The quote that sin is treating people like things is my favorite Pratchett quote. I love the next line: “including yourself.” I see many people, especially young people, encouraged to treat themselves as things and falsify themselves rather than doing any self-exploration or working for self-awareness. Carpe Jugulum is the first Discworld book I read, and it's still my favourite. The Vampires getting Weatherwaxed is such a great moment, Nanny Ogg can do no wrong, and I love Igor going around adding creaks to the doors and cobwebs to the corners to give it the right aesthetic. I'm genuinely curious why you didn't mention Reverend Oates at all. His personal growth from "shades of gray/ both sides have a point" to "evil must be opposed" under Granny's teaching is a big part of the theme, and he even gets in the final blow with the holy power of Forgiveness. "An axe isn't even a holy symbol!" "Oh. Let's make it so."

@@MavenoftheEventide I really like your review of Carpe Jugulum - if you ever run out of Vampire stories... I'd watch more about Discworld from you as well. :) And there are some other Vampires as important side characters in some of the other stories as well... "The Truth" (and later books) have Otto Chriek - the Iconographer for the Ankh-Morpork Times ("The Truth shall make you fret") who turns into dust when he uses flashlights (well, magical fire salamanders). "Reaperman" has Count Notfarouto, actually some bloke named Winkings who got Vampirism via inheritance - he and his wive join the story as members of a society for the undead and help Susan fight the weird threat in that story. "Thud" introduces Sally von Humpeding, a new Vampire officer Vimes is forced to employ in his Watch against his will due to an order by the Patrician who wants to diversify the Ankh-Morpork city watch even further. And "Monstrous Regiment", finally, has Maladict, a young Vampire who joins the Borogravian army together with the heroine of the book. And I'm honestly really interested in what you think of the "Ribboners" as an idea - Vampires like Otto, Sally or Maladict who have completely sworn off human bloh... blll... ze B-Vord altogether and who work at the kosher butchery or similar places. Like AA the Ribboners have regular meetings where they have uplifting singsongs and hot cocoa and no bluuuuuuh... None of that other stuff! Me personally I actually like the idea that some of the Vampires simply are tired of all the stress and mobs with torches their traditional lifestyle can cause and who decide to sacrifice satisfying their urge for human blood in return to be able to "live" a more mundane "life". Also I like the added twist that they NEED some Ersatz to be able to obsess over, to prevent them to go back to the old ways again, because their urges will take over if they don't keep their minds occupied. So Otto is fascinated over the beauty of light and takes iconographs. Maladict becomes a coffee addict and so forth...

@@commanderkruge Don’t forget Lady Margalotta. She’s a Black Ribboner, too! In Uberwald, which must be difficult. There’s some suggestion in The Truth that it’s easier for vampires to be accepted and employed in Ankh-Morpork if they’re Black Ribboners, but presumably she does not need that. Otto, however, remains my favorite for so many reasons, especially his “kit.”

A wonderfully insightful examination of the book's themes! For other takes on vampires from Sir Terry, I suggest "The Truth" and "Monstrous Regiment". uberwald (an actual german translation of transylvania from history) is sometimes an analogue of the austro-hungarian empire and later on in the novel "the fifth elephant" the shift toward fascism (the werewolves have an angular wolf symbol, like that of the s.s. instead of the "double-headed bat"of the old regime) that took place in germany. i assume that the magpie was chosen as a symbol for a family of vampires with a tendency for beaurocratic fascism because it's a shoutout to franz kafka (a magpie and a jackdaw are not that much apart) so the name of the vampire family is a shoutout to someone who objected in our world to anything that they stand for.

Ok, first off, I was smiling like mad when I saw this would be a review of Terry Pratchett book by Maven. It was like two of my favorite things together. But, I do have to disagree with a couple of points. One, while Granny felt she was under appreciated (because she thought she wasn't invited to the baby's naming), it turned out she wasn't at all. In fact, they wanted her to be the God mother of the baby. Second, people don't fear her for her powers, they feared her because she could, and would, tear them down verbally in a heartbeat. But they all knew that Granny was the one to see if you had a problem. Although, admittedly, Granny was not afraid to use her powers to teach someone a lesson if they gave her some lip. Third, in Discworld, even vampires could be good (because Terry did not believe anyone was born bad because of their race). But that really is in later books and does not invalidate your points. In this book vampires did represent evil. Man, I have such a heterosexual man crush on Terry Pratchett.

