Also the sorceress never specified that the female servants didn't count and you'd think they'd all be really keen on breaking the curse, but yeah I guess I'd rather be a beast forever than marry a lowly servant too.
Pick your movie that should be remade with real humans:
Treasure Planet - / jennynicholson
Brother Bear - / jennyenicholson
Zootopia and they're in fursuits - / spider_jewel
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad - / jennynicholsonvids
Batman V Superman - / spiderjewel

My character design teacher was an animator on beauty and the beast. He loved animating Belle, but was usually relegated to animating Chip, who got more scenes in the movie bc focus groups enjoyed him so much. My teacher would take out his frustration by doing little animations of Chip falling to the ground and smashing into little pieces lol

Y'know what annoyed me? The Beast got off super easy when he got cursed by the witch, in comparison to the servants who had literally nothing to do with whatever got them cursed in the first place. Like, sure, he's a beast but at least he has fingers. He can wear clothes and, y'know, use doors and that. Try explaining to the guy who got turned into a butter knife why he shouldn't spend the rest of his miserable, anthropomorphic existence trying to stab The Beast.

I think the implication is that the servants (who were responsible for Beast's upbringing) didn't do anything to... dissuade or correct his behavior. So like, theyre guilty by association and neglectful upbringing? medieval logic is weird sometimes.

In the original story, the "Beast" was a child. He was a young prince, maybe eleven or so. Him being turned into a monster was meant to teach a lesson, but the witch was cruel from the beginning. A child didn't let her into his home while his parents were away, thats like...normal??? Its a weird thing to get lost in time but the beast cannot read or act right bc he never learned how as a human child. and the servants were loyal to the boy who was lonely with away parents, for that they were punished.

I always wondered what happened to the villagers after the movie. Their leader is dead, most of the men have been wounded by closets and knives, everyone must have been terrified. Not to mention all of a sudden there's a prince living right next door who is probably not well disposed toward them. What happened next? Careful diplomatic rapprochement? All involved pretend nothing happened? Maybe Lefou climbs from Gaston's shadow and assumes a leadership role. That's worth a miniseries at least.

I always point out the servants in beauty in the beast too. Like how the movie focuses so much on the plight of the beast. But, like, what about the guy that wakes up one day and he's like a fuckin stove or something. And then what do they do with the stove they had? Does the guy throw it out like "I'm the stove now" or what? And how come lumiere was attracted to the feather duster? like I know they drew her all sexy and when she was a human she was definitely hot, but man it's feather duster how does that do anything for you sexually. And lastly what did they even do to deserve any of this? I would way rather be a beast than a spoon or a dish or something and all these servants seem like they're the fucking nicest people. Can you imagine if you were turned into a spaghetti strainer and the only way for you to turn back was to help your last employer get a girlfriend? it's bullshit, it's total bullshit

It's oversimplified... because it's a less than 90 minute movie. But I assume the servants get turned into the furniture that already exists. I know we see them transform back into people and don't see the furniture get replaced. But if you saw an animated representation of Lumiere's consciousness leaving a candlestick and becoming a person that would just create more questions about souls and how a corporeal body was conjured from nothing.

