The books of Islamic history are replete with stories of 'right-hand possessions', and the Quran as well references them. This topic has become one of the most controversial & hot topics of discussion which Islamophobes and other critics of Islam love to misinterpret.
The Islamic concept of Riqq has almost nothing to do the Western pre-modern manifestation of slavery. To equate the two is simply ignorance.
In this video clip Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi addresses the controversial topic of 'Riqq' and 'Right-Hand Possessions'.

And she shall take off the clothes in which she was captured and shall remain in your house and lament her father and her mother a full month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. But if you no longer delight in her, you shall let her go where she wants. In 2016, a scholar at Egypt's al-Azhar, the most prestigious Islamic school in the Sunni world, stated that non-Muslim women could be captured in a time of war become "property" and can be raped "in order to humiliate them." A 12-year-old girl taken captive by the Islamic State explained that her 'master' would pray before he raped her: "He told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to Allah." Other sex slaves have been forced to pray before the rape or recite passages from the Quran during. When a Yazidi woman begged a caliphate member not to rape a little girl, he responded, "She's a slave... and having sex with her pleases God." In 2017, African slaves were freed from captivity in Libya, where their Arab masters not only raped and starved them, but forced them to drink from toilets. Groups like CAIR, which pretend to be concerned with "human rights," never lifted a finger to help them. A Quran memorization competition in 2015 offered slave girls as the top three prizes. Again, there were no voices of Muslim protest from elsewhere. As Uzy Bulut keenly observed, "A religion that encourages destructive rioting and killing over cartoons, but shows no sign of sorrow as little girls are sold and raped, does not have much to contribute to advancing civilization.” Although Western or European countries have committed such inhuman acts, atleast they never hide their black history. In fact, the topic of Western and European slavery is taught in their schools so that future generations can learn so that their history does not repeat itself. The Muslim world to this day does not want to admit and has never apologized for their actions.

@@sowhat9637 The sentence means "Those Possessed by your right hand", now it may or may not metaphorically bear the meaning of "responsibility you are entrusted with" but that still is counted as someone you own. The English word slave can have several meanings as well depending on the time and place. It's only recently with the trans-atlantic slave trade wherwbit has come to mean specifically someone who does free labour and isn't counted along with human rights. `Abd means servant. Someone who serves and obeys. An ammah can easily fall into this category.

I don't know whether to use 'should' or 'could'. But standing in the 21st century, It would have been easier for my comprehension if Allah has prohibited both slavery and concubinage totally as He has done regarding 'Alcohol consumption' 'Eating pork' and 'RIba'... And my expectation is that the Muslim majority countries where Sharia prevails, the governments should ban "slavery" and 'concubinage" in totality. I believe this ban is under no circumstance conflicting with the decree of Allah...

