Airlines overbook all the time and innocent people kicked off planes so late comers can have their seats......or some VIP has turned up. I've seen it again and again. Don't tell me it doesn't happen with cruise lines.

I had this happen to me with Carnival waaaaayyyyy back in 1996 for my honeymoon cruise. My husband and I were denied boarding. We were told to stand off to the side while the situation was investigated. Unbeknownst to us, American Express had approved the charge for the cruise, then reversed it. We were not notified that the charge had been reversed nor were we notified that Carnival had canceled our reservation. So we fly to Port Canaveral with our boarding documents only to be told that not only was our reservation canceled, that the ship was completely booked. We contacted American Express and they advised that there had been a “glitch” on their end and they apologized. Carnival ended up having a group of guests “no show” and we were able to get their cabin 30 minutes before the ship sailed. I was bummed because we had booked a balcony suite but ended up with a category 4 inside cabin. Carnival understood the snafu and gave us onboard credit, decorated the room and they made sure that we were well taken care of. I am wondering if this family’s situation is an American Express situation…

Yes but this is 2023 and you can see on your phone if something has been reversed or denied. She most likely has a history of fraudulent charge backs and the cruise recognized her pattern and gave them the boot. When you dispute a charge, the merchant usually loses

Thats NOT what happened here. Had their reservation been cancelled they would have been told as soon as they arrived at the cruise terminal. They would not have been able to check their bags because they were not on the cruise manifest.

The mother likely paid for a large chunk of the cruise . Young people do tend to shrug their shoulders and walk away. While those wjth more life experience get angry about this occurring to young folks.

The girl disputed the charge and thought she was getting on the cruise for free. She cpuldve very easily showed the mother her american express account which shows all her disputes. If she didnt dispute it would show but i bet u that girl disputed charge (pribably got refunded) and tried to get on cruise anyway and got caught doing it.

Jay, I'm a loyal NCL cruiser- took 2 this year. AND I just got off a Royal. To say that alone is suspicious is off. Plenty of folks sail with several lines. Nothing nefarious about that. But here, this is one of the many reasons we only book through the cruise line themselves and NOT an outside agency. The outside agency owes you nothing, but at the very least, the cruise line wants to try to accommodate and serve you. LIke always getting insurance, we always book through the line. More expensive sure, but peace of mind has a value.

You can have your cake and eat it too. You can book through a travel agent and get their benefits; lower price , stateroom credit, premium dining or whatever. Then you can access you reservation on the cruise line's website, check the status and if you want book add on packages and shore excursions you can do so directly with the cruise line. You can buy insurance with directly with the cruise line or the travel agent if they offer it. Of course this can all be done with the cruise line's 800 number if you don't like computers. The only thing you might not be able to do with the cruise line once you've booked with the travel agent is cancel the cruise. You'll probably be sent back to the TA for that.

I always book through the cruise line too, but the prices are pretty much the same as some of these sites that offer deals. I always feel like the less people involved the less chance for a mistake. We prefer RC & have never had a problem even the few times we had to cancel & rebook.

I read allegedly the mother was booked in the cabin with them but she didn’t go and that the kids are under 21. Since the mother didn’t show, there was no one over the age of 21 in the cabin so the cruise company wouldn’t let them board. Not sure if this is true. Just what I read on another channel.

If a room becomes available, a couple from a lower class room may have been upgraded to this now unoccupied room. That is not an unusual occurrence And has happened to me. What was mentioned here was the possibility of this couple being on a “deny boarding“ list for past indiscretions. Those thoughts crossed many minds here making comments.

This happened to my daughter, with a hotel. Using a 3rd party site The hotel overbooked And they did not honor the 3rd party guest. In other words she couldn’t stay at that hotel. The 3rd party company found her another hotel. But this is crazy for a cruise line. I will never use a 3rd party company. Because of the experience we had.👍🏾✌🏾

I had the same thing happen to me at a hotel we booked via 3rd party - we didn’t get to our destination until 11:00pm and found ourselves without a room - luckily they were able to find us a room at a nearby hotel but no more 3rd party sites for me

Same happened to us. We got to the hotel and they said they didn't have a room. We had to find another hotel. On top of that when we went to get our refund, the third party site denied us because "the hotel marked us as no show" so we were denied. Never again.

Hotels overbook all the time regardless of whether you book directly with them or through a third party site. The difference is, if you book directly with the hotel, they find you another place to stay. If you book through a third party, you have to deal with them. But in those instances, you are told they overbooked. Supposedly these people aren't being given a reason they were denied boarding.

