protestants have wild beliefs, but a lot of what Catholics think we believe, we don't, and vise-versa.

But his problem is that he gets right to the edge of truth, and once he’s there and he sees that the Catholic Church is the truth, he just turns around and twists Scripture and history to fit what he believes. So what I’m saying is, there is no reason for him to NOT be Catholic already because he’s done the research and he’s had the truth staring him in the face. But he’s rejected it. He’s honest in his research, but he ignores the conclusions of that research. We must all pray for him.

In the story of the priest, the speaker puts an awful lot of words into the priest’s mouth. Where did the assumption come from that his parents decided he should be a priest and he did it out of obedience come from? Perhaps, the priest was just obedient to a calling from God and didn’t make a pro/con chart? Maybe he was inspired by a holy example? Maybe the priest was just startled by the question about himself as he had just been solemnly praying for the soul of a parishioner?

I am a Protestant although when I was baptized at 15, my life changed without comprehension, which made me believe that baptism is much more than a symbol, which my church and probably most churches teach. I could read my Bible easier. I found it easier to be kind to others. I found it easier to submit to my authorities (teachers and parents). One could say in general, I had a very transformative experience. And the only reason I got baptized is because my pastor asked the crowd if they wanted to be baptized. My best friend had taken a class on it and stood up across the room, and I had a strong prompt in my heart (probably by the Holy Spirit) to follow even though I would be embarrassed that my mom would post it on Facebook (which she did, and I got a lot of compliments from teachers the next day at school). In all, I was only baptized because my friend did it first. I had no real "salvation" experience that is described by many Protestants, no real moment that I put my faith in Jesus and asked for forgiveness (saying the Sinner's Prayer). I had said it several times when my pastor would say it at the end of Youth Group, but it was always "just in case I'm not already saved" because I really had no real assurance and I have no idea if it was genuine or not. The thing is, there is no knowing whether if saying the Sinner's Prayer is genuine or not because I often forgot about it the next day. But becoming baptized did really change me not only psychologically (because I didn't really care about it but only because my friend did it), but spiritually. So whenever I share the Gospel with friends at work, I tell them not to say the Sinner's Prayer with me, but to go home and pray, and to get baptized. Is it wrong to tell a person to get baptized if I have told them the full Gospel of Jesus? And is it wrong to be baptized before fully understanding the Gospel? Because I have gotten a bit of backlash from a Protestant friend for telling them to be baptized before fully repenting and putting faith in Christ as an emotional action.
@sillybearss4 жыл бұрын
Well, the entire gospel is too complex to be fully understood by any lay person, so I do not think that it should be a qualification for baptism. Perhaps at least understand the elementary and basic tenants of the faith. The growth in understanding and faith can continue after baptism. I do think though, that one should discern their call to the faith properly before jumping into it. At the end of the day, they'll have to make a significant leap of faith and say the big YES to Jesus. Keep seeking the truth, brother! Glad to know that you are baptised and believe in the power of Baptism!
@suigeneris26634 жыл бұрын
It takes learned theologians a lifetime of trying to fully comprehend the Gospel. Prior to baptism, it’s good for the person to know the basics of what’s going on if they can. Like you said, it is a very meaningful and (potentially) highly cathartic act. For children, the parents play a custodial role. God bless.

Im from the Philippines, Catholicism is Engraved in our Culture and hearts. to put it simply, we didn't need to go to a catholic school or study theology to love God and Jesus, the moment we were born our Parents brought us up that way and we end up following Christs footsteps naturally. We don't ask priests why they became priests, we just know and understand its in the nature to love and serve in the name of Jesus in our culture (you would also notice how hospitable and caring lay filipinos are). why do you love Jesus? After the Mass, the priest ask me, are you Catholic? I said no Father. Do you want to be re-baptize? And without even thinking twice, I said yes. But I grow into the faith, read the bible and just believe. I've encountered so many protestant brethren, all sorts along my journey but I held unto the faith and the Lord JC. (1) If you believe in the inerrancy of scripture, then Matthew @ clearly establishes the Primacy of Peter, which is difficult to dispute if one does an unbiased exegesis of the passage. (2) The Petros/Petra argument, used by some non-Catholics, has been summarily rejected not only by Catholic scholars but also Protestant Greek scholars Joseph Thayer and D.A. Carson, who have explained that in first century Koine Greek the words "petros" and "petra" meant the same thing: namely, "rock." In Koine Greek, small stone would have been written as lithos. Also, in Aramaic, the word "Kepha" is the word for rock and would have been used twice because there are no grammatical issues with gender regarding nouns. (3) If Christ did not hold Simon, his first disciple, in such high regard, then why does he change his name to Peter in the first place if not to build his church on a solid foundation -- "a rock"? In Matthew 10:2, Peter is the first apostle listed. Peter is present at the transfiguration, which obviously shows his importance among the disciples. Peter was singled out by Christ and elevated. (4) Peter is the disciple who declares that Jesus is the messiah, which leads to Jesus building his church upon Peter (Matthew @-20). It is obvious that as the leader of the disciples, he was the one who steps forward to proclaim Christ as the messiah, which leads to Christ conferring on Peter the keys to the kingdom and establishing him as the “foundation rock” of the church. (5) The early Church Fathers clearly understood Peter as the rock upon whom Christ build his Church (Tatian the Syrian, Tertullian, The Letter of Clement to James, and Origen) just to name a few. Therefore, it is clear that Christ singled out Peter from the beginning of his ministry, had him present at a key event The Transfiguration, and proclaimed him as the "rock" upon whom he would build his church after Peter declared who Jesus was, which all clearly establishes the Primacy of Peter, which was understood and promulgated by the early Church Fathers