The material difference between the Beast and Gaston is that the Beast knows he's got a problem and Gaston doesn't. Sure, at the beginning the Beast is all emo and petulant, but he knows that being an asshole got him cursed and we see him trying (and failing pathetically, but still) to be better. Gaston, by contrast, is shallow and doesn't respect people and also thinks that he's already positively perfect in every way. They both start out aggressive and disrespectful, but because Beast recognizes those as bad things he is able to improve himself, while Gaston considers them good things and consequently turns into a monster. This is not an insignificant distinction. Haven't seen the new movie yet, but the Broadway version mitigated a lot of these issues. 1. Yep, when the time limit runs out they all are stuck the way they are. This sucks for the Beast cuz, y'know, sometimes you need people in your life who aren't in love with you to have some basic acceptance of you, and Belle because based on her opinions of Gaston she's not a fan of excessive body hair, but is mainly tragic for the household. There's a really tear-jerking exchange where Chip's wondering if he'll ever get to be a boy again. About not telling her, I think I remember that someone can't break the spell if they know about it, but I'm not positive. Yeah, I don't know if I'd call the library a gift per se, but that doesn't mean it's not kind. There's very little that's more meaningful to Belle than books. I imagine that thought process less as "I will magnanimously allow her to use the library on premises" than "WHAT?! She hasn't seen the library yet?! Oh my god I have to show her the library she'll be so happy!" Honestly, the biggest WTF I get from the the original movie and the Broadway version is: the Enchantress is a horrible person. "This spoiled orphan teenager is acting like a petulant entitled teenager, I will put him and the countless innocent people who work on this estate under a curse until and unless he loves and is loved by some third party who doesn't know anything about any of this. This is clearly the most effective and least morally reprehensible way to teach a teenage boy to be less of a dick."
@katharineeavan9705
@katharineeavan9705 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, realising you're a terrible person because someone literally told you so then turned you into a beast to reflect your flaws, and then changing your ways because the curse gives you a direct, self-serving reason to do so is a pretty weak redemption arc and doesn't really say much about the character's inherent goodness. It just means the character was less willing to stay ugly than to figure out why they're a dick. If Gaston had been cursed the same way, there's no reason to presume he wouldn't also have realised "damn, there's really something about me that's so horrible someone would turn me into an unfrickable monster as a big FU to my vanity and pride. maybe i should work on that so someone might actually like me enough without my lantern jaw to break this curse"
@CatHasOpinions734
@CatHasOpinions734 3 жыл бұрын
@@katharineeavan9705 tbh in my experience literally telling someone they're being a terrible person almost never leads to them stopping to reflect and become better, like how Gaston reacts in the 3rd act after Belle calls him out. Having a few years to stop and think probably also helped, but that brings up another point in the beast's favor: he was a teenager at the time, whereas Gaston seems to be in his mid-20s and has much less excuse.

Well, yeah. The Enchantress is a terrible, spiteful, creature, because she’s of the fae. Any slight, no matter how petty, is worthy of exquisite punishment. That’s what the curse on the prince and the servants are: punishment. Not a lesson, not a puzzle, a cruel joke played on a thirteen year old boy and all his innocent serfs.

@Nonaya Bidness ... did we watch different movies? Gaston very obviously DOES NOT accept Belle's rejection: she tries to get rid of him, he refuses, she tricks him to get him out of her house, he angrily insists that he's still going to "have her," he concocts a scheme to blackmail her by threatening to imprison her father if she doesn't marry him, and when she still says no he imprisons her. He starts out refusing to take no for an answer, and only gets worse over time.

Actually, I don't agree with the Gaston Redemption/ Belle Fixing Beast part. I don't think it's Belle who changes the Beast, it's the Beast who changes the Beast. He's just motivated by her. I think it’s pretty clear why Gaston wants Belle, theme-wise. It’s explained in the opening song. He says he’s got his sights set on Belle and when LeFou tries to warn him that Belle’s a weirdo, Gaston silences him (by way of smashing his face in with the butt of a rifle, which, I believe, is what gave Rich Evans that Beautiful Mind moment in that episode of BotW). Then Gaston says he doesn’t give a shit about Belles’s personality. She’s the hottest girl in town, which makes her the best girl in town. Superficiality and judging others solely by their appearance. Classic Beauty and the Beast mistake.

The beast isn't as handsome or likable as Chewbacca. I'd like to see the story adapted to Star Wars. Have a young Princess Liea taken by the "beast" played by Chewbacca. Han Solo plays the part of Gaston and all the droids play the furniture. Now I'd pay to see that.

I've got to disagree with you about Gaston not being offered redemption. During his fight with the Beast, Gaston is overpowered. Beast holds him off the edge of a parapet with the threat of dropping him. Gaston pleads for his life, and the Beast sees this and pulls him back onto solid footing, and tells him to leave. Right there, Gaston has lost and could have left. He chose to climb up the roof to stab the Beast in the back. It was only when he decided to administer a second stab that he lost his hold and fell. He is entirely responsible for his own demise.

