Have only run into that one time in 26 years. It was the result of an oversight by a young installation crew who at least knew there was an issue when the system was started and called for backup help from the service dept.

Good job keeping the industry honest Mike. This happened with us a while ago, idk how but my boss got a new condenser coil and compressor under warranty and then got a new 410A evaporator coil. We pressure tested and flushed the lines so that way we minimized the total for the customer.

Ran into the same thing last month. Reason for call, repeated refrigerant leaks (7psi remaining) on recently installed 4 ton 410a condenser. Installer refused to answers or return calls any longer. Found the leak. To make a long story short, installed 410 txv - coil rated at 500 psi test pressure (never seen a physically larger 4 ton coil, it was huge). Evacuated, charged. SC/SH were spot on. All good so far.

I know I’m two hours away but out of love for your biggest fan please consider doing this job for me I can maintain it locally after the install so it would be one and done. Boiler from Supplyhouse is back ordered until Sept so it’s not an emergency but you are the man and I want you! I cannot find someone that I’m confident in out here in PA.

When I worked apt maint we used to put in new 410a condensers and use the same r22 piston evap..we flushed it out real good. We cut the liquid line and close the suction king valve...now we put the flush into the system. Then hook up nitrogen and blow out through suction valve and it goes out the liquid line...so all is good. It cools great. We dont even change the piston..its Goodman and it works!!!

I’ve seen it one time and it was old furnace and coil in basement and new condenser outside, I recommended they call the installing contractor back as it was only installed for a couple weeks but they had me replace the coil, filter drier and I removed the refrigerant and charged with new, that was 10-15 years ago as far as I know it’s still working, but that being a 5 ton system I bet your going to have ductwork issues too!

Mikey has a new fan and subscriber! Instead of rewiring everything look at Honeywell/Resideo’s Redlink set up. A 240vac to 24vac transformer added inside the condenser to power the ERM (Equipment Remote Module), the battery powered Redlink version of the Vision Pro 8000, the EIM (Equipment Interface Module) mounted at the air handler and that’s the only wiring needed. The thermostat and ERM talk to the EIM wirelessly to turn on the air handler and condensing unit, and if the homeowner wants wifi access then add the Redlink Internet Gateway. You can also add wireless indoor sensors to help balance out hot and cold spots in the house and an outdoor sensor if needed. We use it frequently where I work because although it can appear to be more expensive up front than pulling wire, when factoring in that the customer doesn’t need to repair sheet rock, paint, dealing with another contractor to make those repairs, etc… in many cases it’s actually cheaper. If they have the heat connected to RH and the cooling to Rc then you could still connect RH and W in the new thermostat to control heating and the thermostat would control cooling wirelessly, or put another ERM at the boiler so the same thermostat controls heating and cooling wirelessly I’ve had customers have me put the thermostat at the equipment instead of in the living space and install indoor sensors throughout the home. Then I disabled the temp sensor in the thermostat so only the remote sensors actually control the temp and the thermostat is just the human interface to set everything up and turn the equipment on and off. And no, I don’t work for Honeywell/Resideo, but I have taken a tour of their facility and labs here in town and talked to the engineers

Can you articulate why mixing trace MO with POE is a bad thing? Because I can’t think of one reason.
@joneidbo
@joneidbo Жыл бұрын
@@drodriguez394 some say you should not mix, many say it does not matter. One tech said they did hundreds of units with out flushing or replacing evaps and hand no problem. looked it up on a HVAC tech site. . Just replace the metering device, and explain that they most likely did not clean the mineral oil out of evap and lineset and that may cause issues, only time will tell. @10:30 she asks the question that gets him fumbling for an explanation. but good on Mikey for not editing it out and showing how he does the explaining for a complete system replacement. The fact is Mikey does not know if and how much oil was left in, and what damage that may cause. To push a whole system replacement is making stacks from hacks.
@drodriguez394
@drodriguez394 Жыл бұрын
@@joneidbo it’s not a bad thing. Look at any retrofit guide from r22 which likely uses mineral oil to 407c which is only miscible to POE. The guid tells you to mix 20% of the oil. Or change the oil. . And we know you aren’t flushing out the compressor with a pipe wiper !

