every time this song comes on my playlist I just sit back, close my eyes, and imagine a trip through the universe, speeding by planets, coming to a black hole, passing comets, and stars, and just fading into the blackness of space.

Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence. It's a 9 minute thrash instrumental inspired by the movie A Clockwork Orange, at the time the band recorded the song they were still teenagers, the drummer Andy was just 14. There was a lot of legal issues with copyright, royalties and minors going on tour etc. so the band was kind of left behind when other Bay Area thrash bands like Metallica started getting bigger. They finally released their debut album in 1987 around 2 years after recording it when one of the members was old enough to legally represent the band in contract negotiations.

Loved your reaction ladies. I like the way the song builds up with different sections and the fade out at the end as though it was still continuing. I was lucky to see Metallica live with Cliff in September 1986 just a week before his tragic loss and this track really showcases his unique style. Another recommended instrumental selection is the call of kthulu from ride the lightning.

I don’t know Metallica that well so this is the first time I’ve heard this. Really, really liked that middle section, the one that starts with the bass, terrific guitar melodies and rhythms in there. And I never knew they did instrumentals; so thanks to your Dad for this one and I’m glad you gals liked it as much as I did.

You kids are so fun to watch! You know what harmonies are! I have to tell you, though it's probably mentioned already [and it definitely bears repeating], not only is the spooky intro all bass guitar, the final lead in the mellow middle part - plus harmonies - is also all bass guitar. Know why? The bassist, Cliff Burton, composed and arranged this track. He was one of the best and coolest bassists of all time, and many [including myself] regard this as one of the best and coolest metal tracks of all time!