This is always why you check and go to the cruise lines website a day or two before you cruise and make sure everything is done. Bypass the travel agency and make sure everything's okay with the cruise line. Could have saved him a lot of trouble

@@karyndewit193 If there is fraud on your account or card the bank will dispute it, they give credit to you, and then recover it from the merchant basically charging them to give the money back. It is useful for fraud, but some people take advantage of this by disputing charges which are legit.

One of the things I found interesting information is that the cabin they booked had different passengers in it. Ummmm...sounds like that is why they could not board - because the cruise line cancelled their reservation because of a drink package payment issue and had already put someone else in that cabin. I think the TA dropped the ball as well.

No any unoccupied rooms are given to other customers willing to pay for an upgrade. It’s called “Royal up”

You don't know that! You are getting information 3rd-party. If someone's cruise is cancelled (no show) and the ship has left the port, the room is eligible for an upgrade (paid/comped). Most times many passengers upon arriving go to customer service and ask about upgrade opportunities. If the couple were cancelled due to No Show (mom's words), the room will be made available for an upgrade. Sometimes common sense is more probable than searching for less than likely reasons.

She actually said she sailed on Carnival before. To me it sounds like an over sold sailing. There were people already in their room. They probably targeted them because of their age. Why would they want them to book another sailing? Why not give them their money back? Why won’t RC say why their trip was revoked? Why couldn’t they get their belongings? They just assumed because there was a report on them, that it must have been from a previous Royal sailing. It's also a little strange that they had the same exact issue with Carnival.

That’s what I’m thinking. The only way Royal Caribbean thought they sailed before is if they received their names from the no sail list database that’s shared with all of the top cruise lines. A lot of people don’t realize this database exists.

Here's what's bothering me. The prevailing story is that they were denied boarding because of a chargeback for a drink package. Firstly, a charge back is initiated by the cardholder, not the credit card company. If the credit card company detects fraud its not handled as a chargeback. Secondly, Drink packages are an add on. If we are to believe that this was flagged for fraud by the credit card company, they would flag the "lil $200" as she put it, and not the $4000 cruise purchase. That doesn't make sense to me. Lastly, drink packages are add ons, it doesn't make sense to me that RC would deny boarding because an add on was charged back (which I believe it probably was). It makes sense to me that they would just proceed without the drink package or ask them to pay another way, not cancel their entire sailing. That would be like saying "you tried to purchase an excursion and your card declined so we're cancelling your cruise". Drink packages are an extra feature that is not a part of the standard cruise fare. What does make sense to me, is that Royal denied boarding because THEY spotted some kind of fraud or inconsistency. Maybe it wasn't just the drink package that was charged back like they're telling us or maybe the couple has done fraud before and they've been flagged. Either way I don't believe we're getting the truth here.

@@CJcruisinthat *can* happen on NCL. Yes. But it can NOT happen on Royal. When you purchase a cruise planner item it is added to your CRUISE PLANNER, not your reservation. It’s not a reservation-level item. Check your past Royal and NCL confirmations and you’ll see the difference. That’s not what happened here. Now, if she was flagged for fraud on cruise planner items, then that team may have spoken to reservations and THEY may have flagged their reservation. But CP agents will not ever cancel a cruise. They can’t even do that. The two teams are entirely separate.

Drink packages are add-ons and add-on are handled in the CRUISE MANAGER not in the reservation system. However they WILL cancel your cruise if you don’t pay for the initial cabin costs, which is what I think is actually happening here. I don’t think this has anything to do with any drink package. I think that’s what they’re telling y’all but that’s not the truth. I believe something was up with their cruise fare and their payment. I don’t believe the story they’re telling is the truth.

Hey Guys...she didn't say anything about being denied on this cruise due to a drink package, she was stating that when she cruised on Carnival in the past that she had an issue with an Amex payment for her drink package; stating that it got sorted out with Carnival and all was well. She was showing an example of something that happened on another cruise line, with her Amex card and what the cruise line did/how it was resolved and to show that she had an issue in the past with her Amex. I know...she is difficult to understand, and speaks very fast.

I guess that could seem suspicious, but it’s really not. Inventory on a cruise ship is limited - if someone needs a new room or if Royal can sell an upgrade, they will take ANY available room. So if the kids were denied boarding their room was immediately put back into available inventory. Remember that a cruise line’s entire purpose is to make money. If they can sell a now-empty room you know they will. 😂

All cruisers want to know what happened and what if anything we can do to avoid this mess happening to us. It sounds like something to do with the credit card. Or they had someone with the same name that they had problems with. Some people will dispute credit card charges to try and get things for free.

