It lies in your mind. Your perception. If women didn’t bend to men’s will, we could feel beautiful no matter what we did. Men exude this confidence all the time. They don’t fret over this nonsense. Try this, tell yourself your the most beautiful women in the world, don’t listen to anyone or otherwise and the moment you find someone who genuinely agrees and you will, trust......... make sure you believe it. And WAH LAH! your beautiful. My father always told me, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” It’s not that we’re all equally beautiful.... it’s just someone will find you uniquely beautiful. And even then, you still have to be beautiful on the inside... so that’s where your focus should be. Outer beauty will follow. And so will others.

The most interesting takeaway from this documentary is that in poor countries - it is enviable to look fatter. Skinniness is associated with poverty, weakness and disease. Whereas in western countries, we are so rich, the quantity of food and health people have does not usually relate to wealth or financial success. Skinniness is associated with athleticism, good health, dancers, models, beautiful, rich people. I can understand their perspective and the bad connotations of being skinny in their country. EVERYONE has to strive for something, believing it will give them what they want. This is just the truth in their society.

Was wondering if I would see a comment like this anywhere on here. I suppose its because I have been studying anthropology, but I was surprised the reporter was unable to remove her own biases from the documentary. Though I understand that according to western values and medicine, what they are doing is unhealthy and even cruel (the force feeding), not everyone in the world has the same morals we do (hence different cultures exist), and there are some groups that do not believe in western medicine at all, so citing WHO guidelines like they are universally understood and accepted isn't really appropriate. You hit the nail on the head, here where poverty is rife, weight is equivocated with wealth, as if you are fat, then you must have money because you can clearly afford to feed yourself. It's like the equivalent of driving a fancy car, wearing designer clothes, or having a big house in western society. It actually wasn't so different in western society a couple of hundred years ago, but looking at us today you would never guess it.

Very nice observation! However @Happy Horse is right. I study public health, and for sure "trends" is an important part of peoples weight. However, all over the world weight and health does have a correlation with finances and success: In countries considered rich, the richest are usually more healthy (and skinnier), while the poorer people are more often overweight (and have other health related issues). In countries considered poor, the rich are usually overweight and unhealthy, while the poorer class have a more healthy weight (of course, some is unfortunately dangerously underweight as well). So actually - healthy eating does relate to "social status" even in a rich country. There are a lot of reasons for this of course, but in short rich countries have a lot of "fat" foods for cheap, like takeaway and meat/high calorie food, while lean meat, fruit and veg is expensive. If you are poorer you might also have to work more, and spend less time getting the right amount of exercise. While if you are richer and have a higher education, choosing "good" food (while all food can be considered healthy in right amount) is easier because you can afford it and you might have more time and money to exercise. In poor countries, high-calorie food usually is a lot more expensive, and there is little information about healthy eating. So even if you are wealthy and can afford high calorie food, you might not really understand the consequences unhealthy eating have. Of course a lot more than food makes your health better or worse, like smoking/drinking/drug abuse, living conditions, air quality etc. It would be nice if one day everyone would be able to have good health despite wealth and finances, but it's not like that at all.. On the bright side, when you are aware of this, you can make actions in your local community based on the general health there!

I see alot of immigrants that has come to my country and many of their women are fat and I wondered how that culd be since they come from less wealthy circumstances... I guess this video explains that a bit. I guess it makes sense why poor people prefer fatness and wealthy people prefer skinny. We want what we don't have. To us fatness is a rising epidemic, while in poor countries starving is an epidemic, so ofc we will see those bad things as ugly because we put our own emotional experience into it. But the best is to just lie at a healthy BMI ofcourse. Not too skinny, not too fat. But these women are probably not that well informed on that matter.

Makes sense if you think about it - if you have something, that's not widely available, you must be rather wealthy or attractive to others. In poor countries, where people starve on the street, being fat shows you are rich enough to afford food. In developed countries, where any food and especially fast food is widely available, being slim means you are educated enough to know how to feed your body correctly.
@0neLiners3 жыл бұрын
In history, that was exactly the case. For rich white men and women, being fat showed you were wealthy because you could afford plenty of food.

It depends, in a the poor country where you have to buy at a market you probably don’t have enough money so if you’re poor you can’t afford food so you’re likely to be on the skinny side the rich in a poor country most likely have more weight since they have money so that forms how they view beauty and it makes sense

@@radicalracc5918 depending on your genetics and what quality of food you have available to you for the amount you can afford, depending on your region fresh Vegetables might not even be affordable. It also depends on where you live as each region has their own "diet" and therefore different calories per meal (I mean regional food, using the ingredients that are most widely used because of availability). It also widely depends on if they even have the time to work out or even spare for themselves. For some people all they can really do exercise wise is choose the "non lazy" options of things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator for example.

When will we stop hurting people especially women in the name of tradition. I've been binging these videos for hours. It's almost always women, selling virgin women at the bride market, kidnapping them to marry them, not allowing them sexual education or contraceptives leading to pregnancies at 12-13. "Period huts" that are actually cow sheds. Seriously when do traditions hurt men.

@Nick F a lot of the things you are describing are due to a hyper masculine culture. Women don't incite wars or perform circumcision, nor hate their boys for having feminine traits. Fact is that a male-based society doesn't work. Society should lift up everyone.
@Beanhill_945 жыл бұрын
@Nick F I'm a third world bitch dude. From where I'm standing from women face more in the name of culture. I've faced more in the name of culture. I'm considered lucky because my parents educated me. I'm considered lucky that my parents will look for a family that will allow me to work when they arrange my marriage. And I never said traditions don't hurt men. I said they hurt women more. And I'm talking about Traditions. Like religious and cultural stuff that people cling to because it's their culture. So come and talk to me when your 19 year old friends gets pulled out of college by her dad so that she can be married off. Has that happened to you, cause that culture thing happens all the time where I'm from. alright. And if you care about the things you mentioned only if and when someone mentions troubles women face then you're not a real Ally to the men as well.
@Beanhill_945 жыл бұрын
@@darthdanriea2590 you're right. And some of the things he's talking about are so American???? Not the child solider stuff. But that is not a result of culture. That's a result of the world and the wars men start in their country or between countries. And not letting a man cry is an American thing. Those things can be fixed. What he is not understanding is that people cling to their traditions in these modern times. And why? Because their honour and position in society is tied to it. Basically they hurt their daughters due to honour. And hey I'm from India. Women get killed to protect a family's honour. From where I'm standing traditions majorly hurt women.
@darthdanriea25905 жыл бұрын
@@Beanhill_94 yea the "meninist" movement (putting it in quotes because there is no official word for it) is strong here is America, obviously the guy is American. Not talking about or trying to bash him specifically but the irony of the movement is they try to counter feminism without realizing that real feminism benefits everyone. And it's true a lot of so-called "traditions" really only put people down. And societies that cling to these traditions start falling behind in every aspect of life. It really sucks that they're continuing such things in India and other places.

Watching this made me realize how blessed I am to be born in a family and in a society who accepts who I really am. I can't imagine being forced-fed only to be married at a very young age. It's so sad to watch these young girls being problematic about beauty and marriage instead of enjoying their childhood. And here I am complaining about my body and trying to lose some weight. We should really love ourselves more and we should be grateful of everything that we have because while we despair about what we already have, some people wishes to have a life same as ours.
