I loved the fact that the shepherds and the wise men were guided by one specific star like none other, it is what the Savior is to all of us, being guided by Him like none other. By letting ourself be guided by Him, we will one day soon be able to be at His feet and worship Him........that is the Star that I want to wish upon!

Hello Brother Halverson, I am grateful that you’re still giving such inspirational lessons & sharing great experiences that are so comforting & uplifting to me. Only 2 months after returning from our Kirtland Ohio Historic Sites Mission, my sweetheart & eternal companion passed away unexpectedly! It’s been very difficult, but with the Savior’s love, my family’s support, & the understanding from church & community friends, I have started my path to healing ( never forgetting). May the Lord continue to bless & guide you & your family in this great work. ❤

I loved what you said about questions! So often I really don’t know what kind of questions to ask. When you talked about how so much of what the Savior said went over the heads of his disciples and apostles, even his mother and foster father didn’t properly understand the meaning of his words. I though how true is that? Especially since most of the time when I study the gospel I don’t even properly know what or when to ask a question, so what else am I missing? This is why I am so grateful to your podcast. You really take time and savor each story, each chapter and verse. On my own I know I don’t get that much out of the scriptures. But hearing you expound on them is such an enriching experience. Thank you for your dedicated service.

I love in that song where it states, ”joyful and triumphant.” Sometimes I know things can get hard but with Christ as our center, no matter what comes, through His crowning Atonement, we can and should be joyful and triumphant. For Christ has overcome the world. For if God be with us, who could be against us.

It hit me when listening to your podcast and you were reading about Herod telling the wiseman to go find the Christ child and then return and report because he wanted to worship the Christ child that that sentiment in and of itself betrayed his true intentions. We can’t rely on someone else to do the searching for us. That’s our responsibility. That’s our oil for our own lamp that can’t be flippantly given to another…Herod wanted to take the easy way out. I am responsible for my own searching and worshipping to find and adore the King of the Jews.

Something NEW prepared me in studying Malachi with you at the end of the OT Brother Halverson. A NEW burning of the heart. A burning that I haven’t felt since my conversion 50 years ago . It’s a phenomenon to me . A NEW awakening to prepare me for the NEW TESTAMENT. Yes , I could testify of Jesus of the Book of Mormon. And now …. I am being given a NEW testimony of Jesus of the Old & New Testament. I hope I’m making sense . I always thought with my brain that I had a testimony of the Old & New Testament. Now , I can recognize the gift of the burning heart for the Old & New Testament’s which is stronger and more powerful. God really does testify of truth in the most and unique yet familiar ways to our own understanding with the greatest love and patience possible. Anyway… I needed to testify of this great love that Jesus has for us all and all glory to Him with thanks to you . Kathy

Here is a wonderful quote by Neal A. Maxwell about the Star over Bethlehem: “Recall the new star that announced the birth at Bethlehem? It was in its precise orbit long before it so shone. We are likewise placed in human orbits to illuminate.” How wonderful and merciful our God is to prepare the star over Bethlehem millennia ago , just at the right time and right place. I couldn’t agree with Elder Maxwell more that we are placed in to peoples lives at the right time and place to touch and comfort and strengthen them. God is good! He is so faithful!

I really liked learning about the added JST verses at the end of Matthew 2. I never pictured it so vividly: How Jesus learned from His human parents daily living but also of His identity; how He learned about Himself as He read the Torah-by Himself, not by what the synagogue teachers told Him. How eager He must have felt to just get the go ahead to start.

I just thought I would share a similar experience I had with my father and curfews. Mine, also was midnight. But in this case I was 20 years old and had finished two years at BYU prior to my going on my mission. The day before we (my family and I) were going to drive the 800 miles to Salt Lake so I could enter the Mission Home (yes I am that old), I took a girl I had been dating out on a date. After we were done with the date (I don't have any idea what we did) we sat in the car and talked. We talked and we talked until two in the morning. I realized what time it was, took her home and then drove home. When I got home, my dad was just getting into the car to 'drive around' and see if he could figure out where I was. When he saw me pull into the driveway, he got out of the car and went into the house. When I got into the house, all he said was "Is everything all right?" We both knew what he meant, and I said "Yes', and that was the last thing that was ever said about it. I went to the Mission Home, and served an honorable mission to the British Mission. As you can tell, I haven't forgotten that experience in the 56+ years since ti happened. We had a wonderful experience.