You hit the nail on the head. The chargeback is the issue, especially with AmEx. When a customer charges back, this creates a huge burden on the merchant and that customer will most certainly be flagged. AmEx and Discover are very aggressive in advocating for their cardholders when the cardholder files a chargeback and the merchant usually is on the losing end. Finally, yes, many people will try to charge back thinking that during the investigation period they can use whatever good or service they charged back. It's a form of fraud that is becoming more common. The more sophisticated merchants are aware of this trend and are fighting back accordingly.

They already said what was wrong. I think I heard the girl say that they ordered a drink package and it was charged back. It didn’t go through. Normally, when that happens, we found out they canceled your cruise. She said that she had cash and another credit card with ID and was willing to pay for it, but they said no you weren’t sailing. Probably because the ship was sold out. That’s why they were offering them a new cruise. They should’ve taken the cruise instead of saying they wanted their cash back. If they took the new cruise, the penalties would not have applied.

Just because they don’t want to have their faces shown on the internet that doesn’t mean they are “afraid” of anything. Lots of young (& old) people would feel too self conscious to appear online and would prefer to have their parent do it for them. My 22 year old daughter has only posted still photos online a few times because of self-consciousness. Maybe you’re right and the mom did pay for the cruise or contributed to it so that’s why she’s handling this issue. Or maybe she just thought she could help her son & his girlfriend because she’s older, has more travel experience, or just life experience. I still sometimes help my (young adult) kids with things that are new to them. Or maybe the mom just thought she could do a better job of explaining their situation. In this video the girlfriend speaks fairly quickly so I found it much it harder to listen to her. I couldn’t follow some of what she was saying. And the son barely said a word. But the mom spoke at what I consider a normal pace.(I also don’t like to listen to super slow talkers.) So I think it’s probably a good thing that the mom is handling this. I wish the other couple that they were traveling with, that were allowed onboard and went on the cruise, had done some more investigating. I don’t remember if it was mentioned in this video or if it was in a previous one, but they said that they saw other passengers come out of the cabin that was originally assigned to the couple that were denied boarding. I wish their friends had knocked on the door and asked the people what their story was - when did they make the reservations, what their name was, etc. I’m not saying that the other passengers in that cabin did anything wrong. But they might have been able to provide helpful information that could indicate if Royal Caribbean had overbooked that cabin. At this point Royal Caribbean could deny that any passengers even stayed in that room during that cruise. Even though this story is obviously missing some info, I think it’s the cruise line that sounds fishy. I don’t know why so many people seem to suspect that the couple and mom are lying or leaving out important info. Also, the host of this channel said that he thinks it’s strange that the couple had switched from using a different cruise line to Royal Caribbean, because he claims that people are very loyal to their favorite cruise line, and maybe they got in trouble with their previous cruise company. I think that’s ridiculous. Some people are very loyal to a particular cruise line and some don’t care at all. I’ve been on 4 cruises on 3 different lines. I like to try out different companies to see what the differences are. I choose based on the itinerary and the price. Plus, if this couple was only 21 now this was probably the first time that they had chosen the cruise themselves. If they had been cruising with parents in the past then the “kids” weren’t the ones booking the cruises then. So any loyalty would have been on the parent’s part.

It would be an absolutely unsustainable practice to just let people fly (potentially) thousands of miles to a foreign country and just leave them at the port with nowhere to sleep that night. You can see how that might be possible with a hotel or a flight, but not a cruise, right?

Weirdly I can see how something like this could happen- I booked directly with Carnival- paid completely- then all of a sudden, the third person in our cabin had a mysterious reservation in his name with an entirely different cabin number and it showed not paid- less than a 30 day booking mind you. He could not make any reservation changes (special needs)- Carnival almost cancelled my prepaid reservation, which was a better room, mind you in, favor of the unpaid one- if I hadn't called them right away when I saw the email come to my email- I wouldn't have known.

So I recently experienced something very similar. One of our Carnival booking was canceled without notice. No e-mail, no phone call, no refund, nothing. I only realized one of our cabins were canceled because it disappeared from my manager app and I couldn't add speciality dining. I notified my agent and we spent two days on the phone trying to figure out what happened and how to fix it. We later found out that there is a cruising age limit of 25 y/o and one of our cabins was reserved for my 21 y/o. We finally fixed the issue.