Gaston, who is a full grown man tries to commit murder because the girl he thinks is hot won't bone him, the Beast when he was supposedly 11, just turned away a random old woman because of her appearance. There's literally a point in the film at which Gaston is offered a chance at redemption, by the Beast himself. But instead of leaving and trying to move on with his life, he literally stabs the Beast in the back. Also Gaston literally exploited an entire village's fear because he wanted to murder someone to spite the girl who won't bone him. Also Gaston basically sexually harasses Belle throughout the film. So yeah, I'm gonna say Gaston is definitely worse than the Beast, and deserved what he got.
@rebeccahicks2392

Kidnapping a woman (which is something that generally includes sexual stuff) is far far worse than the type of sexual harassment Gaston engaged in. Yeah Gaston's not a great guy, but you can't compare him to the Beast if you're leaving out the main bad thing the Beast did. Also, considering that the Beast was kidnapping people, the village was right to storm the castle and it wouldn't have been murder, even if their leader had impure motives.

I think with Gaston, he hunted for sport, was basically worshiped because he was the "epitome" of manliness, and he was manipulative. Gaston got what he wanted and was set in his way. The Beast learned and developed, he showed a softer side, and when it came down to it was willing to let Belle go while Gaston probably just wanted Belle because she'd be the only girl to turn him down. Also I assumed when he 'gave' her the library it included all the books and arrangements; whatever she wanted to do with it was hers. So, The Beast is like Kristoff(a bit of a fixer-upper), Belle looks beyond the topical(doesnt judge a book by its cover), and Gaston just wants a new objective to overcome(challenge accepted!). Also there was a dog that got turned into a fancy ottoman. Poor pupper.

The Beast is very "manly", after all, he's 3 times bigger than Belle but uses his strength to save her from wolves, and his resources to provide her comfort and care. He has masculinity guided by wisdom. Gaston, on the other hand, is masculine but guided by vanity, that's why he uses his strength to attack Beast and his resources (which for him are connections in town) to force Belle to marry him. This is why I think it's valid that Beast and Gaston are so similar and their actions are so much alike, but it's evident Beast is a hero and Gaston is a villain.
@joeyc4836
@joeyc4836 7 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention entitlement differences(inherent value of Beast vs earned of Gaston) and the outcome of their situations but you pointed out vanity; that's the perfect word to describe everything of Gaston. I think its an accurate description and predictor of his actions. IDK if Beast has wisdom yet, although his past experience affected him, he still has faults but definitely has a willingness to learn and be better.
@owenbrasseaux3894

I think the descriptions of Gaston's hunting was metaphorical for the way he goes after women. He views them as a prize, and values his ability to catch them whenever he wants. He even says the other girls are like rabbits, and Belle is more of a challenge. No one else seems to think Belle is the prettiest but he wants her because she's a challenge, she's the only one that doesn't throw herself at him. If he can get Belle, he proves to himself that he's a great "hunter". Jenny pointed out mostly how beast and Gaston are similar, but this sets up their one main difference. Gaston has a need to make Belle his, beast is reluctant at first and actually gets to know Belle and share her interests before starting a relationship. Although now that I think about it, that seems backwards when compared to the characters actions. Beast is supposed to be the genuine and caring one, but he meets her by locking her up in his castle forever. Gaston just asks her and gets turned down. Also it's kind of bullshit that this movie gets to use the "Beauty is on the inside" thing even though the beast turns back into a beautiful prince at the end and the story is driven by Gaston and beast falling in love with Belle, who is beautiful the whole time. Im pretty sure Shrek handled that a lot better. Shit, I think I like Shreks story better. Oh god help

