BRIEF BIO:
Height: 178cm / 5ft 10in
Weight: 80kg / 176lbs
I'm Tyson, I live in Australia and make functional training videos with my sense of humour violently shoved in.
My background is in Olympic weightlifting (2014 State Champion 85kg division) and Gymnastics Strength Training (Guinness World Record for Highest Standing Backflip and Accredited Gymnastics Coach).
The overriding value across my content is to place a high value on our bodies and their development by enjoying the process of learning new skills that increase its worth and enhance your experiences. I also guarantee you will say WTF (out loud) to at least ten videos on my channel.

I was in tumbling for years as a kid. I have always wanted to get back into it but they don't have adult tumbling/gymnastics classes where I'm from. I'm definitely not as in shape at 22 as I was when I was 10 or 11 but this was fun!

I'm 25 and have been in an adult gymnastics class for a few months. I've been stuck at a back bend kick over and don't have enough power for a front flip on the rod floor. Gonna get back to basics today ☺️ it'll be fun to not fail for a while lol

Tyson, this is the best intro to tumbling on the Web. I appreciate the fact that you put tumbling into its rightful context -- as fundamental human movement that has endless applications. I'm in my mid-thirties and I've dabbled in pretty much every kind of fitness approach, from long-distance endurance to CrossFit to outdoor sports; hands down, tumbling (and basic gymnastics) has yielded the largest return on my quality of life, my athleticism, and my overall enjoyment of training. Tumbling will remain my focus for years to come, if not the rest of my life. Thank you so much for providing such a great foundation of information and context for us adults to get started!

I'm trying to go back to basics and relearn how to tumble. It is discouraging sometimes how much harder it is when it used to be so effortless. I can still cartwheel, handstand, and do back handsprings on the track. Not able to do much else though but I hope that I can get back into the shape I was in 5 years ago. I just hope it's still possible, I'm 29.

Thanks, I don't tumble but this definitely helps with tricking and freerunning. I was wondering if you knew any drills I could do to increase my twisting speed for fulls and dubs ?
@TysonE
@TysonE 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yeah a good one is bouncing off your back on a trampoline (as in learning to bounce off of your back). Once you can bounce from your back you work in a 360 rotation so you go BOUNCE FROM BACK > 360 SPIN (then 720 etc) > LAND ON BACK. It takes some practice to develop the aerial awareness to stay on axis and twist but it's a great one for practicing twisting without going upside down.

I get a lot from your videos Tyson, particularly this one and now use all these movements in my training. I really struggle with the roundoff (seen your good video) though and not quite worked out why. Maybe it's because I started it at 64 years. 66 now and really want to connect RO with BHS and back salto. Always looking for new ideas on this. Look fwd to more ofvyour content.
@TysonE
@TysonE Жыл бұрын
Hey Peter! Thanks for the kind words :) Round off, let alone the back handspring and back tuck are quite advanced skills given the context here. It takes a lot of practice, staying healthy and understanding what adjustments to make. Sounds like you'd benefit from some practice on a long tramp or airtrack but that is just a general assumption as I don't know your training BG at all. Good luck with it! I'm going to do another version of this vid so keep a look out!

Hey Tyson; love the video. Im wanting to start beginners adult gymnastics once restrictions end. I can so these drill while i wait for classes to open. Q: im 40, low body fat; toned; do yoga occasionally; but have a few old injuries like; a sprained ankle form 10 years ago; torn miniscus from 2 years ago; and an old wrist overuse strain. Do think because of these injuries I should forget about doing tumble; or if Im careful, do you think I can do tumble and manage the injuries? Im guessing you’re not a medical professional; so just after your anecdotal opinion. Thanks from Melbourne!!!!!
@TysonE
@TysonE 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely wouldn't forget about it. I think if you're careful and incorporate mobility work (yoga should help to) or tight/problem areas you'll have a great time. Think of the saying "your eyes were bigger than your stomach" when someone eats more than they should have and now they're sick. Apply that logic to training where you don't want to push yourself over the edge (for example, don't go for front flips and back tucks before you could do this workout with control). Aim for incremental improvements whilst managing the bigger picture (health of the body) and you should have a great time.

Tyson, with the cartwheel, try to push your legs to the ceiling and the lower back and straight legs will come. Also, back rolls should have your hands turned in and arms straight, which allows for the push up through handstand (landing in front support) and to handstand. 🙂