I'm a Protestant looking into Catholicism, and I am very glad that there is such a concerned dialogue about our differences coming from Trent's channel. I have some difficulties with Catholicism's view of itself, but then I definitely feel... spiritual malnourished as a Protestant. I'll keep looking into it, and I have a strong feeling that through this process I'll end up learning more about the Bible and doctrines from both the Protestant and Catholic positions. Hopefully, in the end, God will take me to the correct doctrines. ...However... I do find that the homilies at the masses I have been to are not as robust as the sermons I am used to.They feel somewhat halfhearted? I'm not sure. Maybe it's just the two Catholic Churches I have been to.
@Jasper7872174 жыл бұрын
Here is some greater context for what is going on during that mass. If you look at Catechism of the Catholic Church 1346 / CCC 1346. You'll notice that there are two parts to the mass, which form "one single act of worship". There is a lot that happens in this single act. CCC 1349 "... the homily, which is an exhortation to accept this Word as what it truly is, the Word of God ..." So if, in part, by robust you mean length that could be why the homily isn't as long what a protestant would do at their service. Though for example Fr. Mark Goring does awesome work in a few minutes. Also depending on the occasion mass could go on much longer. But we have to remember some priests are just better at inspiring than other priests for whatever multitude of reasons, and some like to talk more than others. I once went to a parish where one priest said the mass 30 minutes faster than the other priests. I guess it's kind of like how some people get through a rosary in 20 minutes and others almost an hour or more, and some go through the rosary typically feeling "dry", while others go it feeling much more emotionally most of the time they do it.
@bridgefin3 жыл бұрын

BAPTISIM is in the CHAPTER ITSELF. One could be a PROTESTANT and deny a Catholic Truth by even adopting a Moslem definition of Baptism which they see as a "ritual washing" related to Ablutions, etc. "Purification" is mentioned in this Chapter and John's disciples arguing with the Jews on it, and then HE THAT COMETH TO THE LIGHT meaning the whole CHAPTER is about PURIFICATION and being PURE before God which is ESSENCE of being "Born Again" from the Water AND THE SPIRIT. WHOEVER DOES NOT FEAR THE LIGHT COMES TO THE LIGHT that his or her deeds may be exposed and indeed it is applied not our deeds being exposed by others in this life but more so when we all face God and of course one must accept the Son of God to be saved. Anyways there is a lot that can be said on just this chapter alone if only Protestants MEDIATED and PONDERED on these things. The Catholic Church is here to HELP readers of the Bible to CONNECT THE DOTS.

Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.", so I'm curious what it's like to believe that Paul was sent to preach yet did not hold baptism to be of primary concern, therefore by Catholic Doctrine, making his whole mission in vain? He didn't even know all of whom he baptized or if there were any more that he had missed because he clearly didn't hold it to be up to be a necessity to salvation, yet a Catholic is forced to concede that Paul is wrong here in his approach, which just makes you wrong LOL But I forgot, reading the scripture for yourself gets you burned at the stake, or at least that's what the RCC did for a very long time and wishes they still could do. Can only listen to what "The Church" says, got it. This is how you maintain false teachings, is too not allow anybody to investigate it for themselves, and it has worked wonders.

I don't truly understand how Trent around 57 to 58 say that the bible dosent clearly define what the gospel is? this is what the gospel is: " By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve." This is the Gospel and how it is defined! Therefore, the gospel can be found in the bible! Now, the proof of that faith is to all who apply and DO the command. Which says " to love God with all your heart, with all your mind and to love your neighbor has yourself" This also confirms what the Lord says in John 6. When they asked what we need to "work" in order to have this bread and Jesus plainly says: The work is to believe that the Father sent the Son! So to say that the NT dosent define what the Gospel is is just absolutely false!

@@user-wg5dm6oc3t that has nothing to do with what I said...Trent in the video stated that the gospel was not defined in scripture. I just demonstrated a place where it is defined. The only way we can say we are at peace with God is Christ being raised from the dead. Everything hinges on the risen Lord.
