I have always yearned for a deeper understanding of the scriptures and was so gratified when I took my first Institute class. I then thought that everyone should be in the Institute, and when I saw God's prophet announce Come Follow Me, I knew that wish had come true. But what I never hoped for or imagined were podcasts like your Unshaken podcast where I could drink as deeply as possible and be fully quenched. I feel as if the words of our Savior to the Samaritan at the well have been fulfilled in my lifetime. "...but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4 :13) Thank you, my brother Jared, for pulling up the vessel of living water for me that I, too, may drink eternal life.

Thank you, for sharing the hard work you have put into searching the scriptures. Because of Dyslexia, I did not learn to read until I was 21. The spelling and grammar are with the help of Grammarly. For most of my life, I have learned the scripture and all that I know of God's word with the help of listening to them, because of another blessing from God and all those who are willing to serve God and narrate into some type of recorder. Mathew was the easiest book for me to read and comprehend when I was a teenager, so it is my favorite book when telling of the life of Jesus Christ. After I got married I took weekly Fonics lessons from a teacher who taught adults to read after her long day with kids. I hold a spot in my heart for her, and her talents, and willing to go beyond what most of us call a full day of work. After learning to read I wanted to read and learn the book of Revelation. I could not fully understand it. I found and ordered CDs of the Book of Revelation and an explanation of it. I loaned them out to a friend and she lost them. I am trying to find them. The Author made it so easy to get the meaning of the book. I do not remember the Authors' names, and I have tried for years to find the CDs but nothing has come close to it. One of the author's stories was that it took 10 years to find a teacher willing to spend a semester on the Book of Revelation because it is about the end and most people do not want to hear how the world ends. I am telling you this because it is one of the most important books in the Bible. People do not understand that it is not meant to scare them it is meant to teach them what to watch for and see the second time Jesus Christ comes bringing the hoast of Heaven down to help with the last battle. To help those of us who have worked so hard to walk the path of Jesus Christ. Please if you know of the CDs and where I can find a new copy please help. 2nd please do not shorten or cut back when you come to teach the book. I know you do not do this for money, If I had any to give I would. Again thank you. You and your family, are in my prayers.

Thank you for another wonderful lesson. Recently, I came across an article that says humans need at least one 8 second hug every day. We don’t always get that from those around us. 2 Nephi 1:15 is the ultimate ‘8 second hug’ from our Savior! He has redeemed us, we can see His Glory, and He will encircle us eternally with the arms of His love! I added this one to my list of memorized scriptures. How blessed we are!

Some of our youth struggle with standards, modesty, the natural man, and “boring church.” Thinking about the “10 Commandments” that Jesus volunteered for & fulfilled, might help them while partaking of the Sacrament (this is who I want to align myself with) & being a witness of the Savior at all times, and in all places. Many people are searching for the truth; however youth born under the covenant may not realize what they have until after Yielding to the adversary. The current 12th Int’l Art Competition has great inclusive images of Jesus’ atonement covering all nations, kindreds, tongues & people. Jared, you are essential to many of us growing stronger in Christ. Thank you!

Re. Luke 4:6-Although Satan claims to be the god of this world, he has no real power or glory except as we give it to him (see Rev. 13:2-4) by yielding to his temptations. Only God has all power and all glory, all of which he is holding in reserve for us as we accept the atonement of Christ and persevere to the end. Thank you, as always, Bro. H., for your insights. 1:18:19 My mind goes to Elder Holland’s speech entitled “The Inconvenient Messiah”. He touches on this exact same idea when teaching about The Savior resisting these temptations; God has freely given us blessings beyond our comprehension, and they are ours to receive, ONLY when we receive them in His way, and in His time, instead of taking Satan’s “bogus bread” right now when we think it most convenient.

You always give me so much to ponder.❤ I have told my children for years that Mathew 28:18 is one of the most powerful scriptures because it’s Christ testifying that he did everything Fathers way and our Father gave him everything. Everything Satan tried to take, everything he wanted so desperately to gain through his own selfish means and way was given liberally to Christ because he simply did as our Father asked. Christ sought responsibility and received reward. Satan sought reward and received reprimand. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

I really felt uplifted by your description of the "If you are the son of God..." taunt from Satan. For me it takes the form of "Who are you to ____?" I've felt driven to work on solutions to a troubled family dynamic in an unconventional way. And this is what I feel in terms of doubt: "Who are you to think that you can heal your family?" And my answer can only be that I qualify for miracles and tender mercies through Jesus' enabling power. I am a daughter of God and I've done my best to qualify for inspiration. What I don't hear Satan ever do is talk (honestly) about who he is. Who is he to make me question myself, anyway? 🤔😕 Also, thanks for the blitzkrieg segment. That helps A LOT. I think I prefer the phraseology, "I am recovering from being an alcoholic." A lot more words. But leaves more room for reconceptualuzing the self. I am, in fact, a recovering sugaroholic and I have been relapsing a lot. I have come to accept that the same sad feelings I feed and appease with sugar are some of the same ones fed with alcohol. But I'm recovering!

Thank you for all your hard work and preparation and making the scriptures come to life! I particularly liked the way that you talked about how Satan tries to bring us down and Christ and God work to bring us up. I also like that you talked about how Satan only has three tools to use to try to get us to fall. I wonder why that is? Which one would jealousy fit into? Another podcast I regularly listen to, I found it interesting that in the third temptation Satan was trying to get Christ to be prideful and think that he already had all those things and that Satan was dumb for thinking that Christ would bow himself down to him? Anyway, great job! You gave me a lot to think about.

