@mechanicjamz that was not why the system was created and it wasn't to give a helping hand. If anything, they're trying to increase the age. The system was created to keep some on the bottom and those still working, to prevent wages lower than the rising cost of living. At the same time, none of the president's are successful raising the amount that FICA has to be paid. Any income over $168,600 is EXEMPT from FICA while the first $168,600 is. These co-presidents will do nothing to change that.

What is very unjust is that government workers at all levels get pensions for life that are way above social security that our taxes pay for, but we only get social security for life when we reached eligible ages. I knew a couple older people who lost their investments and had to work until they died at 80. Social Security invests in the government and as such is insured. Your 401s and Roths are not. Savings are FDIC insured up to 100,000 per account. During the Great Depression my father graduated and joined the National Guard. One of their jobs was removing people that had starved or frozen to death out of alleys and under bridges. There was that much poverty and death nationwide. People lost everything from the crash, depression deepened by tariffs, and the human-made Dust Bowl. We are repeating this history. This is why social security retirement insurance was created in 1934 - a safety measure against such things. It's foolish to believe you're financially infallible. No one is. Entire countries crash.

I can attest to the several hour wait time on the phone, attempting to make an appointment to sign up for my SS. I decided to sign up online. I am healthy, past my FRA, not a widow, and I was the higher income worker in my household. I am still working with private insurance, and was only required to sign up for Medicare . The idea that Congress "stole" this money is akin to misunderstanding how a certificate of deposit (CD) at a bank works. If you purchase a $10,000 CD at your local bank that's yielding 4%, your bank isn't going to set your cash in a vault and let it collect dust. Rather, it's going to put that money to work via loans to generate a yield in excess of 4%. Your money hasn't been stolen by the bank. It's still fully accounted for, and the bank can make good on your interest payments and principal when the time comes. Likewise, the federal government isn't going to let $2.721 trillion in excess cash sit around and lose out to the prevailing rate of inflation. This cash is invested in government bonds (as required by law), which generates much-needed interest for Social Security. If the program was no longer allowed to purchase U.S. Treasuries, it would lose out on one of its three sources of income, leading to sweeping benefit cuts at an accelerated pace.

The theft of SSA moneys, which were supposed to be untouchable because they were not part of the general fund, were taken as a "Loan" by the Congress. The easiest and most reasonable quick fix to implement is to tax every dollar earned. I once, for a short time, earned over the (then) cap of 106k and was shocked that my FICA tax stopped late in the year. This tax would be almost unnoticed by high income earners and reap huge benefits for the program overall. Fix this with one swipe of the pen!

I am from Australia & senior citizens are paid around $2400 per month plus added benefits...no car registration or license (the government pay for it)...they also get allowance for housecleaning, landscaping, repairman, & public transportation is free....Australia is a small country 26million ppl....help me understand how the US govt makes it's people pay into social security that's worth crap when you retire....it is a disgrace!!!!

Why would anyone in power that is rich worry about Social Security because they will never have to worry about living off Social Security? This would take a class action lawsuit against the federal government in order to for us to get more of our funds that we paid in all those years. I have a major issue with the Medicaid Spendown !! I am disabled and have a dual policy . The Medicaid side offers me a Spendown with a monthly payment of over 370 a month ! Who in the heck comes up with this ? I make 1500 on my SS and they think I can afford that ? Who comes up with this? I have never been able to afford a spendown or pay any medical bills in that amount ! Who do I talk to? They send me back and forth between the departments. Its awful. Ive never had bad credit in my life, but I cant afford any medical bills either.

When I retired at 65, 7 years ago, social security answered the phone after a couple rings, took my info and the checks hit my account within 30 days! No problem w/ them...EVER!