My son and his girlfriend booked a cruise. Carnival called them and explained that they were under 25 and weren’t married and couldn’t sail alone. I had to book a room and go on the cruise because they had to link their room to mine.

Working in hotels, i can say if you have an issue and you used a 3rd party company to book, its probably because you used a 3rd party to book. When possible, book directly. If its not that much of a difference in price, book directly. (And im talking about 3rd party websites, not travel agents you work personally with and that have a good reputation.)

All cruise bookings are “direct” with the cruise line. They are all booked on the cruise line site (it just may be the TA portal to the site) and paid directly to the cruise line. Always. And just to clarify, “3rd party agents” aren’t a thing when it comes to cruising. All companies selling cruises are acting as travel agencies (we call them online travel agencies or OTAs). Their contracts are negotiated the same way smaller agencies’ contracts are negotiated. Well, ok, not exactly the same since OTAs can negotiate bigger commission cuts, but the language in the contract is the same. Unlike hotels, cruise lines don’t sell “blocks” of rooms to the agency, which the agency then “owns.” All Royal rooms HAVE TO BE booked direct with Royal and paid for by the passenger’s credit card. Agencies aren’t supposed to use their agency card and get reimbursed by the cruise line. It’s true that hotels will walk OTA bookings first because they tend to be the cheapest rates and the least loyal guests. But cruise lines can’t and wouldn’t do that. First because you can’t book in any way that isn’t directly with the cruise line, but second because it would be an absolute MESS if cruise lines just abandoned paid guests at the port. Hotels can walk guests to another hotel. Where would a cruise line walk their guests?

I had something similar to this with a hotel in Miami. I went to check in I was told I canceled my reservation. I showed them my paid in full receipt. Then management came out and said they are now fully booked and no rooms available. And I had to contact the company that I booked with. We sat in the lobby for 3 hours. I had to FORCE them to find me another hotel. For this incident I became a professional in the travel industry. I wouldn't want anyone to go through that. So it happens more than you know

It definitely happens with hotels and flights. Absolutely. Can you guess why it could happen with them but not with a cruise? The answer is: if your hotel is overbooked, they walk your reservation to another hotel. Same with flights. How would that work with a cruise? They can’t just put you on the next cruise, you know? When cruises are overbooked (and they are) the overbooking is reconciled well in advance. Preferably months, but sometimes they only have a few weeks. Cruise lines absolutely, positively DO NOT want to be known for stranding passengers in foreign countries with no where to sleep that night. Yikes. No. This is something else. BUT - you are right that this does happen with hotels, so always have your travel agent book you directly with the hotel when possible. Expedia and Priceline bookings are the first to be walked and TAs know that. 👍🏻

The chargeback was glossed over and needed much more depth. Who initiated it and when? The girlfriend mentioned the drink package. IF the chargeback was initiated by the cardholder, which is usually how they happen, things get suspicious. The alcohol drink package is up to $105/person/day on RCL; it’s unlimited with some exceptions. Then there are less cost non-alcohol packages. According to RCL policy stated on their website, if one adult buys the deluxe alcohol package, then all other persons of drinking age in that stateroom must also buy that package. Obviously, the cruise line doesn’t want everyone in that stateroom drinking off one package. Note the girlfriend was willing to pay for the drink package at boarding that had been charged back before the cruise. This tells me that it was not a mistake to have been charged for it is the first place. She wanted that drink package, and APPARENTLY tried to get around having two packages for the room by trying to charge back her package after she booked it and before boarding. The girlfriend also throws a lot of red herrings into "interview" about several things that were off-topic. She sped over that drink package, and switched topics fast. IF the girlfriend purchased the drink package at booking, and then disputed her package to AMX, that’s a HUGE issue. It looks highly suspicious that she was trying to get around paying the daily cost of her drink package by disputing it and trying to have it canceled so the couple would drink off one package, IF that is what she did. It is essentially stealing for RCL, and I can see why they would not want to have such guests. Chargebacks give companies a bad rep. I could be wrong on this so please in the NEXT update, explain who initiated the chargeback and at what point after booking and before boarding. Also, which drink package did the son have? That’s SO important. Also, grow up couple, video neck up (the leg thing was just WEIRD!) and speak for yourselves instead of mommy doing a poor example a 60 Minutes interview. Mommy needs to stay totally out of it.

