"Coffee? She didn't even say what kind." In American diners you get coffee one way, black and out of a pot. It could've been made five minutes ago, that one was probably made an hour or two prior, depending on how many people bought coffee before the movie. There is usually a jar of sugar and powdered creamer you can dump in if you want to lighten or sweeten but yeah the 90s weren't a time for fancy coffee. In fact cappuccino machines costed several hundreds and required a physics degree to understand 😂

I always find it odd that I can walk into Starbucks or some other similar place where the younger generations think the are serving coffee, I ask what they have from East Africa, Costa Rica, or Hawaii (all beans that a real coffee house would have) and they look at me like I'm the one that's crazy.

Not just the visuals, but the sound effects were also incredible in the movie theater. There is CG, but as you saw they also mixed it with practical effects which is also why it is so great. In the Midwest in this 90s era, particularly at a diner, an order for plain (black) drip coffee is the norm. You would just get “coffee” or maybe “decaf coffee” and then add the extras like sugar or creamer yourself. There is no espresso, lattes, etc.

I think the fact that they left the dog Toby behind in the beginning is just to help show how panicked the parents are. They don't want to leave the dog behind, but they might have seconds to get their daughter and themselves into the shelter. If the dog isn't going to follow, we're not going to worry about that. But once they make it to the shelter, the family is as safe as they can possibly be, we'll worry about the dog. Luckily the dog followed, and they were able to get Toby inside with them.

So I lived in Kansas on the edge of Tornado Alley from age 3 to 11 and this movie is practically mandatory viewing for people who love there to learn about what to do and what not to do. While I thankfully never got close to a tornado I did experience storms that did almost as much damage. And yet I still love this movie. It truly captures the horror and the thrill of storm chasing. And nowadays some chasers actually build their own ARMORED VEHICLES to not just chase storms but to get purposely in their way, drop down some anchors, and have tornadoes run over them while pointing cameras and other meteorological equipment up the funnel. There was a show on Discovery channel over 10 years ago called Storm Chasers where 2 groups of chasers with their own armored vehicles did just that. One with an IMAX camera.
@maingun073 ай бұрын
I'm a Kansas boy too. Maybe 20 years back one of those armored vehicles was outside the local diner. One of the storm chasers gave me a tour. I don't know squat about tornadoes, but I'd spent 6 years as an armored vehicle crewman in the military. I tried to give this fella some advice on how to secure things, how to increase protection, how to prevent spalling, etc. This young fella just gave me a polite smile and said "Thank you." Translation, "We know what we're doin', pops." I walked away like Hooper on the pier in "Jaws" after trying to tell those guys that they're overloading the boat. I just shook my head thinking they're all gonna croak. I never saw that documentary. Maybe I should look it up, see if I recognize that armored truck. I remember when the last F5 (before they went to the Enhanced Fujita scale) ripped through Greensburg, KS. I watched it unfold live on TV. I felt completely helpless. I remember throwing a bunch of tools in the back of my truck, waiting for my girlfriend to talk me out of going down there. She didn't because she wanted to go too. I was all packed and was filling my thermos with coffee when I stopped to think. The sheriff wouldn't know me from Adam and I ain't a part of any rescue or relief team. If I went down there, I'd just get in the way. In the end, my girlfriend and I just held each other that night and cried.

I live in "Tornado Alley", I have been through an EF4 an EF5 and several smaller ones. Daytime you get somewhere high and watch the clouds to see if anything is forming. At night, especially if it is raining, you listen to the weather stations or go into the storm shelter to sleep or just go to sleep. The nightmare is a night time, rain wrapped, mile wide EF5. Those are exceedingly rare. The problem with this one is it came out in the "disaster movie decade" and the only natural disaster that didn't wipe out humanity was an outbreak of "herpes simplex 10".

The first that I can remember was when I was four and we went to my great grandmother’s house to go down into her cellar. The worst was when I was in my twenties. The tornado touched down about a mile south of us and still managed to rip up half of our fence and slam it into the back of our house. And fun fact, the actress who plays Melissa, Jami Gertz, was on a sitcom in the early 2000s. The show was called Still Standing, and she played a character named Judy who was married to a man named Bill (surprise). He was played by Mark Addy, yes THAT Mark Addy. at a diner like that, there are two kinds of coffee. Coffee and decaf. If you want late or something you would need to go elsewhere :) There you will get black coffee and some packets of powdered cream and sugar that you can add yourself.

I can't even begin to explain to you how fantastic this was to listen to in the theaters. Movies around this time were really breaking in to some new technologies with picture and sound. Amazing time to be a teen

For what was ostensively a showcase of the CGI available at the time, not only do the effects largely hold up, but the jokes still land, and the campy charm is timeless.

