This is the most comprehensive Do It Yourself How to Jeep Wrangler JK front Spicer Ultimate Dana 44 axle installation video on the entire internet!
So buckle up for a longer video but that's because it has lots of data.
I'll cover the basics on why I chose the Ultimate Dana44 for the front of the AutoEdits Jeep.
spicerparts.com/parts/axle/au...
Then I'll go through some of the other components like the Reid Racing knuckles... reidracing.biz/jk001
Plus, there's a pretty good side by side comparison for those who think the stock Rubicon Dana 44 axle and the Ultimate 44 are exactly the same... because there are some very important differences exactly where I need them!
After that, it's install time and I'll take a few minutes to explain how to measure and get your axle and suspension setup dialed.
I even show the hard parts of doing a big upgrade to your rig and how to push through... removing broken bolts... dealing with the dreaded death wobble after getting a professional alignment and doing an eyeball alignment in the garage and taking it for a drive.
Here is a good resource for torque specs... there are plenty of other spots but this is a good start: www.extremeterrain.com/jeep-w...
Thanks so much for watching!
Please hit subscribe and give me a follow over on the instagram / autoedits_jason

I loved this video. Totally makes sense why you went with the axle you did...Sometimes we jeepers rush to install the biggest, beefiest parts we can find without considering what the other implications are - I hope people watch this and realize that a one ton axle isn’t always the appropriate option! 😀🤙🏻

You are the best! I absolutely love that our Jeeps were very similar for a moment in time and have taken different "trails" over the last few years! What you've accomplished as a driver/mechanic/storyteller is beyond amazing... keep it up Hollie!

I had my first bout with death wobble the other day, I thought my entire front suspension fell apart on me. Scary as hell! It's a 94 XJ, not a daily driver but I take it on the streets a bunch.. I put a beefier tie rod on so I got an alignment, I had been driving it on the hwy a lot with no problems, then I hit a pot hole at around 40mph that caused the DW. I've had the Jeep for two years, thought I was in the clear, guess not lol
@GentleGiantFan
@GentleGiantFan 3 жыл бұрын
I've had plenty of experience with DW. It's like driving on square wheels. Always scary as hell the first time you experience it, but what's funny is the looks on the passengers' faces the first time they experience it LOL!

Probably already mentioned, you can also use the string method for ballpark alignment- I always used it with my quads. Wrap a sting around the jeep at the tires center point. If the alignment is off you will have a gap between tire and string, adjust until the stringi is flat against all four tires it should be good to drive it to alignment professional.

First-time commentor. I was happy to see your video on the same axle had installed after an accident damaged my Dana 30 (blessing in disguise). Unfortunately, the shop initially installed my track bar in the wrong hole causing death wobble. I was just super happy I was able to triage the issue and fix it. I've always loved the DIY stuff, that's why I subbed. I also generally prefer longer videos if it remains interesting/informative all the way through, which this was! I see a general tactic used by youtubers is to cut it into parts, then you can increase your ad revenue a bit as well. I'd be fine with this being 2 parts if you were thinking about it*

Thanks dude! I did have to swap the pinion flange from my stock axle but... yeah woody's is the way for me as well. What 60 are you going with? Spicer doesn't make a semi float 60 rear (yet) and it is important to me to keep my wheels and brakes. That's just too much money to do axles and then get brakes and new fancy wheels.

Wow a eye ball element. That's impressive. My way is with a string. The string goes around all the tires, the back tires are the straight point, I adjust the element in the front till the tires in the front are evenly touching the string. Good enough for a dirt rig and good enough for a on off road rig to drive safely to get a real alignment done.

Good description and comparison Jason. As for the high pinion front Dana 44, its more than merely to keep front driveline angles more shallow, more importantly it places the pinion on the driven side of the ring gear which makes for a stronger assembly. I also couldn’t justify the added weight of going with one-ton axles for my driving style in my 6.2 liter LS powered 2011 JKUR. Mike

I put a Tera44 under my Jeep a couple months ago. I anxiously took it for a drive after the install and got death wobble at 40 mph. Immediate disappointment! Feels great to have the peace of mind of a stronger axle.

I've always used the two men and a tape measure method for front end alignment. My LJ likes 0° of toe. It would be nice if dana made one of these for my LJ. Currie and dynatrac are my only real choices

Swapped in the UD44 in my JK X this spring. 1,000% agree best bang for the buck. It really is as easy you show it to be. Cut the bracket off for the steering stabilizer and use the TF bolt that doubles as the track bar bolt and you can use a stock style steering stabilizer 🙂 I've also had as good luck with the DIY alignment as the 'pro' shop... Pretty sure the diff cover bolt is 30in-lb...