The installer of the Bryant unit would not come back after several attempts to fix problem units evaporator coil would freeze up. I was referred by a friend of hers. I so happen to have a 4ton expansion valve in truck changed valve and filter drier got it back on works great. With the r-22valve pressures were 80 suction and 450 head after repair 118 suction and 360 head pressure . That was 4 years ago. Went by about month ago clogged condensate drain checked pressures working good this lady didn’t have very much money that’s why I did what I did. But yes I would have changed The Whole system. He had two other companies come out and they tried adding refrigerant but did not know why it wasn’t cooling. Yea found 2 1/2 ton evap coil with R22 Txv and a 3 ton r410a condenser and a lineset that goes from 7/8” to 3/4” to 5/8”. I told him I would recommend replace the complete a/c system . He only wanted to do the evap and he wanted to get it and have me install. I told him I’m not interested.

The customer is always right. She's only staying there 4 more years. The other issue is that condenser doesn't have enough air to breathe -- two sides covered that would never fly here even with the proper metering device. The way I view this is: It is broken now. I lay it all out give choices it's not my decision to make. I am there to fix it. Even if all they could do is replace that TXV & fix the short. If it breaks again the only thing they get a break on for a year is that TXV. It breaks again whether it's 30 days or 2 years doesn't matter to me. I like to replace, but I like to repair just as much or more. Because if you can fix it for a time? That is a much bigger market. At some point, those will also lead to replacements. Right or wrong in terms of methods? Your climate is much less severe, so if I were in your climate I might think differently. Here in Katy, Texas I see nice pretty installed units by builders and others that don't work worth a dime. They only know to install, not to fix. I don't want to be known as an equipment pusher that can't fix anything. Certainly there is a fine line to that. You can also argue if you touch it you bought it. But that is only because you lack the skills and verbage to fill out the invoice for what is covered and what isn't. All HVAC companies that I know of will recharge a unit (most of them) even when we all know refrigerant isn't covered by any warranty period.

early in video, I wonder if it's ever R410a, because they could have jammed in some R22 replacement gas blend instead. yes, the warranty is instantly voided, but it "would" work if sized and charged right, it may even last a long time before failure if there's no leaks! no I don't recommend doing things like that, but there's people who do it all the time, complete with tail-light warranty. 🙃

just a question i know the system is hacked but can you recover the system and change the txv to 410a and juice it back up or is that too much invested in that system?

Doubtful, if the evap coil is only designed for R22 then the design pressures are much lower than the operating pressures for 410A. Some coils are compatible with both but not all, and that evap coil was never replaced so I'd be surprised if it's rated for both 410A and R22.

hope Chris is doing better. i miss his humor. whitees for breakfast, classic. lmao. another example of a cheap homeowner. cheap is not always cheap. i do not tlike them and charge a "premium" when they hire me. wonder if she has paperwork from the "previous" company she used? i suspect the answer is no. I would have told her,....i ll change the air handler only, and only with the understanding that i can not give you any warranty. zero, on the whole system, zero. I give my customers a 5 year warranty, bumper to bumper on any new installs. with the condition that they can prove yearly maintenance. I give them 7 year bumper to bumper if i do the yearly service. i stand behind my work, just like the DOCTOR.....great video, sweet dog.

Wow. Crazy prices. Reminds me of a buddy whose A/C went out on a hot Sunday night, after just having a baby... Paid over $600 for the most expensive outfit in town to come and replace the capacitor on the outdoor unit. But it sounds like you'd charge $400 for that even during standard business hours.

It's expensive? You're paying a premium for a technician to come out, after hours, on a Sunday. Pulling him away from his family and his own life for immediate service. And a single call basically pulls half your day for a technician. As for the $400. Depending on your area that can be just fine. There is a mountain more to a repair than the cost of the part.

Hourly fee for the Doctor in LI NY....for an honest, reliable, and knowledgable HVAC professional is reasonable. He also has a two man team. Many companies use a one man truck to save money. Doctor does not cut corners. Emergency service is usually triple hourly rate. That is normal. Holiday plus emergency rate, now we are talking! as long as the customer knows. It is their stack!

Those are the prices you pay for a professional in a high $ are to fix stuff. I am a mechanic by trade and DIY on just about everything from my cars to my house. Throwing in a cap for $20 or an igniter on my own system keeps $ in my pocket. Heck, I even did a swap out on my house 6-7 years ago on the central air. Those that lack the skillset pay for the professionals $$$

In fact, Honeywell’s retrofit guid for r22 to 407c requires you either change the mineral oil to poe since 407c, like 410a is only miscible with POE. You flushing the compressor out? I don’t think so. Another option they offer is to add 20% of Poe to the existing mineral oil for miscibility purposes. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MIXING OILS. not dangerous.