Slaves were not cheap, not everybody had it. In those days unlimited wives are very common, Islam limited it to 4. Some people had multiple wives and slaves, some had 1 wife, some had none. Different situation for different people. The amah (Slave girl) was similar to wife with less rights. You had to give her rights too to have her with you. You can have her but you have to follow rules. Unlike others where they have no rules. And she is not some free girl that was made slave, she is prisoner of war (POW). She and her people just tried to kill you. But since they lost and nobody came to free them, they were taken as slaves. Right now in today's world these prisoners are kept in jail and they are tortured and raped by many people. Nobody can see how are they doing. But in Islam it is given to someone who will take care of her and in return she will be in his possession and she will be similar to wife. She will not be beaten by anyone or gang raped and put behind bars where no one can hear her cries. Here she is living with her owner in his house. Think about this.. which one is better? Islam solves practical problems. Right now you are confused because you didn't think about this in this angle. You are thinking that oh she is an innocent girl caught and made slave.. No.. she just came with the army to attack or support the attackers. And if she accepts Islam she cannot be slave too. This is another option for her. Unlike others (non muslims) who made slaves just by catching any free man/ woman and made them slave. In Islam these prisoners are not tortured to death, they are not behind bars for all of their lives, they are absorbed by the society and made part of the society but with lesser rights to begin with, and then some day someone might free (as there are many rules where freeing a slavery is prescribed as an option) them and they are now full free as before. By this time they may become one of us. When they are slaves they are not tortured, they are treated well like brothers and sisters. You have to remember these were people who came to kill you. But you have put them in a process to basically make them one of you one day. They see you how you are good to them and see how you pray and eventually become Muslim. This is what we want right? We just made our enemy Muslim brother or sister. So they can go to paradise too. This happened a lot in Islam. You have to look at the bigger picture. This process helped some of them become big scholar of Islam, and even form a Dynasty (Mamluk Dynasty) was formed out of former slaves. There is no other society was able to incorporate their enemy as one of them like this to the best of my knowledge. Look at this bigger picture and listen to this video again I hope you will be satisfied. Think of Guantanamo what are they doing with Muslims there, think of war that happened and what is not done to POWs. Basically there is no rule how to treat them (there is some UN rules but they break these rules all the time since UN cannot observe what's happening in 'secret' where Allah can see everything so real Muslim is bound to treat a slave well in fear of Allah). You can do what ever you want. But in Islam there is a nice system that will make enemies into one of your own. Which you can find only in Islam. SubhanaAllah. Surat al-Nur 24:33 Islam has given right to slaves that they can make a contract with their owners to earn their freedom(as mention in Quran Surah 24 verse 33) and there are some fuqaha’ who say that this is obligatory and some who say that it is mustahabb for owner to make contract with his/her slave. So if someone doesn't want to be a slave of someone he or she can earn his or her freedom. Al-Bukhari said: "Rawh narrated from Ibn Jurayj: `I said to `Ata', "If I know that my servant has money, is it obligatory for me to write him a contract of emancipation'' He said, "I do not think it can be anything but obligatory.'' `Amr bin Dinar said: "I said to `Ata', `Are you narrating this from anybody' He said, `No,' then he told me that Musa bin Anas told him that Sirin, who had a lot of money, asked Anas for a contract of emancipation and he refused. So he went to `Umar (bin Al-Khattab) (may Allah be pleased with him) and he said, `Write it for him.' He refused, so `Umar hit him with his whip and recited, (give them such writing, if you find that there is good and honesty in them.)Then he wrote the contract.'' This was mentioned by Al-Bukhari with a disconnected chain of narration. It was also narrated by `Abdur-Razzaq who said Ibn Jurayj told them: I said to `Ata', "If I know that my servant has some money, is it obligatory for me to write him a contract of emancipation'' He said, `I do not think it can be anything but obligatory.''' (It was also said by `Amr bin Dinar who said, "I said to `Ata', `Are you narrating this from anybody' He said, `No.''') Ibn Jarir recorded that Sirin wanted Anas bin Malik to write a contract of emancipation and he delayed, then `Umar said to him, "You should certainly write him a contract of emancipation.'' Its chain of narrators is Sahih. Gustave le Bon says in Hadaarat al-‘Arab (Arab Civilization) (p. 459-460): What I sincerely believe is that slavery among the Muslims is better than slavery among any other people, and that the situation of slaves in the east is better than that of servants in Europe, and that slaves in the east are part of the family. Slaves who wanted to be free could attain freedom by expressing their wish. But despite that, they did not resort to exercising this right. End quote. While Islam does permit taking captives, it is neither a religious obligation nor something advised. If the nations of the world, however, agree not to harm the civilians or take them as captives and making them slaves, then Muslims should also follow the same as long as other nations do not betray. I and muslim dont support slavery now bcoz its wrong according to socital perspective now, and the working class getting better.BTW about Islam, is the only religion in the earth through scripture, which gives right to slave. As an institution Allah by several ayat show us there is no need for this institution. And I know PEOPLE (NON BELIEVER) dont believe it. The quatition people mentioned here sura an nisa, sadly haven't mentioned what after that. Islam legislated freeing slave by so many penalties, like for breaking oath, not for having fast, as giving zakat, etc etc. Even islam gives the right or slave for asking their price to be free. Surah 9:60 Zakat is only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and to free those in bondage [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” Surah 4:92 Thus, whoever kills a believer by mistake, then their atonement shall be the freeing of a believing slave...” Surah 5:90 Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy/poor people (masakeen) from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the liberation of a slave...” Surah 24:33 Moreover, if those whom your hands rightfully possess desire a deed of emancipation, then write it for them, if you come to know goodness in them. Moreover, give them of the wealth of God that He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life.” and more and more about hadit and quaran like treat slave as your brother , feed them what you eat The point is people who wants to believe they emphasize on this quote, and the other people as per their wrong perception,Islam did say , dont to be injustice with anybody regarding their religion, its very simple, then people make an issue to make it wrong with historical and cultural perspective back then. Here i acn give two referrence, one of this a article, freedomsundayglobal.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/quranic-injunctions-on-freeing-slaves.pdf And its a vedio kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6TNpqqwf9Fsibs Hopefully you can undestand. Thank you so much brother Yassir. I think many Muslims can accept and easily defend that slavery/abdiyah/ghulamiya existed and was necessary to prevent the POWs from going back to their army or becoming unemployed and homeless. The fact that a raqaba had to be fed and clothed by the patron and is treated like a member of the household is actually very humane and if they petition for freedom it has to be granted. However what the youth find uncomfortable is the sexual relationship with "that which your right hand posseses". The idea they have is that a) how can this be consensual or non exploitative? B) How can Islam that values chastity and sex only within marriage allow this. Obviously Islam has an answer and these are the main things that need to be dealt with. Also regarding bringing back this institution, if there is a war and prisoners cannot be ransomed back then what should happen to them? Should they be released, put in prisons or put in abdiya?
@jesan733

