I retired from the commercial maritime world a decade ago and began doing relief stints and deliveries as a Chief Engineer on these big yachts. I signed NDAs to do this line of work, and I won’t violate them at this time, but just let me say this. You cannot be exposed to this space without questioning global economics, obscene wealth, and how it was obtained. It absolutely makes your head swim, and you become very cynical. Let me give an example. On an ocean going tug, as an engineer, I would be lucky to have an assistant engineer,but usually a deckhand who might keep an eye on things while I sleep. On one of the support vessels for a fleet of large super yachts, I had a 1st and 2nd Ass’t Engineer, 2 oilers, an ETO, 2 day workers, a rental car, a credit card and $6000 monthly in petty cash. All this in addition to my rather high day rate. There was never any engineering issue that money and/or more money could not resolve.
@idanceforpennies2812 жыл бұрын
I know quite a bit about the marine world, and the thing that makes me shake my head is the massive crew numbers on most of these superyachts. How the hell a 1000 Te vessel needs a crew of 27 (actually outnumbering the passengers) is utterly beyond me - such immense waste.

@@idanceforpennies281 Money laundering is expensive is the short answer. The long answer: the rule of thumb is 20% to 30% of the initial amount of laundered money goes to middlemen, to make it clean. With economies of scale and a good (bad) reputation, that might go to 5%. Why do Russians overpay for Trump properties that they never live in? Same reason. Just do the math: if Putin is worth $300B, as Forbes says he is (at the minimum, some say Putin is worth a cool trillion) and a rule of thumb is your assets should yield 5% a year (minimum) then that's $15B a year that has to be laundered. 5% of that is $750M in laundering fees a year. And that's just Putin. All the other oligarchs probably have at least as much as Putin, collectively. That's what greases the wheels of commerce in the yacht industry. And the above is the "wholesale" rate. Lesser oligarchs probably have to pay 10% to 30% cut. Possibly why the rare coins, rare artwork and diamond markets have not collapsed...demand for such high-value, easy to smuggle items. PS--on occasion you get a drug bust on a yacht, but I imagine this is small potatoes stuff by low-level people. Smuggling drugs in the south part of Spain is for wannabe gangsters...nothing Putin and his lads would soil their hands with.

That actually makes primates more advanced, from a cultural and societal standpoint than humans. It also reminds me of the bit Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where man thinks we're so advanced because we've created all this technology and industry, and mainly use it as more effective ways to wage war on each other. On the other hand, we regard dolphins as not very advanced because all they do is play and do tricks for fish treats. Meanwhile, the dolphins regard humans as not very advanced for the same reasons... Using technology and industry to exert more pain and suffering (or in the OPs point yachts of the wealthy having their own pet yachts while people are hungry, homeless or denied medical care). In the end of course, the dolphins are the more advanced species because they realize the impending doom headed towards earth and leave beforehand. As advanced beings, they try to convey the danger to the backwards humans before leaving, but the humans misinterpreted the message as just more silly playing and tricks.

I can't put the right figure to it but it's not only British government and people that have been benefitting from him but all the countries in which the yatch and aircrafts are built. Just think of the multiplier effects of his investment and you will see the folly of UK govts' sanctions of the good man of Chelsea. I'm not aware of your own brother billionaire being good for the masses "on the streets" without a hidden agenda to further impoverish the world for their gains. It comes to reason, with multiple super yachts and support yachts, that these people are not anti-capitalism, they just don't want the Russian people at large to have free market capitalism.

Yachts and aircrafts owned by the " oligarchs" were unknown to the common man until u-tubers started to "tantalise" us. It's not the billionaire's faults; if you didn't dig into them, we won't have known. I don't exactly know how the billionaires are to blame for buying the products your companies manufacture and your governments tax very heavily. The Abramovich kind of billionaire is pure and simple. There's no need to seize their investment and properties as long as they are not manufacturing illegal drugs, war arms and ammunition, as long as they are not sponsoring coups and overthrow of governments as British politicians do, as long as they are not rogue politicians pretending to be heads of governments like Biden, Putin, Johnson etc. You know as I do that the real rogues who should be sanctioned are not the Abramovich-type billionaires but the politicians who are war mongers, who are manufacturing arms for wars, who are bent on destroying the world with their viruses, diseases, vaccines, drugs and toppling of 3rd world countries' governments. Let's do a little research and we'll be surprised at the corruptability of our PMs, presidents and so-called parliamentarians. Have we come out of problems created by the Chinese Communist party, democratic party with the help of Wuhan lab guys and Dr Fauci? Most our world still grapples with their virus and now their brother, Putin, from the 18th century has come up with his inordinate ambition to be the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES OF EUROPE. Let's know our enemies.. the politicians in Europe, Americas, Asia and even their stooges in Africa. If you have what the billionaires need, haggle well your prices; you may not be fool forever. Veronica, not real name, had the kind of body that one billionaire liked and they struck a deal. Today, she's a billionaire because she used what she had to get what she needed; it's a double coincidence of needs. Do you remember the Kennedys in US, the Aristotles, the Gates etc? Were the Russians? What righteous noises did you ever make against them? We do know that only oligarchs win elections all over our dirty world, especially in Europe and the US. What have we done about Biden's activities in Ukraine and China? And tell me, what do you think Johnson is gaining in the shuttles to the Arab world? You better leave Abramovich alone and see the ways you can remove the billionaires stooges in your countries' governments.

Quite grotesque how some people can afford multiple super yachts when billions are living in abject poverty. Most of the billionaires (not just Russian) who can afford these things have obtained their wealth through immoral means.

Great Britain, due to massive socialism costs, was going BK, 'Until' they declared OFF shore earnings, tax exempt. Aside from rendering JK Rowling the wealthiest woman in GB. (aside from royalty) It encouraged oligarchs from all nations, to reside (and spend) in London. How long will it take for GB (and other pandering countries) now to realize they have Killed the golden Goose?

Just had a thought. They could be worse, think Epstein or the infamous Microsoft founder. Would rather a dickhead oligarch who merely ‘bought’ a state company for a pittance through western backed loans in the 90’s. Come to think of it, how did Pelosi (and her son) and Romney (pre politics) make their money? Let alone Packer who was mentioned briefly in the story.

Arresting a boat is by like a boot on a car, it still belongs to the owner - who is footing the upkeep bills. To actually confiscate a yacht you have to prove it’s use in criminal enterprise in court, or that it’s paid for with proceeds from same. (They are, but no judgements are awarded or warrants issued to seize them).
@csjrogerson23772 жыл бұрын
Then you have a command system, displays from sensors and a control system so that you can identify targets and then you have to indicate the target to the missile so that it knows where the target is. Not as easy as you thought.

Same thing he does with the jets. He'll take one of the big ones (I'm assuming he mainly uses the 787 now) and will be followed with the small one(g650 now). Once he gets near where he wants to, he jumps on the smaller one. That's how he travelled to aspen and, when in london, he'd land in Luto and then take the chopper to the london heliport near the stadium.

@mattrobson36032 жыл бұрын
The only way Russia rebuilds a better system is if the West puts an enormous amount of resources in. They need a Marshall Plan for after the Ukraine War, essentially. And with Russia moving closer to China, I think that Western people and their leaders will be even less inclined to spend money on Russia than they would be otherwise.
