Have you ever asked yourself this question?! Why do we see a pattern of discrimination, suppression, and prejudice against black Africans right from the beginning of time up till this day? What's the made-up hostility the white European and Arabs felt toward black Africans? Well, the history of discrimination against black Africans is a complex and troubling one. It is a pattern that has persisted for centuries, and even in the modern era, we continue to see evidence of prejudice and suppression directed towards people of African descent. To understand this, we must look back to the earliest days of human civilization. Black Africans were among the first peoples to develop complex societies, with rich cultures, advanced technologies, and sophisticated systems of governance. They were the architects of great cities, the pioneers of agriculture and trade, and the creators of art and literature that still resonate today. This early dominance of black Africans was a source of envy and resentment for other groups, particularly the Whites and the Arabs. They felt threatened by the power and prosperity of black Africans, and so they began to create a narrative that portrayed them as inferior and backward. This narrative was built on a variety of factors, including the physical features of black Africans. Their dark complexion, plump lips, and woolly hair were all used as evidence of their supposed inferiority. These physical traits were twisted and distorted to create a caricature of the black African as a primitive, uncivilized creature. This false narrative became deeply ingrained in the minds of many people, and it has persisted for centuries, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Despite the fact that black Africans have made countless contributions to human civilization, and continue to do so today, they are still often viewed through the lens of this historical prejudice. Colonial powers when they came to Africa didn’t waste any time in portraying an insidious form of this oppression that black Africans are uncivilized and barbaric. This idea was perpetuated as a means of justifying their exploitation of African resources and people. They argued that they were bringing civilization and progress to an otherwise backwards and primitive people. This narrative was used to justify slavery, forced labor, and the subjugation of African societies. But the truth is that African societies were far from uncivilized. They had their own rich cultural traditions, sophisticated systems of governance, and technologies with examples portrayed through the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Ethiopia, and Mali. These were some of the most advanced and prosperous societies in the world. But these achievements were downplayed or ignored by colonial powers in order to further their own interests. Today, the legacy of this narrative further persists in the way non-blacks view black Africans. Despite the progress that has been made in terms of civil rights and equality, many non-blacks still see black Africans as a threat. This is evident in the way black people are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement, denied job opportunities, and subjected to racist attitudes and behaviors. At this point, the question on your mind must be “But why does this prejudice persist?” Well, there are many reasons, but our video will be a deep dive into a handful of the most notorious ones.