In the original Beauty and the Beast, our Beauty or Belle is a normal maiden. She isn't anything special except she is lovely, a beauty, and is very simple. When she goes to be the Beasts prisoner he is kind to her, but she fears his appearance. She is given everything in the palace and anything she wants as long as she stays with the Beast, who keeps asking her to marry him, over and over again. But he's never cruel. She becomes friends with him because he's kind and after a short time she returns home because her Father is ill. Her sisters trick her out of jealousy for her wealthy appearance so that the Beast will die from their broken promise, but she does return. Heart broken over whats happened she tells him she does love him and will marry him, which breaks his spell and he becomes a Prince again. In the original there was never a time limit he was just cursed but he remained Princely but depressed. There are other version, but most are very much the same. It was Disney that brought gave the story more bite. They made Belle strange for her time, they made the Beast cruel, they gave him a time limit, and added Gaston. Now here's the thing. If you gave up your freedom right now for someone you love, a family member, a dear friend, and were later told. "I'm cursed to be like this for another few weeks. If you don't love me by then I will never be human again and neither will anyone else in my palace." Yeah there is no way you'd fall in love with them. Your literally being told to love someone, in Disney's case, was cruel, like hell you'd every love him. Belle's words would be "I can't just love you, I don't even know you, it takes time" But time is not what the Beast has. So by wanting him or anyone to tell her about the curse is actually wrong because she'd either want nothing to do with him or pity him and neither would be love. So your screwing everyone over. More then likely those other Tea Cups were the children of the staff that happened to live there as they are never seen in human form or even at the end, so Chip is siblings with them only as a cup. My guess is in the end they ran off to find their real parents in the castle. Gaston is a spoiled ass. Everyone wants him or likes him except Belle. She is the weirdo in town, because she is beautiful but isn't married or looking for a husband. Or going after Gaston. They don't understand why any woman wouldn't' want a man like Gaston. But that's the problem. Gaston is his own movie. He's the man that learns that he needs to give a damn about others then himself. But he doesn't get that chance because deep down he's a monster. Never judge a book by it's cover.

For the first one... Not telling Belle is probably the one thing I whole heartedly agree with (as in they shouldn't tell her). I think the cursed mirror makes total sense (I've actually never heard that theory before). Didn't the sorceress give it to the Beast so he could watch the outside world? I bet she cursed it so he would see the worst thing possible. When he was alone, it was that people were happy without him. When he fell in love with Belle, it was that she was in pain.

I don't really think the beast and Gaston are the same at all. I mean they did similar things like hold her dad captive, but for different reasons. Also the beast didn't really shove himself at Belle and be overly arrogant and misogynistic. The beast also got over himself for her and when he had a chance to actually be loved by her he let her leave and accepted that he may not see her again and be free from the curse but her being happy was more important than that. Gaston really isn't the same as the beast IMO or at least they did things for much different reasons. Belle didn't try to "change" Gaston or help him because I mean, its quite obvious he was too full of himself to ever question why he'd need to change. The enchantress was really what the beast needed to introduce the thought that it doesn't matter that you're beautiful and you need something other than that for yourself. I'm kinda convinced Gaston would've started to be able to take help if he got that kind of inspiration that his and others beauty are not as important as he thinks. This is my favorite disney movie don't try to tell me the beast is the same as Gaston lmao I don't wanna hear thatttt

After he is better, you will both be free to leave, or stay. It's up to you. And when the Beast was was risking his life to protect her from the wolves. To touch on the things you talked about, Beast is also willing to change. Gaston is not. And not to be 'like everyone else' but the beast would have had to be like eleven years old when the enchantress cursed him so... yeah. I'd be kinda glad he didn't find someone when the curse started or anything like that. Your thing that you focus on is misses pots and chip and yeah that is disturbing but let's also not forget the fact the prince was likely like eleven when he was cursed so... with that in mind he was basically cursed for being a bratty eleven year old. Also... about the chip thing... did you notice how none of the other kids even seemed to exist when they changed back? Like... they just ceased to exist. Did she have a bunch of babies while she was a tea pot and because they were born cups they disappeared instead of 'changed back' because they had not been around at the beginning of the curse, before it started? So many morbid things can be wondered about in regards to that. So very many things. Like was chip an infant when they were cursed? He would have had to be. What sort of evil bitch curses a baby and somehow isn't a villain but painted as some righteous figure dealing curses out to people who deserve it? What baby even deserves that? Enchantress was an evil vindictive thing, we sure she wasn't related to maleficent or something with the cursing of children and babies being involved? lol No actually I am half serious. At least the same brand of evil.