Islam perhaps has an answer, but the reality was e.g. consistent raids for sex slaves in Eastern Africa over more than a thousand years, with about 10 million young girls and teens abducted and shipped to arab elite households. If you think the sexual "relations" that resulted were consensual in any meaningful way, you're blinded by your need to defend your history and classical jurisprudence.

Consider that on a pirate ship, it's very important with discipline. No alcohol, no babes, so that your operation works reliably and smoothly. But there needs to be incentives, so you get a big share of the loot and once in port cities, you were allowed to really enjoy spending that loot on wine and women. Now please realize that after Muhammad had lost his wife's initial fortune, he started out essentially as a combined land pirate and sect leader, raiding caravans, and then he expanded operations from there, while generating a lot of practical insights that were then delivered as divine commands. So, discipline needed to be high to maximize social cohesion and reduce friction, so everything runs smoothly with no internal strife and high ability to project strength to outside adversaries. Thus alcohol, marriages and s-x were among the things that needed discipline. But incentives were also very, very important. So he created this win-win situation: If you win in war, you could get young beautiful s-x slaves and enjoy them more than the boring arranged-marriage wives. If you lose in war, you'd go to heaven and thus gain lots and lots of perfect living s-x dolls (houris). Long-term slavery however wasn't very useful as such, and it's better to maximize the stock of muslims than having a large slave class. So it was smart to encourage manumitting slaves that converted and who gave birth to children, and make those children your own children. That was good for the strength of the muslim society, and manumitting slaves even created some demand for new slaves, and thus helped incentivize more conquest. It all served to pull people into islam while keeping the society tightly regulated. It was very, very clever and practical. You have to admire the very insightful rules Muhammad created, and how swiftly islam expanded thanks to those.

How is it respectful to force yourself on to a slave woman who is married? What most likely is the scenario is that the womans husband died in war. @@rubaitislam9002 Slavery is not alcohol. This big institution could not be abolished all at once. The slaves would riot and cause trouble, perhaps many people would have been killed. Also they would be left with no accommodation and no food. A better way to end it was gradually stopping it like it was done by the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The prophet forbade enslaving by capturing innocent people, that were not prisoners of war, which was common before Islam. Thereby the biggest source of slaves was closed and by freeing slaves in order to spiritually atone for one's sins (sins of various kinds), as it is mentioned in the Quran over and over again, the slave-population would no longer be. Of course after the prophet had died, peace be upon him, this plan was not successfully realized by the arabs, but he established laws to let the wellbeing of slaves be ensured.

Kindly do give us an insight of where it is said in the Islamic teachings that yes, you can keep a a free man or woman as a slave or yes its okay to treat any human as a slave. On the contrary, Islam teaches us to treat the slaves as no lesser than your own siblings. And yes, slavery was not the same in every part of the world. There were even dynasties of slaves. My dear Dr. Yasir Qadhi why you are saying that someone cannot set them (war captured) free?????? Are you unaware of the following verse of Quran (47:4) When you meet the unbelievers (in battle), smite their necks until you have crushed them, then bind your captives firmly; thereafter (you are entitled to) set them free, either by an act of grace, or against ransom, until the war ends. You have already admitted that the slavery begun from war captives and above verse is about the word captives. The word has three portions 1. smite their necks--- this is pure war (so that the enemy not feel you week) 2. set them free by an act of grace---- so this is the first most important order for the captives, that to make them free 3. set them free against ransom--- now mark my words that the order of ransom is AFTER is the order of setting them free why??????? Because setting the war captives free is the first preference by the God (why did the God use the word "set them free" before "ransom" please think it!!). "set them free" is on behalf of the winner army. But if someone feels it insulting to get free without paying ransom (which was the common practice that days) then for his own satisfaction he can pay the ransom (remember this is on behalf of the war captive not the winning army). And following is the most important proof of Islam against slavery. The greatest undeniable proof of Islam against slavery is by the personality of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him with his own life example, an undeniable example, that what he did with his own slave gifted to him by his wife Khadija (AND REMEMBER THAT WAS BEFORE HIS PROPHET-HOOD). You know what he did with that slave named Zaid?????? For your greatest surprise he made him his ADOPTED SON add. So when the messenger of God himself is converting a slave to his adopted son there is no more room for slavery Islam. How is it possible for such a person to order his followers to make slaves which he doesn't like for himself??????????????? Truth reflects from your deeds. Do not believe in the fake tempered history and wrong interpretation of Islam.