I’ve been on 3 cruises each with a different company. So I wouldn’t be so quick to use the logic of “why would they change their loyalty, unless if something fishy happened”. I think more and more people are realizing that the loyalty perks are t that great unless you’re cruising a hell of a lot. Like more than once a year (which isn’t the case for the average joe)

RCCL can offer the cabins that are not filled after departure to people that ask at guest services, so it does not have to be an overbooking situation

This story is great for the Believe It ir Not edition! I have cruised icer 34 times on Carnival, RC, Celebrity, Princesses, MCS and have never had such a problem. Booked through 3rd parties, TAs and direct. Would ❤ to hear more

multiple chargebacks at that. They did a chargeback against Carnival and the issue was dropped. So if I were to guess, RC was not messing around. People don't realize that often times, if you do chargebacks, ESPECIALLY MULTIPLE chargebacks, the retailer (no matter what business) will drop you completely.

She mentioned a charge back for the drink package. That might be what happened. When it didn't go through, it left them an unpaid balance. You have a Certain date before you travel to pay everything off or they will cancel your trip and sometimes will not refund your money. They then resold their room. The ship was probably sold out at that point and the only thing they could do was give them credit for another cruise 🛳. They will be lucky if they get their money back. 😢 For future cruises, make sure everything is paid in full before the deadline date. Don't even add on dining or excursions after the deadline! Just wait until you get on the ship to add on extras. You can add on the drink package as well once you board the ship 😊

I agree that there has to be more to the story, but I have to disagree that people don’t try other lines. I am a Diamond member with Royal, but I also sail with Carnival, NCL, and Princess. For me, it depends on the timing, price, and itinerary. Not to mention that all of the cruise lines seem to have gone a little nuts, so my loyalty is wavering lately.

She said a couple of times that they were offered another cruise but she said why should they take that when they were denied this one. She said she just wanted her money back because she wasn’t sailing with them again.

Refunds only occur when the cruise line makes an error or if your insurance company pays out for you (and even that isn’t a refund from the cruise line, it’s a reimbursement from the insurance company). If they offered a future cruise credit then it means the passengers did something. But the cruise line is trying to keep a customer, so they offer a future cruise. They often do that. But they don’t give back money for errors a passenger makes.

Oh that girl paid for the cruise and called in a dispute on amex for the charge and they caught her trying to get on the cruise anyway. This is not a cruse line situation. Her daughter can open her amex account online and show her she didnt do a chargeback if that is true Charge back is not a fraud freeze it is a disputed transaction that customer got money back for

Our story was even worse but it was with a different line not RC and we are yacht club members so i do beleive this mom because we were also denied in a very mysterious way until the ccaptain himself intervened and approved our sail (they kept us in a room 4 hours+)

I’m a travel agent and I’m taking this all the way to the wall for my clients. You’re giving me some answers. You’re definitely giving money back if you don’t allow them on the ship. If my clients have any issues, they let me know and sit back and relax. I’m resolving it all. You don’t need to talk to anyone but me. Any other calls or any other conversations needed to be had will be handled by me. I know how excited I am every time I’m at the port for a cruise. I can’t imagine this disappointment of someone this happens to.

Yes the story is confusing to me and Royal Caribbean is a cruise line that would take care of cruisers in a diplomatic way so hope this problem is solved soon and we all get the answers.

People do try other cruise lines. However, it could be a do not sail list. If it is the do not sail list, it would be either a case of mistaken identity, or it could be someone who cruised under one of their names before (perhaps an identity theft of someone else using her ticket), or it could be they cruised on another RCL one like Celebrity.

I agree that it *could* be a case of mistaken identity, in theory. But if it were, the cruise line would have gone above and beyond to compensate. I guarantee it. Just look at how cruise lines compensate other people wrongly denied boarding. They want those issues to disappear. The cruise line is being mum on this, which makes me suspect the kids know what’s going on and it isn’t royal’s fault.

Whatever the problem was, the cruise representative should have been able to tell them at check-in. It does not make sense that they have had to wait so long with no resolution. If all their information that they gave in the video are true then I would have also turned down a "future cruise credit". Whether the problem was the drink package payment, the travel agency or no-sail list due to mistaken identity, these people need an answer. So, is there missing information or a made up story? It just does not add up!

I am a platinum member at Carnival, but Royal Caribbean is having a sail, so I am planning to go on them next. So, that statement that something may have happened to make them go to another cruise line may be a little harsh. Maybe it was because of timing, or destination, or ports, who knows. At this point, I don't know what to believe. Thank goodness this didn't happen to me.

I have sailed with different cruise lines, that statement about loyalty is inaccurate. I have cruised with RCL, NCL, now looking at Princess, Virgin and Holland. As we get older, we want smaller, more quiet lines. No hustle and bustle, no kids.