As a Nebraskan...growing up with somewhat regular tornado watches and warnings, you don't really experience much fear most of the time. If the weather is right a lot of people stand outside (the clouds are amazing) and keep an eye out for if one will touch down nearby. In the event one does touch down nearby... then there's a little bit more urgency

We were in one that went over Lake McConaughey in the 70s. It just happened that the next day was Father's, and my dad looked to see if the boat was ok. All he could see was the top of the windshield out of the water. The engine broke off and went under the boat, which had about 400 pounds of sand in it. The motor was never right again.

Ive been through several tornadoes. Probably about 4 or 5 that were within a very close distance. I was living in North Alabama when there were over 2 or 3 hundred tornadoes that touched down that day, it was absolutely insane. I was at work and the power went down, and our boss made us wait an hour to see if it came back on before he sent us home. Luckily we all made it back home okay, but it was a very close call. I was driving with my mother in rhe car when a tornado went literally right next to us. It was raining heavily, lightning everywhere and it was pitch black dark outside. I thought mom was gonna have a heart attack, so I calmed her down, and pulled into a safe place until it passed us by. But we were getting blown all over the road for about 5 minutes until we parked. We were definitely lucky

Great reaction. I was a USAF meteorologist when Twister came out. We shut down our weather squadron to watch this movie. I was in Texas when an F5 tornado hit Jarrell, Texas, in 1997. It was a MONSTER! They found cows that were killed by thousands of pieces of straw! It peeled up sod and asphalt and scrubbed some housing units completely off the face of the earth. There was nothing left. Look it up. There's been a few tornados that the man who created the destruction scale, Fujita, wanted to call F6s, but the weather community decided not to because the F5 terminology already included total devastation. I will definitely be watching more of your reactions. Thanks for the fun.

Im from Dallas, Texas. You get used to the tornado warnings. Ive only had a direct hit once in 1986, but it was a small (F-2) tornado and only pulled up part of the roof. I was 9. Ive lived in tornado alley my entire life (im 47) and you dont even think about them unless the warning comes up.

Shortly after this movie came out, Doppler Radar allowed scientists to better predict and measure tornadic weather systems. It has led to far better predictive models and warning times.

They added an "s" to " Twister" so the sequel is " Twisters". Living in Tornado Alley and experiencing a few twisters you just heed the warnings and watch the skies. Watched my barn blow away coming in from the harvest.

I live in Ohio USA. When I was 17, I saw a Tornado form in the sky when I got off the school bus at my house. It was one of the scariest things I ever saw. It swirled around but never hit the ground and slowly disappeared. I ran to the bathroom of my house just to be safe. We were fine, but it reminds me to be thankful for what we have. It could all shortly be gone... Also, my dad is a successful plumber for many years. He always said the scene near the end was BS because the pipe would stay in the ground if it was about 20+ feet down but the belt would snap after a few seconds... Thanks for all you do.

I try not to be too hard on this film. The concept of chasing tornados and the decent effects give it a undeserved pass. @19:14 that 'hail' looks like someone beat up a bag of ICE and scattered it on the road for example. It's not large enough to become 'irregular'. I went to see it because of Van Halen and I'll end there.

Yeah, there are some aspects they tried to make true to life, but other stuff is just movie silliness. Even IF those straps had held, they would have been sand-blasted by debris and it would have been near impossible to survive that.

Released on mother's day weekend 1996 and it was phenomenonal. The next film for director Jan De Bont after SPEED (1994). Loved the story and characters with so much going on (tragedy, excitement, fear) in every moment. The action pieces that involve facing the storms are so good. The award-winning special effects are too good to look this real. Too realistic because it has to be. But the intensity of recording and documenting such things is fascinating. Stormchasing was in much higher demand than usual. Everybody was into how twisters worked and wanted to be part of that world. This was the No.2 film of 1996 and the first-ever film on DVD. The soundtrack was dope with contributions by Van Halen (Humans Being) and Respect The Wind by Mark Mancina feat. Eddie & Alex Van Halen. I've been on the Twister ride at Universal Studios Florida simply called TWISTER:Ride It Out. RIP to Bill Paxton (Bill) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Dusty).

Steve, in the ones you were driving, did the clouds go from grey to green? I was on the highway when the warning came over the car radio and about the same time the clouds changed to this really strange almost glowing, green color. Lucky, I had just passed the spot ware the tornado was going to cross the road so i put the hammer down and got out of there.

The thing with twisters is if you just pay attention to the weather you can have some warning. A day or two or three out they will say conditions for a tornado on such and such a day is more likely and in this broad area. You keep a radio or the TV on the day of, know where the nearest storm shelter is, and have everyone know what to do if the alarms go off. Often there are like air raid sirens that sound when it's time to get to shelter. So unlike earthquakes or wild fires, you get some warning and can have a safe place ready before hand. Also unlike many other national disasters, the area a twister affects are more limited. Oh, and there's a popular KZbin channel, Ryan Hall, that does weather forecasting. When there are big twister outbreaks he'll do 3, 4, 5 hour + live streams giving up to the second news on potential danger spots. A lot of people rely on him when things get nasty. He also runs a kind of charity where they quickly go to areas damaged by tornadoes to help people who have lost their homes.
