Wizzy actually has the second strongest popoff in melee which is why he has such a good matchup against hbox, the number 1 spot in popoffs. The crowds anticipation on who will pop off can actually confuse h box and cause him to stagger.

Wizzy’s my favorite player. He just incorporates so much 64 stuff in his play. Avoid getting hit, hold center stage more, knows exactly went to let the knee rip across the stage, etc. He has insane defense, incredible neutral, and a bonkers punish game

its so hard as someone who doesn't play but loves melee to see those intricacies, and walt did an amazing job at outlining them. But never in my viewership of melee would I think they consider Salt closer to wizzy in terms of defense. None and S2J seem like much slower players, so it seems more calculated. But I cant process these micro adjustments that make her a safer player when she is moving at the speed of light.

You should see some of the mods you can do to animelee through m-ex in case you don't know of it. I have a pretty cool custom iso with like 25 versions of each stage on shuffle, skins of Cloud, Alucard, and Sasuke for marth, HD stocks and shields, etc. Check out David Kimball's stuff here if you're interested in learning how to make your own "perfect iso" like I did (or just downloading his build, which is basically just a better version of vanilla animelee).

I'd love to see a video on Smash N' Splash 5. Wizzy didn't just win Melee Falcon's first major in a decade and a half, he also reached Top 8 in the Ultimate bracket, notably knocking off Leffen (basically the only Melee/Ultimate dual threat until Hbox got good at Ultimate) and TWEEK (1st seed in that bracket and arguably #2 in the world at that time). It remains one of the most impressive cross-platform performances in the history of the franchise.

I think Wizzys uncharacteristic adaptations to "cooler" play shows how "optimal" is really quite subjective to any given moment, melee is not as flow chart bound as these last few years have led us to believe.

Captain Falcon was designed after Samus. All of the bonus fighters were modeled after base-game characters: puff was based on kirby, Luigi based on Mario, and Ness was based on Pikachu.

@renfrifan1232 it's an interview with HAL laboratories that I read decades ago, but can't find anymore; even if I could remember the source, the site probably doesn't exist anymore. But the jist of it was that the core fighters were the more recognizable Nintendo characters (Mario, DK, Samus, Link, Pika, etc), and so they were made first. Everything else in the development, from the bonus characters to the game's single-player features (like Break The Targets), was on an "if we have time for it" basis. There was a lot of stuff that they didn't have time to complete before release (like the Home Run Record mode, which wasn't finished until melee).

It turns out that all the characters were based off Mario, with each character being designated to a designer who then modified him into the characters we know from the cast today.