I'm from the UK, recently returned to my small hometown after living quite a while in a nearby city, not a big city but still fairly diverse. People I've known all my life are suddenly talking about the 'wise' words of Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro, people who had no problem with transexual people are now taking issue with it, and saying that women now wield too much power in the world whereas before they just didn't care. Radicalisation is real, I've seen it, thing is these people I've been talking about are for the most part kind, friendly people who would do the nicest things for you, and when it comes down to it when faced with immigrants or members of the LGBTQI+ community they would probably accept them and say things like 'of course I don't mean you when I say that foreigners abuse the system', in fact I know they would. There is always a threat with this ideology that is just around the corner, there is always an impending 'invasion' or a fictional arrest warrant for people who 'speak their minds'. Its truly amazing how quickly human beings are tainted by a dangerous ideology, and yes I'm not just talking about the far right, it happens in all places where extremism starts to take root. In the Soviet nations, the same kind of people would start to tell the authorities about their neighbours for being 'western spies', or in places like Iran you get innocent people being arrested for the slightest deviation of Islam, its that kind of groupthink that sends society spiralling into something truly unpleasant, and the fans of people like Peterson, Shapiro and Molyneux can't see the wood for the trees, they don't know that all their efforts to fight extremism have blinded them to the fact that they are benefiting another form of extremism.
@davelister2961
@davelister2961 2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for followers of either, nor do I know much about Shapiro, but I know from reading a few of Peterson's works that he is almost more adamantly opposed to extremism as was Christopher Hitchens. Hitchens tried to fight against totalitarianism both political and ideological, where he could, and Peterson has espoused similar beliefs and ideals. I've seen people 'characterise', and misrepresent, Peterson's thoughts and words before, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
@lloroshastar6347
@lloroshastar6347 2 жыл бұрын
@@davelister2961 I understand he labels himself in opposition to authoritarianism, just as Sargon of Akaad and Tim Pool like to insist they're 'classical liberals' and Joe 'I love Ron DeSantis' Rogan is 'on the left'. Thing is people can label themselves anything they want, it's their actions and their words that define them. If Peterson cared so much about freedom he wouldn't spend so much time encouraging the suppression of freedom of expression. As I said, by fighting against a mythological authoritarianism he is encouraging politicians to implement real oppression. There is no law that would give you jail time or a fine for misgendering someone, he made that up, but there are laws being pushed by right-wing politicians to limit the rights of trans people all over the world. Those people often cite Peterson's work as justification. Another example of this oppression disguised as a love for freedom is the banning of the Mulsim head dress in some societies. It's painted as freeing women from misogyny, what it actually is is the same kind of oppression that forces women in some Muslim nations to wear such clothing. Why not make it illegal to force the wearing of the head dress? I'll tell you why, because that was never the intention in the first place. The real reason was to force Muslims to dress more akin to what Western nations are used to, to make people feel more comfortable around Muslims. It's the same logic with the likes of Peterson, support of an authoritarian mindset disguised as a love of freedom. Absolute 'market freedom' is almost always a term for unregulated monopolies which have appalling business practices and limit the rights of workers. Dismantling those 'damned' workers Unions is painted as some kind of freedom, but all it achieves is it gives business owners the freedom to exploit their workers. It's only 'freedom' when it benefits the rich and powerful, thereby the very antithesis of what freedom is supposed to be about. The truth is, Peterson worships authority, he just wants the right kinds of authority and damns equality as 'authoritarianism' because it removes privilege from those already in power.

Do you know how many Gestapo officers it took to hold a town of about 40,000 people in absolute fear and obedience? Two. They knew that the townspeople Themselves would use the opportunity of the regime to 'settle scores' with neighbours they'd had arguments with or simply didn't like the look of.They could be absolutely relied on to do the Nazis work for them , all you have to do is give people an excuse and permission and they'll do just about anything you want and, quite coincidentally, it nicely fits what They want to do. People of wicked intent know this, this is what makes them dangerous. Dragons CERTAINLY know this... But at least one of them was repelled by the reality of the idea. This is an excellent and insightful review of one of my favourite novels - getting to the heart of the social criticism which underpins much of Terry Pratchett's humour😏 The way Granny turns the tables on the "Vampyres", by turning them into tea addicts the vastly important role tea plays in British society, especially amongst people of a certain age (like me). Some social groups, like older ladies and working men on building sites, are particularly dependent.

As one who wears the finery (and pointy hat) of an Unseen University wizard, the Witches Of Lancre are among my favorite denizens of the Disc- "A world, and a mirror of worlds." Pratchett had a unique and delightful insight into the foibles of the human condition. And now I have a new appreciation for what is my second-favorite Discworld Witches book. The first, of course, being "Lords And Ladies."

I never thought about how horrible it is for the father to have that burden to choose between the child or the mother. The mother should tell the hospital well beforehand, once she knows she’s pregnant. Not only is it misogynistic but it also makes the man have this guilt for the rest of his life. Personally I think the mother should be favoured in every case. A single dad needs support which doesn’t usually happen, that causes far more suffering than a couple not having that child in particular.
@ToHoldNothing
@ToHoldNothing 5 жыл бұрын
The mother is also arguably the one that can gestate further children, whereas saving the child merely means another mouth to feed for a village that may not be able to, versus a woman that can have another child (and presumably stay away from horses in the future when pregnant)

As for being relevant... I know that the whole riot part of the story in "Nightwatch" is actually based on historical riots that happened in London, but knowing the book and then seeing what happened in Portland unfold was damned eerie. (you know, the whole building barricades and shutting off part of the city against the police force - only they sadly didn't have a Samuel Vimes on their side...).

First off Maven, i lked how you (and by extension your crew) at leasrt tried to save Emma in "Voice From The Dark", even if she turned out to be one of the Villians. Now onto my main thing: While i never managed to read all the Discworld books(i was more into Stephen King at the time),Carpe Jugulum was one of the few i did.I personally agree with you&Granny,if you let that type of retorique into anywhere, it has a way of Worming into the Public Mindset (that's actually how the Nazi Theology became SO prevalent after WW1).So thank you for trying to show folks what may be happening today....

Your probably sick of hearing this but your makeup is so on point. I found you thru the dom reviews for phantom stuff and good grief I'm in awe of your phantom collection. I do indeed thought I loved the phantom as much as you at first but then felt humbled as hell to see your collection and embarrassed by how little I knew how many times it's been adapted from just the original the translated one and then of course the musical which was my introduction to the phantom all together. I love how much you dislike raoul too because I HATED him as a kid lol ,hate him even more after reading the novel where hes basically the lesser of two evils basically. Erics behavior can kinda be excused away from the childhood and all that but anyways since that video I've been binging your videos , and love them :) keep up the great work ♡

I've been told for years to read the Discworld series but never got around to it. Book series that goes beyond 3 books tend to scare me away is probably the reason. But from what I understand from this review is that you kinda can pick whatever book you like in the Discworld series without being completely lost. Or am I all wrong here?