As I was thinking on the scripture when Jesus was growing up: “for he needed not that any man should teach him”… A clear thought came to my mind; that just as Joseph Smith was taught by many of the noble & valiant Angels, Moroni, Peter, James, John etc (not to mention being visited by God the Father & His Beloved Son, Jesus the Christ… The young Begotten Son of God would have also been taught by his Father, & Adam & Enoch & Noah & Abraham & quite possibly Book of Mormon Prophets 😇 Thank You Brother Halversen for your insights & your taking the time to study with us vs by vs as much as possible. I had an institute professor at Ricks College that made the Old Testament come alive for me! You have that same gift & also the gift to help me see how scripture actually is relevant in our lives today 😇

I have always believed that because of Nephi on his knees pleading for the SIGN to be given- in fact that sign of the birth of the Christ child is the only thing that would save the Believers- because they would be put to death the following day… Nephi’s heartfelt prayer put Mary into labor at that moment and the birth of her baby Child that night created the Sign in the Americas that even on the day of His birth he was already the “Savior”-even the Savior of all the Believers in the New World. To me that part of the story rings so true and seems to often be overlooked.

Maybe the discussion of the star that led to where Jesus was, can be compared to the cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night that led and protected the children of Israel on their journey out of Egypt. It's trivial to say that God does not conform to our understanding of natural laws; as his ways are higher than our ways.....

Thank You for your in-depth understanding and sharing from the scriptures. I've often wondered about those "Wise Men", were they actually believers from other genetic lines of the priesthood, rather similar to Moses' father-in-law, faithful believers who are not a direct part of the chosen line, and thus having righteous influence and revelation regarding the birth of the Messiah, instead of secular sages following a star.

I had to laugh when you sarcastically said that your toilet papering could be an act of service. When my mom was in Young Women's it was a time when families were chosen at random to live off of whatever they had for a month with no notice in their ward. Their family was chosen and they were doing just fine.... except toilet paper. The Young Women kindly toilet papered their house and mom and her family carefully gathered it all up and rerolled it so that they could have toilet paper! See, if carefully chosen, it can be an act of service!

The Lord was divine upon conception and before, John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word is God. Jesus had no veil upon Him, he already had the glory of God. He had to mature as a human and he had to compensate His greatness due to him being in the flesh, but he was always divine. The scriptures are the word of God, with great power in the scriptures, the Holy Spirit behind every word and should never be changed. John 1:14 And His fullness we have all received grace for grace. but grace and truth came through Christ. Christ was full of grace and truth!! He was glorified!!

I love the interpretation of Nazareth to be branch, especially with the dual fulfillment in both Isaiah and Jeremiah. You pointed it out in the Isaiah passage, but I noticed as you spoke that Jeremiah’s prophecies also talk about the branch being raised up unto David. I feel that this could refer to Bethlehem, the city of David, as well as the Jewish royalty aspect of that phrase. Also, many thanks for walking us through We Three Kings. I now have a new favorite Christmas song and I need to find a good version that includes all the verses because I don’t ever remember hearing them all sung or performed. Also, wowza, is it too late to submit that for consideration to the new hymn book?! We NEED that one. Many, many thanks to you and your family for your individual and collective sacrifices untold to consecrate time to share your insights each week!! I wonder if any of those men at the temple when Jesus was 12yrs old were still around when Jesus started His ministry? Did those same men talk about Him after that early experience to any younger men learning in the temple? Would they have remembered Jesus name? Could those memories have stirred up jealousies? I feel the same way about not knowing the questions. But I am studying and growing 🤞

Ok. A few things come to mind . I’ll mention the first and most significant. I see a parallel between the direction the wise men were told to go and the instruction 2 Old Testament prophets received - to not return the way they came. The symbolism is the same for them as it is for us. Once you have come to know Christ, leave differently than you came. Second, has to do with frankincense and myrrh. When ingested, both have medicinal qualities and both have the capacity to pass the blood-brain barrier. Frankincense has tissue regenerative properties, and myrrh shrinks tumors. Aside from the Royal significance of these 2 gifts, what better gifts to offer a nomadic family who likely wouldn’t have access to medical care?!

Bro Halverson, Absolutely love all your lessons and the frequency with which I still get Eureka moments from you! And years ago, my now 50yo son challenged me to document my assertion that Christ had attained the age of thirty before he began his ministry. I recall that I had done so through James E. Talmage's masterpiece "Jesus The Christ." I can no longer reconstruct that fact. Can you help? FYI, I have researched and retained the Section of Hammurabi's code (§188) that delineates the requirements for an adoptive son to become a legal heir. Nice to know Joseph satisfied that requirement (by the adoptive-son joining the father's guild through the father's providing a full apprenticeship training for the son) in order to ensure that Jesus could not have been denied David's throne through a legal technicality! Just for fun, I have also wondered whether you read "The Age of Revelation" by Elias Boudineaux in conjunction with your dissertation? I consider it a real gem, especially since it was written to protect his vulnerable daughter! Always, to protect our youth!!