The very fact that modern societies did choose to abolish slavery goes to show that it certainly is possible to completely prohibit the practice, Islam simply chose not to do away with it outright. If you have to justify your religious teachings with, "every other culture was doing it at the time," that is really not good enough. If slaves could be freed so easily and it was even ENCOURAGED, then clearly it was not a necessity to capture prisoners of war at all, just pandering to the desires of those who wanted one. Not to mention the poor women who became slaves, I noticed the speaker neatly stepped around the obvious implication about how those children they had were conceived. If you're a slave, it really cannot be considered, under any stretch of the imagination, consent. Islam may have treated their slaves less badly than other cultures, but the very practice was still utterly condemnable.

people want to behave god or prophet as 21 st century, and you are judging them taking 21 st century as a standard. Just curious: you say NO other religion or society was anti-slavery or put laws around it. Yet I wonder if you knew that the early 1st century Church (followers of Jesus) stressed that “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” There are numerous accounts of Christians during the time of Rome and rampant slavery where all were welcome to the family of believers and everyone is seen as equal in the eyes of YHWH. Historically speaking, Islam is not the first to stress equality as it came 600 years after. And it still advocated for slavery as seen by Muhammad who owned slaves himself and slept with them. Jesus never participated in this institution but instead washed the feet of those who were oppressed by the systems of the day and invited slaves to a place at the table with him.... how can you say that Islam is truly against slavery just because it created laws just to make it “not as bad” as it had always been.

Prophet PBUH ddnt own slaves. In Islam it was more of a reform which lead to abolishment of slavery. The rules were strict to treatment of slaves and to end human trading by clearly informing that slaves can only be acquired from prisoners of war (who fought the war), for whom, the defeated party ddnt or couldnt pay ransom for their freedom. There were also options for the POW himself or herself to plead their case in front of a judge for a ransom to be paid later. Slavery was not the same in every part of the world. There were even dynasties of slaves. You hear the word slave and slavery and you automatically associate it with the the gruesome Atlantic way things were. And the way of labor prior to post colonialist era was slave labor and not paid labor. You had a master, who is responsible for you in every sense. If you need more info about this topic on where Islam stands, read Slavery in Islam by Jonathan Brown. Or if you just want to critique, you are most welcome to do so.

@@NRFP The Zanj Rebellion (Arabic: ثورة الزنج Thawrat al-Zanj / Zinj) was a major revolt against the Abbasid Caliphate, which took place from 869 until 883. Begun near the city of Basra in present-day southern Iraq and led by one Ali ibn Muhammad, the insurrection involved enslaved Bantu-speaking people (Zanj) who had originally been captured from the coast of Southeast Africa and transported to the Middle East, principally to drain the region's salt marshes.[3] It grew to involve slaves and freemen, including both Southeastern Africans and Arabs, from several regions of the Caliphate, and claimed tens of thousands of lives before it was finally defeated.[4]

Its chain of narrators is Sahih. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT AN ISLAMIC SCHOLAR First of all slavery is not a pillar of Islam. An Islamic society can run successfully without having slavery. I would like to say that slavery was a universal phenomenon. It was deeply rooted in the societies and civilizations at that time. Prisoners of war were taken as a slave and were distributed in the societies to serve their owners. Muslims suffered the same fate when they were captured by the enemies. By the way slavery is no longer part of Islamic society. Muslim nations have signed on agreement that they will not take Prisoner of war as slaves.

No, you're mistaken. Islaam does not tolerate sexual intercourse with pre-pubescents. If you studied and investigated it, you would know that what Islamic law considers a "marriage" differs somewhat to what other ideologies view as a "marriage". With that said, while not popular in our era/society, Islaam permits a type of "marriage" wherein a child is promised in marriage to another (by their guardian) prior to puberty. However, while islaam refers to this as a type of "marriage", in practice this is really a promise to marry, as the child does not actually engage in intercourse, provide for their spouse, having a honeymoon, etc (i.e. They don't live like a husband/wife). Rather, the child is merely treated as a child. Once the child then reaches maturity and is an adult, they are given the option to decide whether they would like to continue with a married relationship with the person they were promised to (i.e. to live as husband/wife with them, to support each other, engage in intercourse as married couples do, have kids, etc.) or to not do so. The choice is completely in their hands. While this may feel rather bizarre to many of us, it accommodates many cultures wherein promises to marry are the norm.

