You are exactly right brother, I would also replace with liquid tight to keep that from happening nice video

Thanks, definitely going back with liquid tight. Unit is just 2 yrs old too

I would never have suspected that BX would do that. You learn something new every day. Good work.

Yep, seen it quite often in older equipment. Didn’t really expect it on this newer unit . Thanks for watching!

Wonder if that was the cause originally. I don't remember if that wire nut was actually worn through on the last video. I know it was definitely worn but don't remember if there were actual arc marks or conductive parts showing on it (and too lazy to rewatch it). And of course, moving those wires around could have cleared that rub through on the wires. But good example of how experience plays a part in troubleshooting. Knowing to look at the wires inside that BX on something that is vibrating or moving. Good call on going right to that.

No doubt the wire rub through was happening for awhile, originally the short to ground wasn’t present after removing the motor lead cover where the wire connector rubbed through and arced. Thanks for watching again!

something is drawing some amps to pop a fuse cooked windings in the motor 2200 million ohms looks good
@subcoolHVAC9 ай бұрын
It was the direct short to ground on phase A. Motor is good. Thanks for commenting👍

Good catch, my megger would have caught that.

That’s what I thought too 👍

Nice. I thought there was a motor starter on there. Should’ve the overloads have tripped before the blown fuse?
@subcoolHVAC9 ай бұрын
Good question, the fuse blew on phase A as a result of the current spike when the path shorted to ground protecting the wire. Overload relay protects the motor in an over current / thermal condition, more delayed reaction. When the fuse opened it also stopped supplying volts to one primary side of control transformer resulting in control power loss stopping the starter at same time.

Great catch! What kind of air handler was it? Did it come from the factory in that or was it wired by electricians like that?
@subcoolHVAC9 ай бұрын
It’s a York, looks like it was field wired by electrician. Thanks for commenting

Curious why they don't connect the return air directly to the air handler?
@subcoolHVACАй бұрын
The air handler room is the return plenum, old design new units
