(Unfortunately, Tombstone Territorial Firearms has closed up shop since this video was published).
I had a chance to do a video on a Portuguese contract AR-10 made by Artillerie Inrichtingen in the Netherlands a little while back. Unfortunately, it had just sold, and so we didn't have an opportunity to doing any shooting with it. I put off the editing of that video for a while, and then happened to have a chance a week ago to do some shooting with a registered full-auto Sudanese contract AI AR-10. They aren't the same gun exactly, but very close. So when I put this video together, I added in that shooting footage, so we could have the complete package. Enjoy!

7.62 really is not a full auto cartridge, back when our army still used the Ak4 (winterized and lengthened G3) the educations officers used to say "the full auto setting is only for when you are locked in with 14 bolsheviks in a cupboard"

The slow motion captures the apparent rigid structure of this gun. Many guns in heavy calibers wobble tremendously when fired.

I'm a bit late to the party but as an owner of a Portuguese AR10 I would like to correct a few things. The buffer does not really have a reciprocating mass but it is filled with a row of cup springs, which are supposed to absorb the impact a bit. Under recoil the assembly is thight, nothing can reciprocate in there. Next to that, the rifle has no closed gas setting. All three settings have a corresponding slot which differs in size, with the smallest one for 'normal' ammo and a clean rifle. One novel feature of this rifle was the ability to fire rifle grenades while actually ejecting the blank and loading a new one from the magazine, greatly increasing firing rate. So there is no need for a closed position. As to the difference with the Sudanian model, one of the biggest changes with the Portuguese model is the increase of locking lug width in the Portuguese model. The earlier models were prone to actually shearing of one of the locking lugs, rendering the rifle unusuable (and potentially dangerous. This was fixed with the larger lugs of the last models. If I owned a Sudanese model I would be hesitant to fire it a lot, it will be a whole lot of work to get a new bolt head. But it is possible to use an modern AR10 bolt head and barrel extension with some adjustments.

One problem that can arise with these, especially the Sudanese version, is if the "friction brake" buffers are a bit tired.. This can cause the carrier to head rearwards at higher than desirable speed. The Sudanese "gas regulator" is also a bit random, especially if they have been in the hands of less than well-trained troops. I once owned both types, but with the "fun-switch: disabled. Nice toys!

"Artillerie Inrichtingen" translates loosely to "firearms organisation", they were responsible for firearms production for the royal dutch army for around 300 years preceding ww2, only named as such since somewhere around 1888. Your pronunciation was pretty much spot on (including the hard G), except you put the emphasis on "richt" while it should be on "ting". Great video as always Ian, sick slow-mo shots too!

My first rifle was a Sudanese AR-10 and I used to subscribe to contribute to the AR-10er magazine back in the 1980's. The blown barrel mentioned happened during the trials in 1956 against the T44 (M14) and the T48 (FAL). The early Squareback AR-10 featured a titanium barrel with a steel liner and a "tomato can" muzzle brake. The barrel blew up after 5974 rounds firing a full auto endurance test. The US Army was already in favour of the M14 because it copied the M1 Garand. This weird new space age rifle couldn't even fix a bayonet. The Sudanese AR-10 was actually longer than the G3 but shorter than M14/FAL. I agree that it was less durable mainly because of the short development time. The Sudanese also had an adjustable gas system at the front of the front sight post. It consisted of two little holes that required a special tool to turn this screw. This tool was located in the handle of the bayonet which came apart a little bit like a Swiss army knife. The Sudanese model was overall a simpler design and very much resembled an early M16. My biggest gripe with this design was the lack of a forward assist and the free floating firing pin which caused the occasional slam fire when using reloads.

When I was a student, I worked one month as an apprentice at the AI Hembrug weapons and machines factory at Zaandam (Netherlands). At that time there were still a lot of prototypes of the Armalite AR--10 around in their private museum. In the previous years they had got some (small) orders from Sudan, Portugal and South-American countries, but that was already over at the time I worked there (1969)... Their enigineers and workers still were sorry that they lost the Dutch government contract against the Belgian FAL. I guess some politics were involved in that decision...

In the video Ian mentions that the AR 10 was used a lot by the Portuguese in Angola and Mozambique although I'm not 100% sure but I recall my uncles who were in the Portuguese Armed forces (army and navy) and fought in the "Ultramar" (i.e Angola and Mozambique) and my dad that was in the Portuguese Paratroopers say that the AR 10 was never used in this war since this was not a "open/declared" war so they could not be used. G3 was used exclusively. My father trained with the AR 10 a bit but the Paratroopers tained mostly with the Mauzer and the G3.

In the 80s there was a Dutch arms dealer, who was also Dutch National champion in both pistol as well as large caliber rifle. He told me that the best semi auto rifle he ever shot and btw was his winning champion gun was the AR-10. If memory serves me correct he owned ser.nr. 0001 He also pointed out an inherent flaw in the design: after firing the last round, the boltstop would rise but lean against the rear of the mag.well, wich would show cracks very soon. Remedy: always load a dummy round as last cartridge to fire, so first one in the mag. His name was Adam Wagemaker who had to leave us early, unfortunately. Bought a mint Llungmann from him, as well as several other guns. Llungmann is gone, would go soon as the EU is planning to ban semi autos for no real reason other than to leave the people without arms. Comforting thought for Putin, but that the way it is nowadays. P.s for repeaters, K31 was his favourite. He would regularly shoot a FN highpower at 100 mtrs.

ostiariusalpha Externally, it sure does, but internally they are different. If you're interested, there are some "disassembled" photos in a post I wrote a few years ago after getting my first AR10: www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_123/522007_Before_there_were_AR15_s____range_report____Now_with_added_pics_.html. The two buffers shown there are from a Portuguese variant and (I believe) a Sudanese variant. I've seen but don't have photos of the Hollywood buffer, as well. They were very light and contributed to the (too) high rate of fire in the early rifles. The evolution of functional engineering in the AR design is what fascinates me about these "retro" rifles.