Why should Gaston change? Just because he is an alpha? Aren't three quarters of fairy tales about a handsome hero who kills a vicious ogre who lives in a castle?
@AuroraLalune
@AuroraLalune 7 жыл бұрын
Before I answer. He isn't seeking to change and it's stupid to get involved with people as "projects" as if they aren't people. So don't mistake my answer. Gaston is a self serving self centered egotistical bastard who constantly gives bell crap for reading and things she just generally likes. He ridicules the people she loves, such as her father, without any thought to Bell's feelings. He doesn't actually love bell. He doesn't even like Bell. He likes the idea of who he thinks he can change her to be. He's just an asshole who doesn't want anyone else to have her. He himself doesn't desire bell as a human being nor does he care for the contents of her heart. Gaston would be happy to obtain Bell like an object and wouldn't care in the least if that resulted in Bell herself being utterly soul wrenchingly miserable. So yes. Gaston SHOULD change but that's his choice. As for why he should change? Because if you didn't notice Gaston lived in the end, to die alone because he was an unrepentant selfish dickwad who didn't care if Bell wanted him or not, he just wanted to control her life and possess her like one of his trophies he's got mounted on the wall. He wanted her because no one else had obtained her, not because he cared about her as a human being because that is even much deeper than the shallow self centered way Gaston treated Bell. Like a prize to be mounted on his wall, not a living, breathing, thinking, feeling human being whose thoughts and feelings actually mattered to him because it's quite obvious he didn't. So he died alone instead of with someone who'd love him or wanted him even, by his side. Gaston literally died the way he did specifically as a direct result of the person he was, that which his character embodies. So yeah. Gaston SHOULD change. It's just not up to anyone else to try to manipulate a change or try to make someone something they are not, something Gaston himself repeatedly tries to do to bell. That's why. As for heroes in stories. When was the last time you heard a story like that where the prince forced his will upon an unwilling maiden or stood by while another did so. Being bold itself does not make a hero. It is the values they uphold, the code of honor and heart one lives by. Besides as an alpha he'd make the worst one in history. It is a terrible Alpha, and one who gets overthrown when pack has reached limit, who puts themselves first instead of pack. Pack that puts up with an alpha so overwhelmingly selfish and otherwise oblivious to the needs of the pack is a dead pack. Or are you refering to the childish concept some seem to hold onto that being an alpha or otherwise identifying with said concept just means someone who bosses people around and gets what they want when they want it? Even among wolves it is the way of a very short life to put themselves above pack rather than take care of them. In no way shape or form is he an alpha. Just a charismatic asshole who dies alone because of his own selfish choices. Charisma is not needed for an alpha nor does it make one an alpha. Only actions. Choices. And the support of pack. A lone pup playing alpha is not an alpha at all. Being someone who plays that king of the castle bullshit is the very opposite of an Alpha.

Belle is like the woman I have locked in my basement, the Beast represents the loneliness and lust that drove me to kidnap her, and the curse deadline is the Statute of Limitations. If I can't get her to fall in love with me before that runs out, I can't marry her so we can live happily ever after. Thank you Disney for showing me the way to find true love. It didn't work with previous women and I had to bury them in the backyard, but I have a really good feeling about this one, and I wont ever give up, because: A dream is a wish your heart makes When you're fast asleep No matter how your heart is grieving If you keep on believing The dream that you wish will come true Have faith in your dreams and someday Your rainbow will come smiling through Don't let your heart be filled with sorrow For all you know tomorrow The dream that you wish will come true

I love how you wore your shirt off the shoulder, like Belle's dress! ;D You're pretty good at analyzing stories, it's always funny and thought provoking to listen to your take on things. Thanks so much! I'm actually watching the live action movie tonight, so I'll definitely be thinking about your 'implications of the story' to see if any are addressed.

What i really enjoy about this channel is the silence of the credits and the fact that like an MCU movie she leaves a funny tidbit for the end to compel you to watch the whole thing so all the views are had. KZbin doesn't really like counting views if you don't watch the whole thing but really i just can't be arsed to sit through more than 30 seconds of end credits over call to action if i don't get a reward at the end

Dunno if you read fanfic but there is a good one about Gaston's redemption called "Picture This" by TrudiRose and I highly recommend it if you want to see how that redemption might realistically endure. Good points, I have this movie memorized and had thought of some but not all of these.
