How to get from Prague Airport to Prague city center? For this video I tried a brand new trolleybus line from Prague Airport to Prague city. This route is operated by high-capacity Škoda - Solaris trolleybuses.

According to legislation in the Czech Republic, a trolleybus is considered a railway vehicle, so it is not that far from trains 😀

Já už s nimi málem jel vloni, dokonce jsem jim ještě psal dotaz zda jde dokoupit vedlejší sedadlo, ale nakonec jsem raději zvolil lůžko přes Linz :-D

Thank you Pete for a very interesting video. It is worth stressing that Prague was the one big city in the Czech Republic which did not have trolleybuses! (I have never been to Prague, but I have used the excellent trolleybuses in Brno.) Also worth stressing is the very cheap fare, and the fact that the airport bus is fully integrated into the fare system used by the metro, trams and diesel buses. There is also an interesting similarity with the (much smaller) Swiss city of Basel. The airport bus 50 from the SBB station is a battery electric (no trolleys) double-articulated vehicle with a capacity of about 150. Most importantly, as with Prague 59, Basel 50 is fully integrated into the Basel city fare system.

Thanks for the comment :-) Prague had trolleybuses, but their operation ended in 1972. Prague started using trolleybuses after 2017 again, and several more lines are planned. I haven't been in Basel yet, I only have experience with transport in Geneva, where I tried also their trolleybuses :-)

a jinak máme uplně stejný zvuk motoru u nových trolejbusu os evidenčních číslech 638-658 a ústí nad labem má ještě obědnáno dalších asi 10 trolejbusu typu škoda 27trNU ze 33 provozních kusu ze škodovky :-)

Thanks so much for watching! Unfortunately, Prague still does not have a train connection from the airport, so this is the best option to get from the airport :-) But this partial trolleybus was quite interesting to me, that's why I made a video of it :-)

So what was the reasoning for not having the overhead extended to the end of the line at T1?

The airport did not want a catenary to the terminal 1, probably because a new runway is planned to be built in one section of the route

Čas 4:03, aparát po levé straně - zde lze také koupit jízdenka, jako nyní už ve všech vozidlech MHD (vyjma snad příměstských). Takže cedule, co jsou na letišti, nejsou už pravdivé. Samozřejmě možná dobře, že tam jsou - lepší tohle, než fronta turistů čekajících na lístky v našlapaném voze.

To byl záměr že jsem automat vynechal, většina diváků není znalá dopravy v Praze a je lepší je nasměrovat na to aby si koupili jízdenku před cestou, asi proto tuto možnost nezmínilo ani letiště na svém webu .. ve vozidle je jen jeden automat a ve špičce by to nebylo ani možně aby si všichni turisti stihli koupit jízdenku v autobuse

How late do these trollybuses run in the evenings? My flights into Prague usually arrive after eight. Also, do you have to pay an extra fee for baggage?

The last trolleybus from Terminal 1 departs at 23.31 (11.31 pm). This line 59 is part of the city transport, so there are no extra fees for luggage

One thing I really wonder is why Prague won't extend the trams going to Dědina station to the airport? The extension looks very natural and would run the same route as the trolley bus from terminal 3. Even with a new train line in the future it's still good to have an alternative way to get to the busiest airport in the country by public transportation...

This option was discussed, but it was said that the tram would be slower than the bus, because it would have to follow the same frequency of stops as the other trams running in this section (6 intermediate stops), the trolleybus then came out as faster (2 intermediate stops).

Hello. The info panel on the bus (trolleybus) shows the number of line 59 and the direction, which is also the final stop of the line. In the direction from the airport, there is the text "Nádraží Veleslavín" (or Nádr. Veleslavín), and in the direction to the airport (from Nádraží Veleslavín), there is the text "Letiště" (which is the final stop, but you get off at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2).

Zajímavé video. Skoro jsem doufal, že v něm bude natočeno i nahazování a shazování sběračů. Jezdím tím často a je vidět, jak řidiči získávají zručnost. Při sundávání sběračů to člověk už ani často nepozná.

Docela by mne zajímalo, jestli bylo opravdu potřeba pořizovat takhle kapacitní vozidla i s ohledem na ten "nával" ve videu :)

Ten “nával” byl výsledkem asi 4 hodin čekání na pro mne vhodný prázdný spoj v čase kdy bylo minimum příletů a asi 6 pokusů.. jinak minulý týden jsem tím jel odpoledne z letiště a lidi i stáli..

It is one of the options how to buy a ticket, but I deliberately did not mention the ticket machine in the bus, because for the expected audience of this video (tourists searching for an info about connection between the airport and the city of Prague) it is better to have a ticket purchased in advance.

In rush hour traffic, it can happen that there are two trolleybuses running close behind each other, and people boarging the first one, so the second one can then be empty (they run at intervals of 3-5 minutes)

Video moc hezký, povedlo se. Jen 5:25 taková drobná chyba, kterou teda dělá hodně lidí, a dopravní podnik Prahy na to již upozorňoval, na zastávce na znamení se nemačká tlačítko STOP, to se mačká v případě nouze, na zastávce na znamení se mačká tlačítko otevření dveří, samozřejmě v předstihu.

To je nesmysl. K udělení znamení, že potřebuji vystoupit se mohou použít obě tlačítka. Ani jedno není špatně.

Děkuji moc :-) Jinak co se týče tlačítek, vycházel jsem z informací Dopravního podniku ohledně změn zastávek na znamení platných od 29.6. "Před výstupem budete muset zmáčknout tlačítko STOP nebo tlačítko pro otevření dveří. Tlačítka pro výstup cestujících s kočárkem nebo na invalidním vozíku má stejnou funkci, ale měli by ho používat pouze zmínění."

​@@z00hno, i'm pretty sure solaris just provides the chassis but the motors and batteries for trolleybusses are made by different companies here in the czech republic it is Škoda that produces them, and since they have decades of history making trolleybuses they probably just kept the same naming scheme for marketing and familiarity on the customers' side. they have also collaborated with other companies like Irisbus/Iveco (look up Škoda 24Tr, 25Tr, 35Tr) and Sor (30Tr - 34Tr)

The exterior is Solaris and but internal parts - traction motors with batteries, BMS, cameras, controlling software - that's all Skoda. And it's a good combo. Solaris makes great vehicles and Skoda makes great electronic parts.
