I'm watching these videos carefully with a specific piece of wood in mind that begs to be a goblet. This video is going to help me a lot. Thanks so much.

Very good Mike! This format is good for the new turner as well as a good refresher for more experienced turners. Not too much to try and digest at one time. Great idea you had! Take care, Dave

Hi Mike. On a recent trip to Southwest Oregon I picked up a nice little pice of myrtle wood. I just turned it round. Hoping it becomes a Giblet. It will be a little short but I have to work with what I have. Your video is perfect timing for me. THANKS!

Well done Mike. My biggest frustration with KZbin turnes is the details they leave out. For a new turner, it's very frustrating. I love all your videos. You are a natural teacher. My one suggestion is that you let us know your lathe speed. For the newbie, this is always a mystery, though we know that it becomes somewhat instinctive. And maybe show the sharpening. It seems trivial to an experience turner, but a new turner with no one to show him or her the steps, it's just another question (I'm always concerned that I'm wasting three or four months of steel). I look forward to a long winter of absorbing your videos. Cheers!

Thanks Ron ... I actually state the lathe speed on several occasions 🙂. Also I have several in depth sharpening videos on my channel. Thanks as always for watching.

Mike, I like this format. As I get older I find my attention span becomes shorter. This video was just about right. I love the commentary. Your voice is very pleasing and your descriptions are very good. Keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing. Remember, when the wood goes around, the face shield comes down.🙂🙂

Lessons from the goblet master himself! I’ve never turned a goblet but I’ll definitely give it a go after watching this series. Thank you Mike. I see you’ve added an ultimate edge to your setup, I hope it’ll get the limelight in any future livestreams like the pro edge did😂

I keep telling myself that I will learn that Richard Raffen upside down/backwards hollowing cut he does.... Some day. As for NRSs (negative rake scrapers), I have a whole bunch of them. With green wood, I can get a finish cut that 400 grit abrasives seem to rough up rather than smooth out.
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 7 ай бұрын
I've tried that method Reed, with some success ... but a lot more practice needed to be able to use it on film. I must say I really do like negative rake scrapers a lot. No news on the sharpening platform I suppose 😔

No news on the platform. Unfortunately. I have been practicing that Raffen cut, and keep the tool by the down side, so more normal position. I did find out that I need to use a bigger gouge for it, and a recent hint from Richard was to make sure the nose comes out of the wood before you start that peeling cut. I did get a bunch of blanks from D Way, which are M42. I finally settled on a 60/30 grind. Some one else commented that they need a certain amount of bevel under the burr for it to cut longer. I settled on that one a long time ago.

I have a question for everyone. Mike has 95K+ subscribers, then why so few viewers and even fewer comments? I notice this is the pattern with most of the You Tuber's videos. For myself, if I don't watch I unsubscribe.
