@loudnsounds I mean, it wasn't out of the ordinary for the early field he more or less founded. It wasn't out of the ordinary, period. Not to be a Freud apologist, but coke was everywhere. In Coke, the soda, as well. Let's keep in mind, Freud was contemporary with phrenology, malaria therapy, hydrotherapy, chemically induced seizures, insulin shock therapy, and ideas à la Henry Cotton. It helps contextualize it, so Freud was bad- but many contemporaries were *significantly* worse.

Fun fact- the whole “unconsciousness” plot point began with Dante Alighieri. In the divine comedy, he’d often come upon things he really didn’t know how to describe, so he’d solve it by hitting the pov character (who was also his Bible fanfic self-insert, natch) over the head with a hammer and moving the plot forward while he wasn’t looking.

I like that Aeons says that dark/nasty topics shouldn't be "disallowed" in fiction, but you also shouldn't mislead your audience like this book is doing. Like, if I only looked at the cover and heard about it being erotica, I would think this was about a young woman who likes to tease guys/girls and has fun doing it (which is a super hot premise for an erotic book, erotic doesn't need to be super deep). Mary means "bitter" or "rebellion" in which obviously after what happens in the story to Mary...it makes sense. Priscilla is a name that was intended to make anyone who had the name have a longer & fulfilling life, in which Mary tries to empower herself through her alter ego Priscilla to fill in a void through her life. Note: Mary meaning "bitter" can be a symbol of Rival! Mary as her bitterness gives her drive to bring upon the downfall of MC! Mary (bitterness can also represent her murder in which justice for her is in vain), who is the symbol of rebellion (becoming a stripper, a hooker, & a basement dungeon sugar baby) but in the end, both meanings intertwine as bitterness eventually takes MC! Mary over. Rival! Mary was the side of the coin that on the table, but as it flipped eventually MC!Mary took both meanings
