I Paid $120 for This Broken PS5 - But It Won't Update! When I try to update it I get error SU-101312-8 and it says "Something went wrong" on the screen. I also noticed that the eject button for the disc drive doesn't work so luckily that gives me somewhere to start.

@@RS_Redbaron coil whine, most likely. If it's a lower end set it's probably for the power supply to the LED backlighting. Turn your backlight level down and see if the whine goes away.

Imagine if the ac in your car stopped working and the car refused to start and the dealer told you,,well we havr to fix the ac before the car would work again. Not having a working disc drive is nuts....that leaves me with an idea..would it be possible to use the non-bluray drive software on thr blueray drive version thus bypassing the need for a drive thus no error on update...?

I have to thank you for the inspiration to start trying harder and harder fixes for electronics. I have now fixed 2 OG xboxes, a GBA Sp, and modded several consoles in the last couple months. I've had SU-101312-8 before after I had someone replace my HDMI cable. He/I accidentally knocked the cable loose from the drive to the board while putting it back together (one of us did...likely me, I have a way of breaking things without knowing I'm breaking things). It's basically just saying the drive isn't connected/not detected so either it's bad or just needs to be plugged in or either the ports or cables that connect to it are bad. As much as I don't want to touch any of my electronics from fear of breaking things further, I always like seeing these little videos with various issues that gives me an idea if I can fix something or not.

@@UltimateInkling (Fingers crossed) I've never encountered that issue, but that is less surprising as all PS4 models had a disc drive, so it being missing/inoperative/gone fishing thus causing update, or other general working issues doesn't surprise me. Because Sony.

Well done, and great find. I've got a PS4 that won't update. The only thing I can see wrong with it is the bluetooth antenna female connector came off the board, which I did not think would interrupt the ability to update, but I hadn't considered that the console does a full system check before updating. I'm gonna get that antenna fixed and maybe I'll have a spare PS4. Your knowledge is very helpful to amateurs like me, and it is greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work brother.

ps4 on v9 or older have a lot of opportunity for homebrew. If yours is on an older firmware don't update it. look into what other things you can tinker with it.

43 screws lol so you counted. It felt like 10000 last time I took my PS5 apart 🤣 i fixed it but got a new one anyways cause 2 other things were broke. I should mail it to you. My HDMI was fuzzy so that was bad probably and controller antenna broke. I fixed it drinking and tripped on it 🤣 the main issue was thermal paste needed respread. O and I replaced the fan. I did all that and the HDMI went fuzzy and I was like... Buying a new one 😂 but it still works. Got no case. Just a giant hunk of metal. Just needs HDMI and antenna replaced or fixed.

@@Syntappi The Series X has a replacable SSD where the PS5 SSD chips are soldered to the motherboard, making the replacement almost impossible for an unexperienced person and extremely expensive to do by a professional.

@@ekysboham yes, but it has encrypted security partition in it. If it breaks, your console is bricked forever 🤷🏻‍♂️ And you can’t clone one as spare because the key changes. Or you can but you need to install it immediately to the console. Consolefix has done mant videos about it.

Hey, been a big fan of your channel for years now! I have a PS4 pro that recently been having issues, the video goes out randomly and I have to manually shut it off or it just shuts off out of nowhere (no loud crazy fan hinting to any overheat) could be a power regulator or cap or something?

It is not because its checking if every subsystem is working or not but an upgrade will upgrade your system bios and drive and wifi module firmware as well. Same issue ps3 with blown wifi will be bricked (stuck in infinite update loop) when you start an update on it.

I love what you do steve! I bought a faulty PS5 which couldn‘t update some weeks ago for 170€ including a cotroller. Also was a disc drive issue, the drive wasn‘t connected at all as they probably lost this metal tab, also wasn‘t reading discs after fixing this issue, so i ordered a laser and replaced it . This has been my first PS5 repair and it had been sucessfull and this is now the console me and my kids are using :) Sure enough some days ago i bought another faulty PS5 (Digital edition this time) which is completely dead… let‘s see if i can fix this one too 😂 This repair thingy is kinda addictive 😅

Hey Steve, just to let you know it might be cheaper to make your own liquid metal- it consists of indium, gallium and tin, and there are a bunch of ratios that you could look for online. I made my own (100+grams) for 70$ total using a crucible from amazon and my hot air station. It could save a lot of money in the long term!

Why do none of these electronics repair channels use the attachment for the soldering iron that is a heated pair of tweezers. Works really well for taking off and putting on caps and such. Not only does it heat up both sides and the pads, but it holds it still at the same time. Freeing up the other hand for using a pick to hold the cap down as it cools and you remove the heat.

Anyone got a rough idea why my PS5 original randomly shuts off 5 minutes after of use. Sometimes I’m just in the menu and it does it. Then it will rebuild database. I will rebuild it myself as well and fix SSD storage as well as clear cache. Then it works for a month maybe days and no issues. Then one day it does it again. Shuts off out of nowhere. So I do all the data rebuilding again and clear cache etc. I cleaned out dust. Not a full 100 teardown clean but the basics really. Then I used a different power board as well no issues for a month then randomly one day shuts off again. Also there are times I turn it on and my M2 SSD I installed doesn’t appear. Been happening a few times since this shut off issue actually then I restart console and there it is. Working as normal. Also sometimes I turn it on and it does a quick rebuild on its own. It’s a 3 year console. I will mention also that my power boards are from roughly 2006 they are very old but still working with all my other attachments like TV, PC etc. So not sure if they are causing this issue for me.

Disc drive is faulty, Mine did the same. When it updates it also updates the disc drive, If the disc drive isnt working properly or not at all It will not update. Eventaully it will log you out and you cant log back in until it updates. Had to send mine back to Sony

Moral of the story.... someone fixed the HDMI port but damaged the ribbon cable. Those ribbon cable connectors can be tricky trying to figure out how to get the cable loose. You would think they would make them all the same way but nooo. Some clip in, some you have to push down, some slide back, some pop up, thats why its always good to watch a video on how its done. Its very easy to damage those.

Must be nice to have a what i assume is a big win (idk shipping cost to resell) offset some of the unrepairable losses. Liquid metal, as nice as it is, looks like such a pain to deal with.

It's funny how this "feature" of checking every component before updating and if doesn't pass it locks your system haven't changed since the PS3. Recently had to fix one with same issue because the Wi-fi/Bluetooth chip regulator went bad, the cause was the chip doesn't have a sleep state, so it stays on all the time while on Standby. I guess Sony didn't imagine costumers would let their PS3 consoles plugged in all the time.

Not that I have a clue but it seemed like there was a lot more liquid metal on there compared to others you have opened. Could they have potentially added more to account for the oxydisation without cleaning it off? If so, could it risk spilling out of the sponge with so much of it on the APU? Great video as always!
