Xanax has saved my life, multiple times. It’s the break glass in case of emergency - I go to therapy, sleep, see friends, have a job, exercise…but sometimes, you gotta hit the snooze button on the very dark thoughts. Half a pill, 20 mins, she says YOU BETTALAYLOW and the episode is over. Truly a gift. What’s scary is the number of bottles I’ve had that have expired because I get prescribed so much, but I don’t use most of them. So, there you go. Actual human need vs the pharmaceutical industry.

@supinedream

I read an interesting article recently where the brain waves of people reading and listening to an audiobook were measured, and all the same areas of activity lit up, showing almost no difference to the brain. The theory was that it’s because the person still had to imagine the story regardless of how it was input. I really enjoyed the article because they made the case that people who have reading comprehension issues, or vision impairment, or dyslexia, or any host of reading problems can still be literary, and it made me happy! So go forth and absorb all the literature you want, however you want, and don’t let the “book purists” scare you off or yuck your yum!
@supinedream
@supinedream Жыл бұрын
@@dayglowbimbo Exactly. It isn’t the physical book that creates the experience. It’s the imagination. And because of that, audiobooks can produce all the same benefits of reading. They help to build empathy and vocabulary, and a whole host of things in the same way reading does. So for everyone out there struggling with literacy, just know you have options, and don’t let anyone make you feel like less of a “reader”!
@supinedream
@supinedream 6 ай бұрын
@@agnespethes That’s so interesting! I can definitely see how the AI voice might be preferable. I know I’ve been annoyed many times by the actor’s interpretation in an audiobook! But I usually just tolerate it for the sake of a good story! It just goes to show how varied and wonderful the literary experience can be, no matter how you get your books 😊!
@MaxOakland

If it’s the same, People with reading comprehension issues would still have the same issues
@supinedream
@supinedream 5 ай бұрын
@@MaxOakland Nope. They don’t. Because it’s how their brains process the information. In fact, studies have shown that audiobooks can actually help people with reading comprehension issues to improve their reading skills. Plenty of academic research on the efficacy of audiobook support for literacy skills exists; audiobooks have long been considered an alternative way to access content, particularly for readers with physical and cognitive difficulties, but have the potential to support every reader in their reading journey.
@supinedream
@supinedream 5 ай бұрын
@@MaxOakland Research has shown that audiobooks can be incredibly effective for students with reading-based learning disabilities. The benefits of auditory learning can include things like increased comprehension. Listening to audiobooks can bridge the gap between decoding words and assigning meaning. Receiving information visually and audibly reinforces word recognition, improves fluency, builds vocabulary, and supports comprehension skills. Audiobooks can also help with better grades and academic performance. Audiobooks help students by allowing them to concentrate on the meaning of what they’re reading rather than trying to decode words on a page. Their listening comprehension may be more robust than their reading comprehension. Instead, listening to the text gives students access to content that’s above their current reading levels, making learning more efficient. They also help with higher confidence and improved self-esteem. Audiobooks can help ease tension and frustration, boost confidence and make reading much more enjoyable by allowing students to independently access the text and keep up with peers on content area reading. Also, audiobooks foster a sense of motivation. Audiobooks help kids learn to enjoy literature and build a diverse knowledge base. They are essential to open a magical world of stories so they can experience what it’s like to get lost in a good book, just like their peers. So for all of those out there with reading comprehension or reading-based learning disabilities, or any other literary challenges, whether they be physical or cognitive, don’t let anyone invalidate your journey! Ableism has no place in the literary world, or anywhere else for that matter! Both you and your literary journey are valid! Accessibility to art is essential for people to thrive, and is so easily expanded to include all of the arts, which is how art (literary, music, or otherwise) should be! Inclusive! Everyone should have the pleasure of experiencing the endeavors of creative people, no matter what their abilities might be. And I can’t imagine any artist, musician, writer etc. alive not wanting to have their work available to anyone and everyone with the desire to experience it.