Mitkav was used, as I understand, for cleansing, for women after their monthly menis. And also before marriage for both bride and groom. Only converts were "baptized" into the Covent. John's use of this cleansing process was to announce the new covenant with Christ, just as we use baptism today.

I am amazed at the personal time and effort you put into this series as I know you are also teaching full time at BYU. I recently read the Brothers Karamazov. In Book V Chapter V, The Grand Inquisitor, there is a great treatise on the temptations of Christ. It is written in some sarcasm, but there is much insight to gain. This is a short snippet, “There are three powers, three powers alone, able to conquer and to hold captive for ever the conscience of these impotent rebels for their happiness-those forces are miracle, mystery and authority. . . In bread there was offered Thee an invincible banner; give bread, and man will worship thee, for nothing is more certain than bread. . . and the dread spirit set Thee on the pinnacle of the temple. . . Thou didst know then that in taking one step, in making one movement to cast Thyself down, Thou wouldst be tempting God and have lost all Thy faith in Him, and wouldst have been dashed to pieces against that earth which Thou didst come to save. . . that last gift he offered Thee, showing Thee all the kingdoms of the earth. . . “Why didst Thou reject that last gift? Hadst Thou accepted that last counsel, Thou wouldst have accomplished all that man seeks on earth” Excerpt From The Brothers Karamazov Fyodor Dostoyevsky Sorry this is so long. But it really helped me understand more about why these three temptations. You can read just the chapter without the whole book in the study of temptations

Question regarding jesus's 40 days of fasting would that automatically mean no food or drink for the duration of those days all of those days? Or would it be 40 days of a Jewish fast meaning 24 hours of no eating or drinking and then at that point eating and drinking and then starting another day of fasting? I mean Christ had a physical body. As a simple human being I have gone without food for 14 days. I could have gone more because I didn't feel hungry and I had lots of energy and cognitive function. But I couldn't have gone without water that long.

When the Apostle Paul said, "If the dead rise not at all, why baptize we for the dead?" was that referring to baptism for the dead after Christ's death and resurrection, or was that practiced in ancient days as in Solomon's temple which had the brazen sea which seems like a temple baptismal font? I always wondered about that.
@rconger24 Жыл бұрын
@Robert Park Manookin Jr. - Has your question been answered? You have a good one: If the early Saints of the proto-Christian church from 34AD to maybe 70AD were able to set up the ordinances of The New Covenant in The Holy Temple? I suppose you may be referring to some hints in the NT about the Mount Transfiguration? OR In the writings of Peter? OR maybe more I don't know about. Maybe there were things that did not make it into the Bible when they began to canonize the various collections of books? Also I am curious if it might be your father who has significant contributions the Hymnbook? Also if you know my friend James Manookin, Orem UT? - Warm regards.

00:05:48, never thought of this. 00:33:22 00:45:40 01:10:08 These temptations reveal so much of Satan’s character. 01:11:24 I’d never read the JST on this before! The second temptation is interesting because Jesus actually DID jump from the highest pinnacle of the temple to a mortal state (in a symbolic sense). The differences between the two descents are instructive.

When Jesus fasted, did he abstain from both water and food? I'm interested in doing an extended fast, but I am worried about not drinking water. Also, did 40 days mean a precise number of days or just an extended period?
@Unshaken Жыл бұрын
Excellent questions. The 40 days could have been literal or figurative. If literal, then it was most likely a fast from food alone (though water is pretty rare in that area during certain times of the year); if figurative, then it hearkens to the other "40's" that represent purification and cleansing (the Flood in the days of Noah, and the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness after the Exodus). If you're going to do an extended fast, I would definitely keep drinking water!

People who go to a fasting facility to do a 30-40 day water fast report that after the first 3 or 4 days their hunger subsides. There isn't any food (only water) around them at the facility. There isn't any food to entice. I suspect it might have been similar for Jesus. Assuming He spent most time communing with His Father or angels, He wouldn't have paid much attention to anything else. We don't know the time span for these temptations. Did they happen all in one day, over a week, or a month? The more time in between the "temptations" the more time Jesus had to prepare for His mission. These "temptations" don't fit the requirements set by James- lusts and enticements. James also says that God cannot be tempted by evil. So how does that apply to Christ?

Jesus brought in the new covenant, He sacrificed His life on the cross and the old law was obsolete, and grace was ushered in by our Savior Jesus Christ. Satan did not want this to happen, so he confronted Jesus, but Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, having Gods Word, the Holy Spirit and the Angels, Jesus was able to combat the devil. The devil has no power over Jesus the Christ. There is nothing said in the bible about John the Baptist having the keys, it is Peter who will open the door of the Kingdom to those who respond to faith, while at the same time he will keep it shut for those who do not. The keys of the Kingdom are a gift from God to all His people. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold all things have become new. 2 Cor 5: 16-17 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us His ministry. It is all said in the bible, in God's Word, no additions are needed to prove otherwise. Mormonism does cherry pick and choose scripture in the bible to twist to their own doctrine and beliefs. 2 Peter 3:16 people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
@davidmoore1248 Жыл бұрын
We believe the Bible to be the word of God. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and is also the word of God. You don't have to believe me though. Try the promise of James 1:5-6. A similar promise is found in Moroni 10:4-6. God will answer the sincere seeker through the Holy Ghost. Have a blessed day.

I could just imagine Satan being so irritated at you for your message, for exposing him for the fraud that he is. He is fussing and musing now over how he can bring you down. “Screw tape letters”. I too chuckled when old scratch tried to offer him everything if he would worship him. I sure wish as we listen to or read in our own scripture library that it could just have the JST already inserted.