Lots of thoughts and questions. First, the star. Many years ago I had a coworker who was an amateur astronomer. He had a program on his computer that could show the stars, planets etc. for any time period and geographic location. I forget exactly what I gave him but something like. Put in the coordinates Central America, 3 AD, April 6. I forget how many but it looked like all the planets where aligned. Second, scribes in the temple when 12 year old Jesus was teaching. Surely someone wrote what this boy Jesus was asking, saying, sharing. For 5 days they sat and marvelled. Someone must have documented the events. What happened to those memories. Where are the witnesses Luke was seeking? Did Jesus not write while he was growing up and studying the Old Testament? Did Mary write? If yes, what happened to those records. Thank you for sharing your insights and knowledge. It helps me to understand these stories and put into context.

With respect to Jesus being left behind in Jerusalem, at this point He likely had a few younger siblings that Mary and Joseph were caring for. They likely assumed their oldest and no doubt very responsible son was with the extended family somewhere in the caravan.

So much tradition has clouded the story as it actually reads in Matthew 2, and as augmented by JST. We sing that the wise men followed the star westward (We Three Kings) to Jerusalem and asked Herod where the king of the Jews was born. But careful reading of the text indicates they did not follow the star to Jerusalem, and they did not go to Herod. They asked about in Jerusalem first. Herod heard about them and called them to him. They saw the star in the east and knew to go to Jerusalem. They went, and when they arrived, they asked about. Herod calls his people together, then he demands the wise men come to him. When the wise men then departed to Bethlehem, behold to their astonishment, the star appeared and led them south to Bethlehem and to the the young child. We can ask so many questions about the wise men: How many were there? Did they all come from the same place? How far did they come? How long did it take? And so on….. We know of Samuel’s prophecy. What other prophecies were there that we do not yet know about? I believe, when the details of the story are known to the world, we will be amazed at how far off the mark are the traditions forged over the centuries.

By the time Jesus was 12, he probably had other siblings, so it may have been common to refer to his parents as mother and father, and not mother and Joseph, for ease of conversation with him and his siblings. I feel a little bit badly to refer to Joseph as a step-father, or foster father. We are sons and daughters of a Heavenly Father, then our earthly fathers and mothers (who are eternally our siblings) are just practicing with Heavenly Father's children before, someday, they have their literal, spiritual children directly. But, none-the-less, they are co-parenting with our Heavenly Parents. Another thought, I was adopted, and although my adopted father was not my same blood, he was still my earthly father. I hope you can understand, and can hear a gentle voice in my dialog. But, I totally understand that Jesus' father was truly our Heavenly Father and that is very important to point out. With care. Sister Ramona Hudson

It's interesting, the calculations by Michael Molnar are the Bethlehem star appeared in 6BC. Herod died in 4BC - the question remains, how long did it take Herod to figure out the wise men weren't coming back? He had to have died shortly after he ordered the slaughter of the babies two and under.

Gerald... when you talked about Joseph and Mary searching for Jesus,,, could Christ's question to his mother be "How did you search for me? Did you inquire of the Lord?" Maybe she may have known where he was and would not have had to "search" for him as long as they did. Heavenly Father may have made it known unto her? Just a mother's perspective on the situation. Lol

I heard recently that Jesus wasn’t even born December 25th. That it was originally a Pagan holiday. All Christian holidays were originally Pagan days…. Thoughts?

I think most Christian religions agree that Christ was most likely born in the springtime. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes that Joseph Smith has revealed that it was April 6. Someone stop me if I'm spreading false doctrine!

On the star, how about it was just a miracle? A miracle less marvelous than the forgiveness of sins and healing the blind, but a miracle nonetheless.

A little harsh on Joseph lol... He was his "Earthly" father. He loved him so. Nothing wrong with that 🙏

I love your insight and perspective. Since you mentioned "We Three Kings", if you haven't heard it yet, I thought you would appreciate this rendition kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnvYp5erjdFrhdk

Magnificent recording! Thank you, Grandpa Roach! All seven verses of this song were included in the 1955 Church Hymnal, which let me memorize the carol in my youth. It helped me follow the lyric through the rich harmonies and the fuguel braidings found in this arrangement. TYVM!! 🙏💕

It would be even more exciting if this man also included Book of Mormon references about the signs from the New World, the Americas.

Loved the video as always! I’m curious about your take on the theory of Myrrh being more about anointing Christ as the Son of God than about his sacrifice and death as explained in the video below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYPQp3p5fZlprJo

I think Jesus had an IQ that was off the charts. The jews are very intelligent. So put his thin veil + high IQ= God among us!
