In this video I get to sit back and watch my girls do the work as calves are reorganised to make life easier, we also turn a few random bits of scrap steel into useful things. Hope you enjoy

Seeing the girls helping out takes me back to when I was a lad helping my father in his workshop and building a wrought iron fence in our garden come rain hail or shine. That same fence is still standing after 66 years but someone else occupies our old house. A nice tidy workshop Adrian now if you could only build a bracket to hang up that old tractor you'd have tons of floor space. Prolonged bad weather affects us all, more so those who work outdoors and who rely on the land for a living. As a former soldier, my thoughts are also with the Ukrainian soldiers who are living and fighting in trenches with little or no shelter. I think social media can have a positive effect on farmers who use it because they are able to communicate with one another and share experiences. A common bond, a bit like soldiers comradeship. Looking out for each other. Your positive attitude will go a long way to lift the spirits of many farmers. Praying for better weather on the horizon.

The weather is certainly very testing this year. I'm luckier than some, I've got some slurry out, but some fields now won't get any until after the first cut because there's too much grass. I also got some fert on silage and some dairy cow grazing land and there's plenty of grass but too wet to turn them out. Our young stock grazing land is far too wet so haven't gone near that land, and now starting to run low on straw but got plenty of silage. Just watch, it will even out and the next thing will be a drought! On a better note, your calves are looking fantastic 👌

Great video Adrian, lovely to see the Girls working away quite happily. Your work ethic is amazing, it helps my husband and I to be much more positive. The weather here in the south lake's is the worst we have had in a very long time. We have horses 🐎 that like to winter out, but it's very challenging. We put our electric fence posts in a round plastic dustbin I got from the hardware store. I have used the round lid for cutting circles into the lawn for flower beds, and I've cut half circles on the edge of a lawn to plant Lavender, it's looking lovely, but ive made a lot of hard work for myself 😢😅. All the best to yourself and the Ladies in your beautiful family. ❤

for the pig tails i just used a metal dustbin with a metal plate in the bottom, then wheels welded to it, we use around 400 of them during summer for the park open days... you really should get a small hobby lathe and make some stuff yourself instead of buying new.

For that yoke with the calves getting through, do you think some thick plastic sheet with some strong magnets on. Easy to get on and off. It would depend on what the headlock is made from though.

If we are to believe the theories of Maslow, the highest thing on his hierarchical needs of a person is that of achievement. So, what you suggest is in alignment with what he said and quite frankly, just good old common sense that I think most, if not all, can relate to. As you show, it doesn't have to be something big or grand, but something simple like tidying up a shed, room or even just a desk. It's simple and good medicine. There is an old saying too that warns us of the dangers of not doing anything. 'Idle hands, idle mind'. If we don't keep ourselves busy, we allow our minds to run riot and that is often never a good thing.

Great advice Adrian, keep busy and do some little jobs you may have been putting off, it all helps. This weather has been relentless, I am not a farmer but I have worked in agriculture in the past and I can see the problems you are all having, it really is something that the majority of people will not understand. My wife has horses and we have some chickens on a 5 acre field we purchased a couple of years ago. The lane up to it is now impassable (unless you have a big tractor) we are having trouble getting hay up the field and there is no way the farrier or vet can get up there. It is all a worry but nothing compared to the farmers who depend on the land for their income. Keep safe, keep busy and dryer days will come, sooner rather than later, fingers crossed. Paul from the Isle of Man.🌞☀😎

I live in a major agricultural area of our province. Although I do not farm, I have become quite aware of the day by day life of farming and what Mother Nature dishes out at anytime of the year and how it affects the growing season. It has become brutal at times. So, when you speak of issues that are happening all over, we must take a moment to be thankful for what we do have and also be sensitive to what happens to a farmer during these times. Never take things for granted. and hopefully keep a smile in your heart.

Adrian, I look at life this way, every day I wake it's a plus and after that everything else is a bonus. Even if it is something simple like smiling at someone and getting a smile back. And all those little achievements go on the plus side on the ledger, ready for the times when things don't go so right. I know it's difficult for you, but for your ledger, just remember the smiles on your girls faces when they're moving calves, not all the riches in the world can pay for that. 👍

Quick question, do you add all your heifer calves I to your milking herd and just slowly expand year by year?
@IFarmWeFarm5 ай бұрын
We replace older cows with the heifers, not increasing the herd. It keeps the herd young. If we have a surplus of heifers in a particular year then we would sell a few of those too. The older cows sold on normally go to milk a few more years on another farm nearby
