I went to P.T. for trochanteric bursitis. They had me do stretching exercises and I was unable to walk the following day. I will avoid stretching & concentrate on strengthening.

Good plan! Try to avoid clams but instead try gluteal exercises like bridges or sliders or isometrics as these often work better! Hope that is helpful!

Thanks for your comments! If you do not have bursitis or gluteal tendinopathy this exercise is perfectly safe and fine to do. However, if you have greater trochanteric pain syndrome, trochanteric bursitis or gluteal tendinopathy this exercise can make your pain significantly worse. It won't hurt at the time but will be painful afterwards, there are many other exercises that work very well, just this is not one of them :)- have a great day.

Everyone tries this stretch and it never works :( and can actually make it worse in the long run!

Terrible that every physical therapist has given me these stretch exercises for my hip bursitis. Still in horrible pain and using a cane after a year's diagnosis.

I am so sorry to hear that. Yes all of the latest research shares that stretches do NOT help and you need a specific strength program to help restore tendon strength and health. We have some free examples on our youtube otherwise more info can be found here and I hope that helps you! synergyphysio.teachable.com/p/hip-pain-relief-bursitis

Err, I am not sure what to believe. This is the first video recommending NOT doing that figure 4 stretch, whereas there are dozens of other professionals that DO recommended it. E.g. Bob and Brad, in kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpKahZmsf7ShaKM. How does stretching your IT band not help with hip bursitis?

HI Vlad! Often with trochanteric bursitis there is concurrent gluteal tendinopathy which is very often missed on ultrasound scan but can be picked up more readily on MRI. Gluteal tendinopathy is a weakened tendon attaching near the bursa and should not be stretched. More recent research does not support stretching at all in the presence of tendinopathy. Instead a strengthening program is recommended and all of the most up to date physio research has now moved toward using prescribed strength program in the presence of lateral hip pain. I hope this helps! Kind Regards Niky
