Right about the same time this was recorded for the drought relief effort in Ethiopia they also did Hands across America. Many of the artists who participated in USA for Africa were also involved with that. It was to show how Americans can come together for a common cause ( to fight against hunger and homelessness ) and involved 6.5 million people holding hands in a continuous chain from Battery Park in NY to the RMS Queen Mary pier in Long beach, Ca. They held hands for a solid 15 minutes and it made it into the Guinness book of world records. I remember wanting to do it, but the location was too far to drive from where we lived. I was only 10 or eleven at the time, so...

Near the end, in the Springsteen/Wonder duet, if you look closely you'll see Bruce has a tear in his eye. Anyone notice legendary singer and humanitarian Harry Belafonte in the chorus? He got the ball rolling for this project when he was so moved by the crisis in Africa with so many starving and dying in the famine that he sought out a music manager he knew to see about starting an all-star benefit concert. The manager instead suggested a record with top artists singing together. They went to Quincy Jones who, with Michael Omartian, ended up producing the event and its subsequent USA for Africa album, and the single "We Are The World," which featured the gathering of this supergroup. Quincy asked Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie to put together the key song, and then pulled everything together, arranging for all the artists and musicans participating. It was well-promoted and astoundingly successful in raising both awareness of the famine and money for the so-needed relief.

Lionel Ritchie did call Prince to do this song. In an interview Lionel said when he called prince wanted his own room to record. Lionel said that it was impossible (since every singer that joined is putting there pride aside to do this group song). So prince just said THEN I'LL JUST DO A GUITAR SOLO. Then lionel just had enough and said I'll just call you later and that was that lol.

The world needs the togetherness that this song created again. The mid-1980s "African Famine Relief Concerts" are legendary and as they were the first ever, they paved the way for the concept of "Disaster Relief/Benefit Concerts" becoming even more popular straight into the 21st century. I love your reaction to this epic song and all the legendary singers/actors that are still here and those that have left this world too...RIP to them. I was born in the early 1960s and it makes me happy to see young folks checking out and enjoying all of the awesome music that I grew up with. A group that I would highly recommend trying out is Playing For Change (PFC).They are a non profit band that promotes world peace through music education/appreciation. There are a lot of "old-school" songs and even well known musicians donated their time and permission to use their songs. They have been doing these concerts for 20yrs now and all of their "covers" are awesome because musicians/singers/dancers from all over the world play one song together at the same time. They also help other non profit organizations help to end poverty, homelessness, hunger, etc. All of the songs are 'fire' but I would start with "The Weight", "Peace Train","Stand By Me","Listen to the Music","War/No More Trouble","When the Levee Breaks","Imagine"and"All Along the Watchtower" and "Ripple". Even my late mom loved them and the hope/love and message of world peace.Music is Universal and timeless. It transcends all races, genders, cultures, language barriers, etc. A friend from Maine, USA 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕🖖🖖🖖🖖☮️☮️☮️☮️👍👍👍👍👍👍

I always love when he brings his hands up when he's really going for it, one of the best things I've ever seen in all my years of watching and listening to singers. Cyndi Lauper's moment of erupting like a little firework always gets me emotional as well. Dione & Willie were such a perfect pairing. And I loved seeing Bob Dylan and Ray Charles.