Trixies talk on Xanax is so real. I was on it for 4 years. Never abused it, and always took it as prescribed. But it genuinely makes you feel like everything is good. I remember thinking all the time when I was on it, "this must be how normal people feel all the time." It was like my eyes were open, everything felt clearer and easier to process I constantly feared I'd end up becoming addicted or abusing it but thankfully I never did. I ended up switching to an anti depressant and haven't needed the Xanax in years But it truly is an incredible feeling of like clarity I could see how easier people become addicted because it's such a peaceful calm feeling

Forgive my ignorance, but if you have anxiety to this extent, why is it bad/scary/dangerous when a prescribed medication brings you out of the anxiety and into a mindset where everything is good? This is a genuine question because I always thought of depression/anxiety type "disorders" (apologies if that's the wrong term) happened when your brain has an imbalance of some hormone (?), and the medication helps to mimic or produce that missing element so that your depression/anxiety isn't negatively impacting your life. If Xanax does that for some, why is it concerning? Hopefully my question makes sense and isn't too stupid 😅 and appreciate any information

Chronic pain patient here - I can pay, out of pocket, for all the thc I want (which would be more than $300 per month at the very least) or I can pay a $3.25 co-pay for a tiny, tiny amount of pain meds. My pain is constantly under treated because of the opioid epidemic. First they over-prescribed and now the pendulum has swung the other way far too far. In order to take even the smallest amount of pain meds, I have to sign a pain contract that has all kinds of stipulations. If you make one mistake they kick you off. If insurance covered thc, I'd be all over that shit.

I understand the fear of medication that is also a common recreational drug, but if you suffer from anxiety or depression or adhd, your brain chemistry is literally different and therefore reacts to these medications differently than neurotypical individuals. For anyone, go with what feels right in addition to psychiatric recommendation. If these drugs really help you function and see the world in a more healthy or realistic way, give yourself a little leeway, especially if you have a psychiatrist you trust that you can consult. *Context: neuroscientist who also just got prescribed a similar life-changing kind of medication that caused similar anxieties* Sending love❤

Imo listening to an audiobook is not reading bc it automatically changes ones experience of the story by phrasing, voice, pacing, etc. To clarify, I still count listening to an audiobook as like a book a Goodreads but I don't think you are reading it - you are more experiencing it. Another example is a word for word graphic novel from a novel originally without pictures. The mere addition of pictures fundamentally changes the experience, so why wouldn't someone's voice change my perception of a story?

11:30 Good shout by Trixie. Everybody's situation is unique, but having watched benzos do their worst on a close family member, I feel pretty confident that in most cases it shouldn't be prescribed for general anxiety. Popping a xanax during a panic attack is one thing, but taking doses every day, multiple times a day is dangerous. There are other medications available that work well.

big agree from someone who was prescribed it and got addicted…. definitely not the case for everyone as i also have majorly addictive tendencies lmao but it is so serious and it’s prescribed so flippantly. almost a year clean though 😁

@@charsmith1804 I can't overstate how big of an accomplishment that is, I am so proud of you, but more importantly I hope you are proud of yourself. It's not enough to just detox from it, learning to live in the world again without the help of benzos is so difficult, and so many people don't make it. It's a huge achievement you've done.

Medication can be literally life-changing depending on the person. In my experience, Wellbutrin completely changed my perspective on life. I didn't know there was an easier way to live. I didn't know that I could feel consistently stable. I highly recommend anyone struggling with anxiety or depression to seek support. It doesn't have to be medication. You deserve to feel better and get the resources you need to manage each day. It can get so much better.

11:00 giiirrrrllll I was prescribed for a while years ago Xanax for the panic attacks and issues I was having. First time I took it and felt so soft and floaty and fuzzy and just laid down in a nest of pillows and vibed I was like "oooohhhh, this is why people get hooked.." So I sufficiently scared myself reading about getting clean off it and boy that kept me from taking em too often, no thank you.