Regardless of the degree and extent of different types of slavery during different periods of history in different cultures, even at its most 'humane', slavery and the concept of owning and controlling another human being as property, is a grave injustice and legitimization of the degradation of the fundamental essence, sovereignty and humanity of all people who should be born free. End of. There can be no justification for allowing this practice to continue even in a regulated form, which goes aganist the idea of a just and true god who is perfect and should be beyond human imperfections. The fact that the islamic god fails to establish this fundamental principle without compromise, is an indication that allah is flawed and therefore cannot be the one true and just God abd Islam cannot be the perfect and one true religion

A flawed God would have allowed slavery and had done nothing about it because everyone else was doing the same. So, basically, it's not really slavery, because other people treated their slaves worse, and other people had slaves, too. Got it. Now, call me an Islamophobe, and doubtless someone will, but a truly benevolent Supreme Deity isn't going to tell his followers to have slaves since everyone else does. After all, he didn't tell them worship idols because everyone else was, now did he? He was fine with changing society, so the logic that he would not forbid slavery is prime facie absurd. The argument that slaves were needed at any time of history because mutually voluntary transactions were insufficient to make in-demand labor happen is utterly absurd. And the argument that "everyone was doing it [slavery]" is a lie. Enslavement of non-criminal people was not a practice in Hindu India nor was it in Zoroastrian Persia (it's explicitly forbidden in the latter case). So stop using all these false excuses. The fact of the matter is that Islam does not forbid slavery because slavery does not go against Islam's basic morality. That history shows that Islamic invaders took slaves over and over and over and over again, inevitably from the people they invaded and wanted to make an example of, demonstrates this beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Muslims justified sex slave by telling that such women would select immoral life otherwise is stupid. His argument that such women preferred sex slave is nonsense. I do not take argument that women came voluntarly for being sex slaved(or voluntary sex) to the MURDERERS OF THEIR FATHER BROTHER AND HUSBAND..... During civil war against naxalaite in north east India govrnment has given homes to widows and orphan girls and gave them good education.I believe that is the most ethical way to do things and that is what is mostly followed in civilised society rather than giving option of sex slavery or starvation. Solution: 1. Take maximum care to ensure war not take place 2. If war is the only solution(that is any one of them is aggressive on taking opposite persons rights) then ensure that victims are given a decent life Women in failing part surely would not have opted slavery because their parents/husbands were killed by opposite party. In 21st centuary we should try to bring peace by universal brotherhood ,love etc, instead of fighting in the name of religion. Religions divide the world.

Even if he somehow meant specifically in Arabia (nothing suggests he did), the Jews in Arabia had followed strict laws in regards to slavery since the time of Moses, well over 2,000 years before Islam. In fact, the Mosaic laws were so compassionate and just that people *volunteered* to become slaves (it was common for immigrants and poor Jews to choose to be slaves). What I have studied that in Islam there is no concept of Slavery there is a concept of riqq in Islam which is very different than slavery so the word slave or slavery that I am using is for the sake of an argument. Before Islam there were many ways to enslave people such as kidnapping, debt, poverty and Prisoner of war etc. Free people were sold and purchased, but Islam prohibited this practice and only limited to one that is Prisoner of war which not even obligatory for a Muslim leaders to make them as slaves because in Islam there are other options available for Prisoners of war that is either he can free the prisoners of war or exchange them with the muslim prisoners or he can Exchange them for money or he can allocate them to household basically act as a servant. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him created a different institution known as riqq by abolishing Pre-Islamic Slavery. The Islamic concept of riqq and Ubudiyyah which is translated as slavery we shouldn't even call it slavery because the notions of Islam are so different than what existed 200 years ago. What I am trying to say is that there is a literal translation of the word and there is a translation of equivalence. Translation of Raqabah and Zariya does not literally translated as slave in english. The word slave in english language does not represent the literal translation of Arabic word Raqabah or Zariya. The translation of raqabah and zariya in Islamic law does not conceptually translated as slave by Western understanding of that concept. The word usually translated as slaves from the Arabic text should be change to reflect the accurate meaning indentured servant or workers which are more accurate translation, indentured means their legal obligations and servant means anyone who serves for example a civil servant. Therefore an indentured servant means that the law obliges them to render terms of service. So for the sake of an argument I had use word slave in order to make my article simple. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: Do not refer to anyone as 'my slave,' for all of you are the slaves of Allah. Rather, you should refer to him as 'my young man.' The slave should not refer to anyone as 'my lord,' but rather he should refer to him as 'my master.' Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2414, Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi The concept of riqq was the solution of Prisoners of war in Islam
