My son was showing me his new guns yesterday and we were talking about how the perception of plastic has changed so dramatically in my lifetime. For most of us in GenX+, the basic aesthetics of plastic used to send a strong signal, which was: "This is probably cheap, flimsy, crappy." Advances in material science have forced us to re-assess, re-organize. Carbon fiber helped us olds begin to change our priors not just because it was a truly tough material that shared that basic plastic aesthetic, but because (in the beginning, anyway), it also had a consistent SEPARATE aesthetic, with its texturing and trademark surface qualities. It used to be you'd hear the word "polymer" and just roll your eyes and think, "Yeah, plastic." Not so anymore. *EDIT: [Insert something about Glock] :-)

I am actually just researching the historical event of the IMR fiasco. I am wondering if your WWSD project will include designing a load for the 556nato, such that emulates Stoner's original ballistics features (as opposed to what the army did to the cartridge and barrel, widely accepted as the reason many GI's died due to inability to shoot their M16 in Vietnam)? For me, I haven't still found out if the updates to the original, unsuitable, cartridge resulted in the modern 556 being closer-to-wwsd and better or closer-to-wwARMYdo and better (I think it's safe to assume that 60 years of progress resulted in something better)

Without doing it in halves, they could not make the magazine well, or FCG area, be cuboid in shape. That is, any injection molded plastic requires some "draft", or angle, to the planes contacting the molds, or it won't come out! Sinestral Rifleman mentions this. You cannot have a zero draft plane. Sooo the FCG area would have to be wider at the top than at the bottom, which would not allow any FCG to fit properly, and the magazine well would also need a taper, which would probably be fine in practice.
@roflchopter114 жыл бұрын
It's probably too late, but you should look at mold inserts. Could solve the 80% question, the various accessory positions, grips, mag wells, and maybe even variable length of pull. Can also address key tolerance issues like the various pin locations. Can even allow replacement of high wear areas of the mold without starting over. I worked for a medical devices company that did things like that.

Russel: I’m doing all this work and making sure this will work. Karl and Ian: so when will we be selling this? Russel: All this work is very long and tedious. Karl and Ian: soooo very soon?

Its a good thing that they didn't take deposits, they can take as long as they want.

7:22 Why does the simulation take so long? I used injection molding simulation software in 2004 on 2004 computers that only took a few seconds to tell you all about potential failure points and temperature gradients of your mold, with any material you chose. It would have to be literally a million times more complicated now to take 2 days on 2020 computers. Are you sure it wasn’t just that it took your contractor 48 hours to find the right parameters for a successful injection? I guess it’s possible it’s really that slow, but wow

Id guess that it includes iterating for the best parameters too.

My question is why did they start from scratch with this lower when Cav-Arms did this back in the 90's, couldn't they have just bought these molds and build it from their ??

Molds are worn out. They said this quite a while ago

@@CKshouta Then I wonder how they and not they at cav-arms but another outfit made the 2nd generations of a all polymer lower, just thinking out loud...

The Cav Arms tooling was sold to GWACS, and they disappeared off the market years ago. When WWSD 2017 got popular, Karl and I made a bunch of attempts to contact GWACS to arrange more manufacture and further development. We were never able to reach them, and their whole market presence had gone dark (social media, customer support, business license, etc). We eventually gave up, and talked to KE to develop an alternative.

I may or may not have gotten this video and the InRange video confused with each other... LOL 😜