Nice upgrade Jason! I just did the same axle swap on my wife's Jeep after her front axle was bent in an accident. I was in the same boat, there are beefier upgrades, but it didn't fit her style of wheeling. The UD44 was a good fit. Solid axle for sure!

So...you must have kept the 4.10 gearing? Obviously if you were in 4x4 out on the trail. I'm curious why you didn't bump to 4.88s or 5.13s since it sounds like you are doing the rear axle as well?
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits 3 жыл бұрын
I'm swapped to 4.88 years ago and just ordered this axle with the same to match the rear for now. I don't think I'm going larger than 38" tires but you never know.

I’m leaning toward the Pro Rock 44 pro with the pumpkin pointing up higher toward the transfer case. Gives better steering feel when lifted over 4”. Not to mention that the PR44 has a 1/2” thick tubing vs Ultimate Dana’s 1/4”.

Had the same wobble after rebuilding the steering, forced me to go in for an alignment lol! Was pretty scary, only took a little bump and would not stop until I came to about a complete stop. Had a neighbor say “you get all this work done, then it’s time for A new jeep “. I said no, I would replace the engine or transmission or rebuild one or both.

Death Wobble Alignment help and DW fix. 4 Years ago I bought a stock 2013 CG JK 2D and installed an AEV 3.5 Dualsport RS SC lift with 18" Fuel Rims and BFG Ko2 35x12.50 r18 tires and it ran great until it didn't. Early last year the dreaded Death Wobble. By this time it had 85K on it so I figured something was worn and it was. The track bar bushings were shot and the ball joints were heavily worn. So I replaced them and then I started chasing the dreaded intermittent DW problems. Number One: Never trust alignment shops. They go by the book and if your Jeep is not stock anymore the book does not work. During the process of elimination I ended up installing the full SteerSmarts setup which greatly improved my steering tightness to better than stock but still intermittent DW and to make the story short I ended up replacing just about everything connected to my front end including new bearing hubs, u-joints and control arms and still the DW at random. At least they were things I wanted to do anyways :) Then I started noticing a slight cupping on the outer edge of my tires. But the shop says dead on! So I found this article and repeated it exactly. and guess what. my Death Wobble went away. wranglertjforum.com/threads/how-to-align-your-jeep-wrangler-tj.85/ You got lucky with your eye alignment but I played with mine adjusting and driving: repeat. first off. The alignment shops alignment was almost a 1/2 inch off according to my new sticks and tapes and the stick length is crucial. If you have 37" tires then you need 37" sticks perfectly centered on the hub for measuring. If you look at the diameter of a circle. The bigger the circle, the different the measurement is going to be with two adjacent circles measuring the length of the radius endpoint difference between them. (I hope that made since) I ended up going with 3/16 tow in in the end on mine. Yours may vary. Different tires track different ways and may offset your needed tow. Trial and Error is the only way to fix this. Another thing I found is tire pressure. Running my K02's at 30psi instead of the tireshop 36psi also greatly improved ride and steering. I off road but in the city I drive fast. 80 on the HW fast in the corners and with all these upgrades it now handles better than stock now. Another thing to look at is pinion angle and scrub radius. If you are using wheel spacers or after market rims without the correct offset. you have increased your scrub radius. From Pirate 4x4 below. The ROOT cause of death wobble is high scrub radius. Scrub is caused by improper backspacing of the wheels. Changing your caster, camber, toe, ball joints, rod ends, tire balance, etc. will cover it up and change the harmonics to a different speed. The proper way to eliminate death wobble is to correct your scrub. If you draw an imaginary line through both of your ball joints (looking from the front), the line should come about 1 inch below the center of the tire. The distance between the center of the tire and this line is your scrub. Anything over 1 inch can cause death wobble. There is a good video here on YT. 6 min long with pretty pictures. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYanfniaZseAkKs&ab_channel=EngineeringExplained Your Castor angle is also important. If your Jeep has too little caster angle, it can be a candidate for developing death wobble. you can adjust this with your Lower Control Arms and it should be about 6 degrees (best) on the Jeep. Having less or ZERO castor will also cause DW Hope this helps

Dana 44 front is totally fine for a jk on 37s as long as you sleeve the tubes and c gusset reinforce. The rear 44 keeps bending the axle flanges causing annoying issues. So a full float rear is preferred.
