Thanks for mentioning toys specifically! I have a GSD that is high drive but not food motivated so I've been rewarding with a toy. The visual of how you do that was super helpful!

Yeah, I’ve been wanting my dog to come here and be in front of me with that distance like what I’ve been seeing in videos instead of sitting or down on my side or going around me.

This is such a great breakdown and super helpful for helping train for heel with our puppy. I didn't realize there could be a wrong way to do it, but I can see now how much more effective the heel will be, when being mindful of hand placement for the reward. Thank you.

Great! I have a question regarding markers. I use “good” as a continuation marker and “yes” as the terminal marker. “Free” is my go be a dog” marker. When I teach place (climb), should I use the terminal marker to release from the place? I suppose it is the same question for all commands: ie when do you use the terminal marker, and when do you use the “go be a dog” marker? My thought was that the terminal marker is a release, but not a release to freedom, the “go be a dog” marker (“free” or “break”) is a release to freedom, which could be for a few seconds or a few minutes, or until we have another training session?
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Hi Zahed. The terminal marker is release and reward, but we are still training. My release word is "break" and that's the "go be a dog" word (not marker). A marker is defined but a word or sound that either predicts a reward or a correction. So a "no" can be a conditioned punisher. this marks a bad behavior that we don't want to be repeated. We use the term "marker" because it is marking a moment in time when the dog is right or wrong. The release word is simply releasing the dog, but not marking a behavior. Here's a video that breaks it down a little more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eobSp6acaLSheLc Thanks again for the excellent question!

Cool videos Nate. I'm getting a puppy soon and am putting together a training system, looking at what other trainers do, etc, and have found your videos clear and concise. I have a quick question/idea: Regarding the conditioned reward words, would you imagine it could be beneficial to have a different marker word for for each reward category? For example, Yes for continuous food reward. Free for terminal food reward. Toy for terminal toy play reward. Love for terminal affectionate reward (These latter two are inherently terminal rewards I think, probably not worth having a continuous reward for anything other than food). I imagine these could have different strengths with different dogs, but I thought, given the research I've done on conditioning, that it could have a more powerful benefit to resist behavior extinction to have different words for different rewards to keep words and their outcomes tightly neurally bound. It could also have a higher chance of engaging all of these reward systems with any given dog without confusing them. For example, I wonder how much people claiming that their dog isn't play motivated may simply be that the dog is quite fairly expecting food, not a toy, on hearing the reward marker! And that conditioning a puppy early on with a specific and separate Toy word during play sessions could have powerful benefits to helping (some) puppies that struggle to generalilse that word later? I haven't asked any other trainers about this idea, but would love to hear what your thoughts are :) Cheers for your content!

Great question! Thanks, I appreciate that. Yes, you can definitely use different sounds for different types of rewards. Some of my trainer friends use a different marker for food and a different marker for a toy and even a different marker to release the dog to go get the toy instead of coming to get the toy from the human. I also recently started a Facebook group to support my KZbin subscriber's training. You can post videos there and ask any training questions that you may have. I hope to see you there! :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/

I see a lot of people move the treats towards their faces before they hand them to their dogs. Is that supposed to help with the focus on the face or what's the point of that? I have never seen you do that...
@NateSchoemer3 жыл бұрын
I start that way, as you can see in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5y9aKiZpbBsqcU Jump to 8:50 However, once I teach the advanced marker training, then the dog knows to look at my face. So I no longer need to bring my hands towards my face. When trainers mark a behavior and bring the food to their face before rewarding, it's an attempt to make the dog look at their face more. However, I've never felt it was necessary to do that after successful engagement training has been completed.

@@NateSchoemer Thank you! I always thought it looks like they're blessing the food and I'm happy it's not required :) My training is actually going well thanks to your advice but it's as much an exercise in patience for me as it is for the dog

Hey I’m about to get a puppy and have been watching your videos as I’m wanting my dog to be very well trained. But the dog will also be a hunting dog and be a protector of kids and clients from bears. Have you trained hunting dogs and in your experience does the way you train hinder a hunting dog? Like when I’m hunting or my dog is just with me and i want her to pay attention to smells and sounds around us to detect a bear or something I won’t want her just focused on me, I won’t want her just looking up at me waiting for me to give her a task so she can get a treat. What do you think?
@NateSchoemer3 жыл бұрын
I've trained dogs that became hunting dogs, but I haven't gone out and done hands-on with a hunting dog in a hunting environment. Dogs naturally want to sniff and check out their environment. Just let the dog know it's an okay behavior and reward the behaviors that you like. Check out this video on free shaping: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qna4Z5qDlNh7j6s Most dogs will naturally bark if they see a predator. My main concern would be to have the dog trained on a remote collar, so I can call the dog back to me if he's off-leash. Your question actually just prompted me to order a few dog training hunting books. Check back in a month and I'll give you a better answer. Cheers!

I have a 9mth old GSD, she does well with training however since we've been engaging with other dogs her focus doesn't remain on me anymore, regardless of what I offer. She used to be very anxious around dogs and people, now that she's overcoming that she'll want to rip my arm off from a heel to play with another dog.

Hi Trixi, If you are unable to get the results that you need using reward-based training techniques, then you may need to use corrections. Remember, everything our dogs do is based on motivation. They are either motivated to access something pleasant or motivated to prevent something unpleasant. Whichever factor is the most motivating will determine the dog's behavior. If you feel you need to add corrections in your training, here are some online resources that will teach you how to do it correctly to maximize your results: Here is a video I put together on adding corrections using either a martingale collar or pinch collar: facebook.com/nathan.schoemer/videos/10213850487672790/ Here is an online course that will teach you how to correctly use a remote training collar: university.leerburg.com/Catalog/viewCourse/cid/100

Nate I don't get it what the difference between come and free
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Raul! Come is a command, while free is my terminal marker. A terminal marker is a word or sound that always predicts a release and a reward. It's similar to a paycheck for a human. The paycheck only has value because of what it predicts. If the check bounced, then it would become worthless. Going to work would be like the come when called. You have to go to work to get the paycheck, but you don't get a paycheck every day you go to work. The dog has to perform the come when called to get the treat, but the come when called doesn't always predict the treat. I hope this makes sense and thanks for supporting the channel. Also, be sure to join my new Facebook group to continue learning how to train your dog with direct support from me and the rest of the community. :) facebook.com/groups/NateSchoemers/

@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Are you looking for a working line GSD or more family pet GSD? If you are looking more for a working dog, then you would want to start looking into breeders that breed for that type of training. If you're looking for a pet, then I would suggest checking out the local shelters. Ask your parents to take you to the local shelters at some point. It's always a good thing to give a dog a second chance. Thanks for the comment!

How/when do you move from training with treats for specific commands, training with toys for specific commands, and then just relying on verbal commands (and praise) for specific commands? When and what does that transition look like? Or, are you just always carrying treats with you wherever you go!