Excellent video, Ian! Thanks! I have an Armalite AR01B, a sort of second generation AR-10 in the Sudanese style. Many small features are different. The Sudanese had a gas regulator, it was just smaller, not positive, and requiring a special tool (found in the pommel of their bayonets). The Portuguese gas adjustment dial does not go "off, regular, high," it goes "low, regular, high." The "low" setting was used for overpowered ammo so that less gas would get into the action and stress the working parts. The "regular" setting was for standard operation, and the "high" setting was for use in extreme cold, when more gas was needed to work the action. Grenades were actually launched with whatever gas setting was working best for standard ammunition. In fact, the AR-10 was the only rifle which would cycle blanks while firing grenades, greatly increasing the rate at which they could be launched.

+ Forgotten Weapons The whole uncontrollable recoil in auto-fire thing was the reason why when British and Commonwealth troops adopted the FN FAL (known as the SLR in those countries) they only adopted the semi-auto version and not the full-auto version. Some other changes were made as well such as furniture and sling points. Australian and New Zealand troops used them until they were replaced with the F88 rifle (a slightly modified Steyr AUG built under licence) in the late 80's. British troops replaced them with the SA80 rifle around the same time. Interesting side note, both sides were effectively armed with the same rifle during the Falklands conflict in 1982, however, while the British were using the semi-auto version of the FAL, the Argentine troops were equipped with the select fire versions.

Yes! One of the few rifles my country build and (re-) designed after ww2! After the Dutch army issued the FN FAL instead of the AR10, AI stopped building them. Most AR10's and parts were sold to an AI employee who also had a gun store. AI only wanted FL100,- (Dutch guilders in those days, approx $45,-) per sold rifle. Because this rifle was so accurate (1MOA) it became popular with match shooters. In the 70's and '80's, every serious match shooter used an AR10 (or accurized USGI m14's which were imported from Vietnam in that same era). The AR10 was a very common rifle and I shot it a lot. When the AR15 came around and most AR10 parts dried up, it loses popularity. Till 10 years ago, you could buy an AR10 for $1750,-. AR10's were known for bold catch breakings. That's why we used a dummy round as last so bold wasn't grabbed by the catch. AR10's and parts are now rare to. Great video. Reminded me at the days that I went to the range with my dad and watched many AR10's in action!

FYI, these early AR-10s were made in the Netherlands by AI, but they are generally referred to by their specific contract buyers, as the design of the gun changed slightly to meet each buyer's requirements. Great stuff Ian, really enjoy your videos. As a matter of fact the most enjoyable and educational of all on KZbin. Funny to see that on almost all you videos you have seemed to have caught one of your fingers in something...ouch!

Your knowledge is what keeps me enamored with videos like this. I love the charging handle design under the carry handle on the AR-10. Man, how does Alex from The Firearm Blog be able to afford all the machine guns he has NFA registered ?

Its interesting that in slow motion you can see the initial recoil impulse from firing the round, and then another push as the bolt hits its stop.

Bolt and carrier weren't made from stainless. They were 8620 IIRC, definitely hard chrome plated. The Dutch did an excellent job on the metallurgy of the AR10, as well as attention to detail. The ejector pin is chamfered, for example, to help prevent case head impingement in the bolt face from the right side feed presentation from the magazine. They are fine rifles when you look at the workmanship on them.

The BCG was not actually stainless steel; it was carbon steel that was then chrome-plated for corrosion resistance. Some early experimentation was done prior to the Dutch contract with stainless steel, but it was found to not react well to the heat (stainless steel technology wasn't as good back in '55) of firing, so they went with chrome-plated carbon steel. You can also tell this is correct by looking at several of the Dutch-production rifles that never had the chrome added to their bolt carrier groups; which were just parkerized instead.

Suspend reality for an instant and imagine that NATO decided to adopt this chambered in the 280 Brit round? You'd essentially have a hard hitting AR platform that 60+ years down the track, you'd still have developers trying to get right!

1) the wholw 7.62 v 5.56 debate would be dead 2) No M14, no M16, just the sensible middle ground 3) AR platform: They're still ironing out some flaws all these years later

The AR10 - in the form of these versions - was the only fifth-generation service rifle in the world at that time. It was years ahead of anything anyone else was doing. In tandem with a true intermediate cartridge, it would have been something special. As it was, it was something pretty special. These AR10s - despite being the lightest rifles of their kind in existence - were surprisingly controllable in full cyclic use, due to the innovative straight-line stock and other features of the rifle. Even with the powerful 7.62 NATO cartridge. Eugene Stoner and James Sullivan were firearms design geniuses.

Admiral Percy Yeah, this particular rifle has a weak detent spring in the charging handle. Normally that doesn't happen, and it actually wasn't noticeable while shooting.

Admiral Percy That was only a problem with the earlier variants. The 2-piece charging handle on the Portuguese variant collapses on itself and remains inside the upper. The lower receiver on a Portuguese, in fact, has a raised piece that closes off the opening at the back of the upper.

JacksonOfAllTrades Concealed in my particular case, but I only meant that light for caliber guns are harder to shoot quickly, and carrying too light a gun, while nice to carry, may not always be the best trade.
