He is probably used to working on older pc/office pcs that has the BTX dimensions. I've done the same in the beginning of my career.

You replaced an R9 270(rebranded HD 7870) with a mucchh older and more power hungry card, the HD 5850. If you want a quick(and substantial) upgrade for that PC I'd recommend a used GTX 1650 or RX 6400 or Arc A380
