I disagree. I've been a reader for 17 years. I think his handling of the whole affair has been uniquely and tragically bad. I don't wish him any ill will, but whatever stress he is feeling is purely his own creation and due to lack of discipline on his part. At the end of the day, he sold out his life's work to become fantastically wealthy and build a mega media brand. It seems like that's what he truly wanted all along was a life of celebrity, fame, and wealth. He overcommits and works very hard on a million different projects, but none of them are Winds of Winter. If he'd rather work in big, dumb, gory and stupid hollywood project and run around the world to do interviews and stand on red carpets and attend conventions, well, he's free to make that choice. Needless to say I think that's incredibly sad and disappointing. It's the choice I would have made and not the one I wish he would have. He wrote hundreds of pages during 2020 when he was forced to stop flying around playing at being a celebrity. If he had just sat down to get to work and focus on the art at hand, it would have been finished years ago. He simply has other priorities and isn't interested in working on it anymore.

If GRRM would finally stop rewriting already existing chapters then sure 2 years might be doable. But realistically that's not gonna happen, it aint his style. There was a time when authors (for example Dickens) would publish their novels in parts in a newspaper as a serial. I know it's probably impossible because of already signed deals with publishers, but If GRRM released 1 chapter a month (which is not even that fast of a pace) for the last 11 years, and publish it online or in a magazine, he would be already done with whole saga.
@REChronic542 жыл бұрын
I’ve complained about the wait but honestly it’s hard writing the end to a beloved series which is equal to finishing up your life’s work. There’s so many things in the story to account for. After that, GRRM will have to cover aftermath of all the crazy shit that just went down, Cersei's Trial, fAegon's conquest, Sansa learning scheming from Littlefinger in the Vale, Arya concluding heir faceless men training in Braavos, Bran's training with 3 eyed raven, Davos' quest to find Rickon in Skagos, Jon's ressurection and the battle of the bastards, end to Stannis' campaign & whatever happens with those Iron Bank mercenaries, Euron's attack on Oldtown, Samwell's training in the Citadel & measter's politics, Dornish plot, whatever happens in Riverlands with Freys, Jamie, Brienne, Stoneheart & the brotherhood, King's Landing politics in aftermath of Kevan's murder & Cersei's trial, Dany going back to Vaes Dothrak & retaking her khalassar, Dany conluding her businness in Essos & sailing west and bunch of other plot points, there's so many I'm sure I've forgotten some of them. GRRM often says in a way he's writing like 9 separate novels since he has so many view point characters. When I'm trying not to get frustrated by the wait, I just try to remember that. 9 novels in 11 or 13 years is an achivement.
@Italiano_Strawhat11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the update George. Dont give up! We are rooting for you!
@doctordonnanoble Жыл бұрын
According to Brandon Sanderson, GRR Martin is an pantser style writer (does the world building then lets the characters tell the story themselves, rather than starting out with a detailed outline of the entire series before starting writing). It makes for really exciting stories, but also means that complex plot points and timelines become much more difficult to resolve the deeper you go into the story. The show couldn't manage to explain how the characters were teleporting all over the world in the last season, I imagine Martin is doing his best trying to make sense of his massive work - but may have written himself into a corner.

I really do believe GRRM's work is like nothing else. It's frustrating to wait, but worth it. Meanwhile I've been reading other books from all sorts of fantasy authors. Keep doing what you do best, George. When Winds of Winter is released, I'll be first in line.

@@chocolatezt "he doesn't owe his fans anything" "If he's got a writing block, he should just say so" These statements are not compatible: he doesn't owe anything, and yet owes an explanation for why writing is slow? No, it's very simple: he does not owe fans neither books nor explanations. Whether or not you owe him anything is irrelevant; I assure you, you have nothing of value to owe him in the first place. This is strictly a one-way relationship, where one side takes and the other gives, and it should be obvious that it's not the taker that gets to determine what should be given.
@Kuzune2 жыл бұрын
@@chocolatezt Well, at this point he definitely doesn't need your money. He also doesn't he need the "support" of fans who do nothing but whine and crave. So yeah, I'd argue that right now, you have nothing of value to give in return. When you buy a piece of media, you get that piece of media. You don't get previous entries in a series, you don't get further entries, you get that entry. Neither do you buy any promise of future parts of that story, nor any rights to the authors honesty, or progress reports. Yes, in an ideal world he'd be completely transparent and share exactly what his progress is. In the real world though, a piece of art is never really done, and people rarely know their actual progress. It'd obviously be best if he didn't promise release dates at all... which is exactly what he admits in the video, and says he won't do anymore, so that's a non-issue. As is also said in the video (you could at least watch it), failing to fulfill a prediction is not the same as lying.
@GaryCrant2 жыл бұрын
@@Kuzune With your logic the whole concept of a series wouldn’t work at all. This only works with the implied promise of the author to his fans that the series will be finished. If all authors would start dropping series, than nobody would buy their first entries and without that support authors won’t get publishers to invest into their vision.

Yes it sucks waiting so long, but I also appreciate how perfectionist he is and how his vision of the story is so fluid. Our vision of the story also evolve as we discover it so in a way it makes him more in sink with his fans than if he just though about something 20 years ago then just wrote it without ever changing his mind. The worst aspect of the show is that the end didn't seems to fit the rest of the show and it's probably because they wanted to just stick with it no matter what because that's what they understood when they discussed with GRRM so many years ago and did it anyway even if it didn't really fit with the regular flow of the show.

Glad to hear it's making progress! But people who are not writers don't understand the concept of tweaking the work until the author is satisfied with it. He wants to write the best book possible, and sometimes things in the draft just are dissatisfactory, and the urge to fix it is like a constant itch. And finding inspiration for that fix doesn't always come as easily as people think, no matter how hard the author brainstorms! So, although I'm also anxious for the book to be finished...people, if you're not walking in George's shoes, please cut him some slack! Being a writer is a glorious path to live, but the ruts and blocks that come along the way are a real challenge to tackle. And remember, challenges take time and they include sometimes gritty effort.

Quality over quantity. Consider the multitudes of lore and history contained in the world of ASOIAF. He's given us a gift with his world of fantasy. I can't imagine anyone has wanted these books to be done as much as he has. Of course, I want TWOW and ADOS, but also, Fire and Blood 2, the rest of the Dunk and Egg novellas, and anything else he's able to give us. The existing books have spanned a 30 year stretch of time. As people have gotten more used to immediate answers and faster and faster gratification, they have put more and more pressure on classic writers to finish books that used to take years to complete. If you put too much stress on this man, he may not love long enough to finish these books. Just understand that you may wait another 10 years for the entire series to be done, or that you may only get this next book and not the last one. It can happen. Best start planning for the worst and hope for the best. You’re doing great George. Stay healthy. Write when it comes to you.

I genuinely sympathize with the pressure he's under from both himself and everyone else, and the fact that books don't just magically write themselves, especially stories as sprawling and detailed as A Song of Ice and Fire. And I truly hope he gets to enjoy many more decades regardless of whether he ever finishes this series (and Dunk & Egg). And I totally respect his not wanting anyone else to finish it if the worst case scenario comes to pass (although with the TV show already having done a... version, there's really no further damage that could be done by such). What I can't respect and really hope he's done a 180° on is that all notes and drafts be destroyed in case of his death. Imagine if we hadn't had Christopher Tolkien compiling and releasing J.R.R.'s unfinished work!
