Thank you for another upgrade to my Johnson 18. I’m starting to gather the parts now. That old engine is so nice ever since I took the pressure tank away and used your fuel pump kit. Best thing I could’ve ever done. This old thing has so much compression. I just cannot wait for an electric start at 63 it’s only getting harder to pull that. At least the good part is I know it’s gonna start within a couple of pulls because it is ridiculously dependable.

I just picked up a 1957 18 hp and 5 1/5 hp. with 3 dual line metal cans and a stand.

I have one of these 18hp oem electric start from 57 there is also a choke silniod alls still working.

Hey T-Mike! I have a vintage 1948 Hiawatha 3HP outboard motor that still runs well along with the prop. It’s ready to be put on a boat and in the water. I’m wanting to sell it.

Hello. I follow you and have done your fuel pump conversion for my FD11 with your help (you may recall) anyway. I am very excited to try the electric start conversion but am late to the game and you are the only likely person that has the experience to know if a 1959 18HP Evinrude GJ OEM Flywheel with teeth will work on the 1957 Johnson FD11 conversion. Thank you for your time.

@@michaeljsimon thank you. That was an incredibly fast reply. Thank you for assisting my quest. This engine has great compression idles like a slow sewing machine. I love it but at 63 it sure is hard to pull, but always starts on a second or first pull.

@@michaeljsimon As persistence paid off I am happy to say through video observation from you and then other engines and parts I was able to find a matching starter and bracket in a very creative way. the starter I found that matches is from a 1974Johnson 25HP engine. The flywheel was an OEM 1959 Flywheel The Solenoid as you described exactly and the push button I may or may not use. I might put a key to it so when I dock in a public chain it might have a little more protection (as long as I remove the pull chord system for the day). I might ad more accolades to you for the next step to follow from a video of your regarding a safety chord. I can not help but imagine if my son where to electric start and forget to take it out of gear it will start and go whatever speed it is on. Your videos are very informative. This old engine thumps EXTREMELY slow and I believe it is to following your tuning videos as well as the Fuel pump conversion on the crank case. Removing any issue regarding the fuel line pressure system is huge. There are other factors for an engine to run. Last week alone I could not get it to run very well at all out of the blue. It turned out the new J4C plugs that were in it (one or the other) was bad. I put the old J8C back in that I always keep in the boat and it became a Swiss watch. Last, the compression of this motor is unreal. Remarkably tough and tiring after just 3 pull attempts. I do not have the starter hooked up yet but when I do it will be as good or better than any new motor...because I can fix any of it easily. Thank you Mike.
